From the days of BW, I have always believed gg was a sign of defeat. The game may not have been good; in fact, it may not have even needed to last past the 1 minute mark, but gg was usually a respectful way of admitting defeat.
Now with SC2 (and even the ai says gg), I start to see another opinion, that gg is a sign of a literal "good game", which also confuses me because a "good" game is entirely subjective. In fact, some people are offended when there is no gg said and in some other games (league of legends for example), people will go as far as to even say "bg", which may or may not happen in sc2 but I haven't seen it yet.
So, TL, without going into debate on whether or not gg is needed (too many threads out there for that), what does gg signify to you?
Poll: What does GG mean to you?I lost (157) 73% we played a good game (57) 27% 214 total votes Your vote: What does GG mean to you? (Vote): I lost (Vote): we played a good game
And also, since the idea of a "good" game is entirely subjective,
Poll: What is a "good" game to you?I didn't mess up (100) 68% Other player did not go for an abusive strategy (48) 32% 148 total votes Your vote: What is a "good" game to you? (Vote): I didn't mess up (Vote): Other player did not go for an abusive strategy

I voted "I lost" as the meaning of gg, I feel like it's just like a virtual handshake that you do at the end of a game. As for good game, for me, it can be when it's been really close and I just win or if the person completely dominated me in an impressive way.

just admitting defeat in a nice way by saying good game whether it was 'good' or not.

In its use in StarCraft, I use gg as a way of conceding defeat in a game. If I only said it when I think we played a good game or something, then I'd "ragequit" a lot of games. To me, a "good" game is when I don't make really horrible mistakes and the game wasn't a silly cheese (on either end). You know, a back and forth game, win or lose; something that felt like a true contest.
That being said, when I lose, regardless of how, I say gg before I leave.

If a person's definition of a good game is not messing up, then they should never gg, because every person messes up something every game.
But anyway, gg-ing should be a sign of surrender. It's like a handshake after a game. It's also a sign of respect and a tradition since SC1.

Admitting defeat. When I do feel it was an actual good game and/or I got outplayed, I will add "wp".
|
A good game is any game that I can learn something from. In fact I think most "bad games" are games where I crush someone else doing an abusive/all-in strategy that I already know how to beat. If I can't beat it, then I still need more practice against it, so then it's not a waste of my time, so it's a good game.

I agree with Erik. GG means admitting defeat, and should be said when you lose. There are only two possibilities for losing. 1- you got outplayed IN SOME WAY or 2- You made some sort of mistake IN SOME WAY.
I always GG, even when getting cheesed. Sometimes I even WP a cheese, if it's really inventive, fresh, or I had no idea what to do about it.

gg is just a manner way of conceding defeat from what I remember in broodwar. if A game is really something I feel was played wonderfully from both players or just my opponent I'll say "gg wp" but nothing more and nothing less than that.

Wtf is "abusive" strategy? Aren't all strategies supposed to be abusive. If I win with cloaked banshees am I not abusing the fact that you were too terrible to get detection up in time. Sigh...
Anyway, on topic, "gg" to me is like saying "Hi we played a competitive game of starcraft and through your superior skills you won and therefore I hereby yield you the win in sportmanshipy and gentlemanly like fashion. Well done son"
|
GG for me means "congratulations, you've bested me in this contest of skill".
It's only an abusive strategy if the other person was using a 3rd party hack, in which case I'd just quit without gging.

Basically this. It's just a polite way of conceding a game that shows respect.

I completely agree with this person!

Doesn't necessarily mean I didn't mess up, because I do, a lot, because I'm not GM or Code S. But I'm happy enough as long as I play to or close to my level , and I always gg because it's a little bit nicer, but I gotta admit it's no big deal.

It's hard for me to answer in a clear-cut manner (as a poll would suggest). To me GG is a sign of surrender, but also can be said when expressing the feeling of a "good game". GG is a social interaction, something that has been discussed time and time again. I personally take great offense when someone offers a GG to me before the completion of the game. Because GG is offered up as a sign of surrender (even if you felt the game qualified as a "good game"), it's extremely offensive for your opponent to surrender for you. It's just poor gamesmanship no matter which way you cut it.
Conversely, I don't condemn someone for not saying "GG" either, nor do I feel that not saying GG (for whatever reason) is mean-spirited or "bad mannered".
|
whenever i leave a game i must press the "surrender" button which means i've admitted defeat. There is no point saying it again. GG just means "game over" just like a caster would says: "it's gonna be a GG" he/she doesn't mean it's going to be a really good game, the game is just going to end.
|
Your polls do not cover all the possible answers. To the second poll I would reply "a good game is an enjoyable game". As for the first poll, I chose "I lost", as I think typing "gg" is now part of the starcraft culture as a polite way of acknowledging your defeat. It's like a handshake after a tennis match.

GG means I lost, but a good game is when I play to the best of my abilities and someone still outplays me.

Abusive is proxying scouts.
I did GG that tho.

I always GG.
I GG WP if I feel like the player was a real cut above me, the kind I would have trouble winning 1 in 10 against.
It literally means, Good Game. I don' think it will ever lose it's meaning. Playing Starcraft with someone is like having a conversation. Sometimes its one sided, sometimes one person knows more, but the conversation is always fun and interesting- because its Starcraft! And it is, indeed, a good game.
