Back in brood war, Archons were, well at least for me, extremely powerful, and an invaluable asset to my army. I loved them so much, I actually made shield generators, you know, those things that the probe could build, but you never really saw a use for, ya, there basically built for archons. When I first started playing, all I would do was mass archons and wreck every thing. Then of course my friends found out about the science vessel, and I learned that when you pair archons and corsairs, you’re basically untouchable...basically.

When me and my friends got our hands on sc2, I decided, to mass archons (little background, after they learned how to kind of, counter my archons, I stopped massing them for months.) so I'm really excited because now dark templar turn into archons too, so I'm just massing archons, and finally I've maxed 3,3,3 archons. I send them out against my friend who was zerg, and I got completely wrecked. I was so upset, how could my beautiful archon, whose whole purpose was to basically own zerg, be destroyed that easily.

After a few months or so, I saw an update; Archons now have increased range, and shield upgrades cost less. "YES!" I thought, "Blizzard is finally buffing Archons!" I was crushed when I learned that the buff the Archon received wasn't that helpful, they still stood absolutely no chance against a protoss player, and still died way to fast against zerg.

Now many of you are probably thinking, "Who the hell masses Archons in the first place?"...I do. It's just that, Archons were so good in broodwar, and to find that they just suck ass in sc2, I was crushed.

Now here's what I'm thinking, in the Legacy of the Void expansion, why not, since the terran get a medivac, why not give the oracle a shield replenish spell. That way archons don't get completely raped when there on the field. I realize of course that some might consider this OP but is it really OP compared to the Shredder, or to burrow move Banelings?

I think they're pretty strong right now... one thing I can complain about though is the sound effect the archon uses right now.

BW archon was a very intimidating roar/electric buzz like "AAAAUUUUGGGHHHHZZZZZZZZZBBBZZZZZZ." When you hear that sound you can feel in your gut all your mutas taking ~600 damage.

Sc2 archons don't make very intimidating sounds.

i remember in bw where in the late game u got like 12 archons and killed everything the zerg had, even fully upgraded ultras with darkswarm couldnt kill u, i also love when u had a ton of shuttle/reaver with the archon army sooo fun

the case can be made for almost every unit in SC2 .. Ultralisk in particular.

Because in an old interview I read some time ago with Browder or Kim, Archon were basically a way to recycle out of energy HTs and therefore have to be a little weaker.

Which basically sucks. Archons are cool. (And kind of scary)

Zergling sounds are pretty meek in comparison. Zealots, stalkers... Oh kay pretty much the majority of units.

Tanks are ok, but they lack the "beefiness" of the BW version. SC2 sounds like a shotgun, where as BW sounds like a bunker buster.

I think it's even worse for tanks. It used to sound so manly. Now it sounds cute =) pew! pew! pew!

A big buff to the archon would be to introduce its broodwar attack sound.
It would be a big buff to zerglings too actually.
(tried googling for those sounds but I only found the units quotes TT)

edit : haha should have read the thread before posting :p

Get archons and chargelots.
Let your zealots tank some damage while the archons are all powerful!

I think archons have the best portrait!

I won a game with archon+carrier+colossus, and other with just pure carrier archon. They are really really strong units, just need other really high tech units around for max effect IMO. (0 other units cept maybe a hero zealot that just lived forever)

Archons are amazing, what are you talking about? They're good against every zerg unit bar brood lords, and thats only cause they can't get in ranger, they crush all bio bar Ghosts as well.

I love archons. They are so good in sc2. They tank everything and do pretty decent dps. if you can get like 4 of them behind your chargelots they will help you win a LOT of engagements. They also tank PF's very nicely x.x lol

LOL. I had to log in and quote this. Excellent description. Really, take terrible sounds out and make them sound more terrifying.

I'm curious to know how good a player you were at BW. I played a D+ zerg summer 2010 (between SC2 beta and release when the iccup ladder was arguably at its best), and mass archons were a gimmick strategy. 5 hatch hydra wrecked strategies like this. Ranged zerg attacks have been and are currently the working counter to massing archons. What if you took it to the late game, massed corsair, and huge upgrades? I take a million expansions, max on fully upgraded hydras/guardians/defilers and wrecked you with a combination of dark swarm and superior army regeneration.

That's not to say they are completely uncalled for. In a balanced protoss army they do very well. They destroy clumped muta going for high templar snipes and were a perfect use for templars after you wrecked the zerg army with storm.

In my opinion, the biggest reason you're seeing problems with this strategy in SC2 is because most zergs will use range-based units (roaches and hydras). If I scout something like zealot/archon I beeline for a roach warren since I play a zergling/baneling-style midgame. That's not to say there is zero use for archons in SC2, but even lower level players will unwittingly counter the strategy just by following popular metagame trends.

I'm glad you like your archons, but if all you want to do is mass them and get upgrades then you should really learn to love the lower leagues because you're going to be stuck there forever.

I think you missed the point. It's not a question of it being a viable strategy to reach 200/200 3/3/3 archons, it's a question of how powerful that final product is.

I'm arguing that they weren't as strong as he perceived.
