New Strategies at the Highest Level

State of the Game brought up a very interesting point at the end of the broadcast just now. Artosis, Day[9], and iNcontroL discussed the viability of mech play in TvP. While the conversation was interesting enough, more interesting was the question of why we aren't seeing strategies like this at the highest level.

There was a vicious debate over players abandoning (vs. fully testing and discarding) new strategies. Artosis suggested that players aren't giving full attention to new strategies, while Geoff was sure that players were trying EVERYTHING out, and that a better strategy would be fully fleshed out in self-interest.

However, I think they missed an important point. There are too many competitions in too short a period. A player absolutely cannot take a half-baked strategy to GSL, especially now that the new format is so dangerous, so volatile. A player's livelihood is dependent on executing the best strategy they can as well as they can. Developing a new strategy requires surrendering a chunk of time to practicing it. Often, that means a tournament loss. A player simply can't work on something that isn't going to work for them in the next week.

With the nice break between GSL, MLG, and other huge events over the new year, it's entirely possible that we'll see new strategies. However, the schedule of premier SC2 (as fantastic as it is to have so many games), is so much more aggressive than the OSL/MSL tournaments from BW and I believe that the schedule is stifling strategic creativity.

So do you think we should have GSL/MLG/other premier events more spaced out? Even if it means less content.

Edit: Also, what about all the players who get knocked out of GSL before the finals? They have at least a few weeks to get together something don't they?

Having not watched it myself (I just don't have that kind of free time ) I don't have an opinion on what they said but taking what I read in your blog I would like to remind everyone of the BFH craze and every other emergent strategy that doesn't seem to be what they were referring to. Rise and fall and rise again of mutas, mass infestor play, Mech TvT Bio TVT! Strategies ebb and flow with now ones being added every month.

I don't know what they were talking about.

Yeah i was thinking the same about what they were saying. I do think that new things will be developed during the break, though im not sure it will be a lot. I'm hoping some high level terrans will come from the break and focused on new strategies rather than training down mechanics. I would love to use Mech/Air in TvP

In its current state bio may be strong vs Protoss but im just sick/tired and i frankly hate using Tier one units all game vs tier 3. Banshees may be fragile but man if you can snipe the obs or drop a pdd and cloak/decloak so you dont get feedbacked Banshees tear stalkers apart ( providing you harassed early on )

I remember when the SlayerS team came out of nowhere with the hellion builds. They never used them at any other tournament until MLG and man this was a head turner. Really looking forward to what people may think of.

not necessarily
this is just an inadvertent sideeffect of having so many tournaments.

I mean it's not like brood war or any other game has new ground breaking strats coming out every other week once the game passes the first 3 months. But hey, maybe they were just wishing for the best.

One thing I've thought that's related-

Starcraft 2 and BW are so vastly different for many reasons but one of the chief reasons? Opponents have time to study each other. At MLG there's no time to look forward to the next bracket when you compare it to bw terms. GSL is more spaced than MLG but it's still at such a rapid pace that you can practice against the matchup and even focus on certain things that are popular but it's very difficult to devote all of your time preparing for your opponents.

GSTL there were no real snipers. Just matchup experts. Things come way too fast for that in depth strategic planning to occur.

Sure this is all negative but the upside is we get a sick amount of games. I'd rather have that!

I think GSL works really well as a way of providing viewers with daily (or nightly) entertainment, but as it stands a GSL win mean nothing compared to something like an OSL win. I think it'd be nice if there was also another really big, but more spaced out tourney to go along with GSL.

Well in the foreigner communty we have tons of tourneys, but for the koreans they just have GSL and maybe one or two big outside tournaments if they are top level....this should leave plenty of time to perfect a new strat or build if they want too. Plus the team house environment should allow them to work together and iron out details very fast.

So for them i'd say they either aren't trying or its just not working.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

I'm not sure it's actually a problem. I think it's a significant reason for the stagnation of strategies that we (as people with access only to broadcast tournament games) see.

Of course, not all players are active in every tournament all the time, and my explanation doesn't cover so-called B-teamers. Perhaps these players are not good enough (yet or ever) to be innovative?

I think less tournys would be a good idea. This would lead to more practice time and better strategies.
Example: Naniwa skipped Orlando for just hard practice. Went to Providence and destroyed.

For individuals, perhaps. I think that it's fantastic for the scene to have so many great tournaments to watch.
