I generally make a comment, its not always GG. Unless I move my stuff into his units tho, or lose a control group right at the end (generally making it the end) i GG if the game gets to more then 2 base each.

If you play vs me, I wont gg in approx. 90% of the games, because I only say gg, when I think, we had a good game where my opponent won in the end, but did not go for shitty cheese or stuff like that.

I usually say "wp" if I thought we played a good game actually.

To me, saying wp means "I thought I did pretty well, but you just got the better of me".

When u think 90% of ur games are cheesy or abusive then I think the problem lies with you. maybe you and Idra can make a show about it?

it weirded me out when people started writing "gg gl" or w/e at the start of the game.
something in my brain felt like they were surrendering.

but yeah it just means "its over, starcraft is awesome"

It means "good game". . . Whatever your personal meaning of "good" is is another matter. I just say "wp" at the end because it's a much more accurate summation of my feelings most of the time. I generally don't think it was a "good game" if I lost because that usually means I played poorly.

I agree with this. I say "gg" every game, as a polite way of saying, 'congrats, you beat me.'

But i feel like a lot of the people who play this game right now are completely convinced that they played perfectly, and the only reason they lost is that marines / banshees/ colossi / mutas / infestors are imba. This thread has been made many times over throughout TL history. There are people who are socially inept and just don't get it, and there are people who realise its Brood War's version of a handshake after the game. Well, there's other kinds of people, like those who are BM, or those who have just never used it before, but mainly it's socially inept morons who don't want to say gg because they're upset.

I'm pretty sure whether someone gged or not after a game in ICCUP and foreign tourneys was not a big deal at all. Its this new wave of sc2 kids who are obsessed over this trivial detail.

I always "gg" when I lose. I have done that since I first started to play bw online and is just something you do. If I get badly beaten/owned I add a "wp" since well If they crush me and I played normal I guess they are pretty good and why not give them that pat on the back.

Some of my friends I play teamgames with even thinks I'm joking or BMing when I say "wp" to some awesome unit combo that kicks us before the 7min (blizz time) mark. But I honestly believe that If you cant hold something like that (or timingpushes in 1:1 games) the opponent is so much better than you and deserves a "wp" ontop of the "gg".

To me gg means "game over, I lose" and then you leave the game. It is a ceremony upheld by all who play brood war and part of the game culture just as much as bowing before entering a dojo or taking off your shoes when going indoors.

Like bowing before/after martial arts or handshake lines at the end of many different sports, GG is about mutual respect and competition. It shows your opponent (and yourself) that regardless of the outcome of the match whether it be thoroughly one sided, rage-inducing, super close, glorious, embarrassing, whatever the outcome is, it says to your opponent that you respect the game and you respect the opponent in the spirit of competition regardless of whether or not they deserve that respect.

A good game for me is a game I win. I type "GG" when I lose not because it was a good game for me (it wasn't), but rather, because it was a good game for my opponent. I am congratulating him for defeating me.
