I'm a lowly teenager from Australia who just recently got into the sc2 scene. I run by the handle of Odds, or Chadlynx. I play Protoss. I was fairly into Broodwar a few years ago, but it was a much harder game to learn than sc2 now due to the smaller community and the much smaller quantity of learning resources. Regardless I loved the game and tried very hard to get good at it, unfortunately I barely achieved C- before realizing that I wasn't enjoying the game anymore. My brother was the only person I knew that played, and any of my other friends who I played at LANs would simply get destroyed, as anyone of D+ skill or higher was able to destroy someone who was not familiar with the game, especially if they did not have any knowledge of build orders and such. So, it's sad to say that I quit the game and moved onto the moba games such as DotA and HoN.
So skip forward to late 2011, my brother has recently purchased Starcraft II, and is having a great time, I naturally purchase the game too and start getting back into the scene of starcraft which I once knew and loved. Many of the skills I had from broodwar had retained slightly and I started to familiarise my self with the game. The campaign revealed to me the differences between WoL and it's prequel game series.
I then go to play my placement games in the SEA server, and to my dismay I place in Silver. After a few days of play I realized that my ping was horrible to what was supposed to be my local server and then ventured onto the NA server.
At this point my interest in Starcraft II has become an obsession, I am watching streams when I can, devouring vods one after the other, and reading all relevant content I could get my hands on. I begin to win, a lot. At the very beginning of Season 5 I find myself very high gold, and even manage to promote to platinum very quickly.
Skip forward to now, I am currently ranked in top 8 platinum NA, eager as ever to become better. In this blog I hope to post my progress and my mindset as I hopefully climb the ladder and become a more proficient Sc2 player.
I thank anyone that has taken the time to read this, and I hope you guys will enjoy watching me grow.
My current takes on the three matchups.
Protoss vs. Protoss
This is by far my least favourite matchup, and for the first month of playing my PvP had turned into deciding whether I was going to proxy 2 gate, or just 4 gate. To be honest, I haven't really grown far out of that, however I tend to favour warp prism plays involving immortals. I really don't mind the losses in this matchup as usually I can draw out the game for another 5 or 10 minutes to practice micro.
Protoss vs. Zerg
This is my favourite matchup, and probably the one I have the highest winrate with. I used to despise this matchup as my brother plays Zerg, and when I was learning how to play he would proceed to go mutalisks every game and absolutely destroy me. I then discovered the 2 base 6/7 gate strategy which taught me how strong +1 and +2 timing attacks from Protoss can be, it also allowed me to exploit the fact that at lower levels of play Zergs will tend to be extremely greedy taking fast 3rds whilst not producing any units against FFE. I am still using this strategy quite frequently as I still find it extremely strong and I still haven't got it perfect so it's always there to work on. I was using this build exclusively, then whilst watching some vods of WhiteRa I discovered what has now become my favourite build which is the 2 base stargate into carriers. I found this strategy extremely fun and very very cool as it could involve motherships and more inventive play.
I must also note that whenever a Zerg tries to 15 hatch against me I WILL canon them. I don't believe it's safe for Zerg to hatch first against Protoss with the threat of the canons, but if they decide to be greedy, I absolutely will not let them. Many of my opponents end up cussing their hearts out at me, but I really don't care, you shouldn't go hatch first against Protoss.
Protoss vs. Terran
This matchup is the one I have the least insight into, but I don't think I'm doing too badly in. I usually do the standard 1 gate expand into double forge or to colossus tech. Very very standard. I tend to over produce sentries because I absolutely adore the units. Forcefield is the most imba shit in the game. However, doing this expand I get owned by 2 rax tech lab when they go pure marauders. Another huge flaw in my play is my inability to fend off drops whilst macroing and pushing.
