Hi, so im going to London Ontario (Canada) for 4 weeks or so in March/April. Taking a cource. Really looking forward to it. Canada is a place I have been wanting to visit for a really long time now, but its always been "far" away.
Im attending University of Western Ontario during my visit.
Basically I have some questions I hope some nice Canadians can help me with, going to be quite a few so answer as many or as few as you want to
Firstly, how is the barcraft scene in London Ontario ?
How is the social life on the university, are there many student pubs/bars/cafes, and are foreign students a welcome sight or just plain boring?
We will live at "The Mount", a guesthouse. Is it placed far fram campus and the "city core" ?
What is worth seing and doing in London Ontario, anything exciting? How are the prices for Curling in Canada. I have only tried it once since its really expensive here in Norway.
How are the distances to other large cities nearby, and can you go by both bus and train ?
Like Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, New York. I know Detroit is really close, and Niagra falls as well I have heard?
Lots of questions I know
If anyone feel like showing a fellow sc2 player around some between 16 march- 16th of April, please drop me a PM if your interested, always nice to have someone local who can show you the really good places.

don't go to detroit or niagara falls, you'll have everything worth seeing at uwo itself: cute blondes as far as the eye can see. man i wish i went to western t.t trust me, you won't even want to leave the london club/bar scene once you get there, don't worry about toronto or any other city..
|
its much better in Waterloo or missisauga or toronto than London, london is just way too far away from the center (centre is canadian english which is toronto).
Ontario overall is one of the strongest region in NA about starcraft. We have at least 15 out of 200 active GM accounts and several high master and HuK also lived here before he went to korea . Western ontario itself has a strong CSL team so you could practicipate in.
i will leave the rest of the questions to people from London :D

London would be welcoming to foreign students I imagine, I have a few friends there. The time to Toronto is 3 hours by transit and 5.5 for niagara. (using transit on google maps at the current time i tried it ) but only 2.5 hour drive to either, I imagine you could find grey hound busses or something similar or a carpool. Niagara is worth seeing if you have the time, but I have been disappointed each time I have gone. It is over crowded and touristy unless you go in the winter (which it sounds you will be), new york will be at least 10 hours away. Mostly for transit to other cities you need to go to Toronto first then re direct to your destination.
I just moved to Mississauga from Calgary a few months ago.

uwo has a huge population of foreign students, mainly asian
it's known as a "party school" and there's a bus route that goes right through campus to the downtown all day every day, if you have a uwo bus pass there's a bus for students that brings everyone back at the end of the night when the bars close
toronto is about 2 hours by greyhound, or train. the greyhound station and VIA rail are a block apart
i have no idea where you could even go curling here
|
I believe western's csl team has run a couple barcraft events.
Very good social scene, though I have no idea how foreign students are perceived.
Not sure about where you live, but the bus system can take you pretty much anywhere you need to go in town.
I don't know of any 'cultural' things to do in London, but curling is available.
By car, toronto is 2 hours, montreal ~7, don't know chicago/NY, detroit ~1.5, Niagara ~2.
|
i'd say north york toronto area is best since its closest to most events. London is a bit out of the way. You could take the GO down if you wanted to visit, I wouldn't mind gaming and such if you ever are around if I have the time. UofT is trying to have more events. We just had one last weekend was a blast!

London is full of bars. Its university town. There are something like 40-50 thousand university/college students in the city during the school year and because of that the downtown is littered with bars/clubs/pubs. There's an okay local music scene and a night out is generally a good time.
The city is only 400,000 people or so.. you aren't going to get anything near to what a big city has in terms of places to visit, cool districts, and so on.
We've had two barcrafts, and I'd imagine for the future mlg championship series we'll keep it up. I have no idea where 'the mount' is but if its anywhere near UWO campus you're about a 10minute bus/cab from downtown.
A lot of people are mentioning Niagara.. i wouldn't go. I've been.. its just a big waterfall with a shitty tourist trap city built next door. Unless you want to gamble in a crappy casino I don't think its worth the trip. You should go to Toronto, see a baseball game, look for some cool stores maybe go to rom, or mocca. Plus after you walk around all day there're lots of options as to how and where to spend the rest of your night.

Everybody in Ontario knows that Western is the party school in the province. I had some high school friends went there - they were reserved, studious types - and they turned into fun-loving monsters there. Enjoy your stay!
|
Hey, first of all going to Western will be the best choice of your life, the is definitely THE party school like optical shot has said. I am in my third year and go out a few times a week.
Firstly, how is the barcraft scene in London Ontario ? - You will not be disapointed believe me.
How is the social life on the university, are there many student pubs/bars/cafes, and are foreign students a welcome sight or just plain boring? - Diverse and very welcoming, I've never had a problem whatsoever and I am of Indian background. There is lots to do, such as watch the local hockey team which is actually pretty good. As well a lot of artists always end up at the London Music Hall.
We will live at "The Mount", a guesthouse. Is it placed far fram campus and the "city core" ? - I have no idea where this is, but it can't be too far away from campus, that being said, 1 bus will take you to the "city core" or a cab ride from anywhere $6-8 ish will put you downtown.
What is worth seing and doing in London Ontario, anything exciting? How are the prices for Curling in Canada. I have only tried it once since its really expensive here in Norway. - No idea about curling sorry, it all depends on what your interested in. A lot of house/electro/trace etc people come down and play in concerts here.
How are the distances to other large cities nearby, and can you go by both bus and train ? - Toronto is about 2 hours away via car/train - Montreal I'd guess is about 6-7 hours away via train
If anything just PM me and I'll try helping out the best I can.

like all unis there is definetly tons of bars and clubs. barcraft i wouldnt be so sure about. Im prettys ure the only canadian barcraft was in mississauga (mad hatter a few times) and maybe abuncha other smaller ones. London Ontario is kinda far from most other "big cities". I go to Mcmaster (hamilton) and that is an hour further away at least.
UWO has a reputation for being the party school with alota hot white chicks around (general majority racial population) Anything else specific about London Ontario and UWO i wouldn't know. Try googling for some attractions.
Other nice places to visit? Missisauga definetly. Biggest mall in ontario, nice food etc. Like Azn food? try scarborough/markham/york districts. And obvs visit downtown toronto

Biggest mall in Ontario is Vaughn Mills, which is the second biggest in Canada next to the one in Edmonton
|
|
I don't trust that one bit, says Bramalea is bigger than Vaughn Mills? I was just there like 2 hours ago and I really don't think so

Hey there. UWO student and one of the coordinators of Westerns CSL team here. Awesome choice in coming to UWO you wont regret it. As for barcrafts, we currently have 2 already planed for the mlg events in the future. One is for this Sunday to watch MLG arena and the other i believe will be on the 25th of March so you will be able to catch that. Also our team does meet up on occasions so if you would like information about that just send me a pm, or any-other questions feel free to ask.

ppl always say western has the easiest girls, so there you go.

Except for the 4 in Alberta, 2 in BC Montreal... been under a rock?
Barcrafts are popping up all over the place, if London didn't have one I would be very disappoint.

Anyone play SC1? I'm the leader and manager of the #1 foreign SCBW team :D
|
Most of the students that played SCBW have graduate or left western. There is probably still a few kicking around but I only really know of the SC2 players. Most of our players are either new to SC or stopped playing SCBW and switched to SC2.
