I love archons. They are so good in sc2. They tank everything and do pretty decent dps. if you can get like 4 of them behind your chargelots they will help you win a LOT of engagements. They also tank PF's very nicely x.x lol

I think they're pretty strong right now... one thing I can complain about though is the sound effect the archon uses right now.

BW archon was a very intimidating roar/electric buzz like "AAAAUUUUGGGHHHHZZZZZZZZZBBBZZZZZZ." When you hear that sound you can feel in your gut all your mutas taking ~600 damage.

Sc2 archons don't make very intimidating sounds.

the case can be made for almost every unit in SC2 .. Ultralisk in particular.

LOL. I had to log in and quote this. Excellent description. Really, take terrible sounds out and make them sound more terrifying.

Back in brood war, Archons were, well at least for me, extremely powerful, and an invaluable asset to my army. I loved them so much, I actually made shield generators, you know, those things that the probe could build, but you never really saw a use for, ya, there basically built for archons. When I first started playing, all I would do was mass archons and wreck every thing. Then of course my friends found out about the science vessel, and I learned that when you pair archons and corsairs, you’re basically untouchable...basically.

I'm curious to know how good a player you were at BW. I played a D+ zerg summer 2010 (between SC2 beta and release when the iccup ladder was arguably at its best), and mass archons were a gimmick strategy. 5 hatch hydra wrecked strategies like this. Ranged zerg attacks have been and are currently the working counter to massing archons. What if you took it to the late game, massed corsair, and huge upgrades? I take a million expansions, max on fully upgraded hydras/guardians/defilers and wrecked you with a combination of dark swarm and superior army regeneration.

That's not to say they are completely uncalled for. In a balanced protoss army they do very well. They destroy clumped muta going for high templar snipes and were a perfect use for templars after you wrecked the zerg army with storm.

In my opinion, the biggest reason you're seeing problems with this strategy in SC2 is because most zergs will use range-based units (roaches and hydras). If I scout something like zealot/archon I beeline for a roach warren since I play a zergling/baneling-style midgame. That's not to say there is zero use for archons in SC2, but even lower level players will unwittingly counter the strategy just by following popular metagame trends.

I'm glad you like your archons, but if all you want to do is mass them and get upgrades then you should really learn to love the lower leagues because you're going to be stuck there forever.

I think you missed the point. It's not a question of it being a viable strategy to reach 200/200 3/3/3 archons, it's a question of how powerful that final product is.

OP said it himself:

I'm arguing that they weren't as strong as he perceived.
