I know other zergs suffer from the drone whoring syndrome, but I think I take it a few steps above that.
I LOVED getting the macro advantage in BW, and SC2 only fuels that passion even further; it's almost my standard build going 3 hatch before pool ZvT in BW or squeezing out that 15/16th drone before pool when I open 15 hatch in SC2 even when I scout 2 rax agression on the way, simply because the map was tal darim and I love it when my zerglings pop just in time to fend off the bunker rush attempt. Surely putting the pool down at 14 would help me fend off the rush much more easily and save me from losses when I slip up my micro, but think of the 3 second larva spawn time you lose due to maxed larva idle time when you pool on 14 and that's not even counting the minerals mined from the earlier drone!
My early game APM is absurd because I click/spam a LOT, due to the fact that I enjoy getting that ~50 mineral advantage from optimally mining close patches more than I enjoy hitting 20 marines with 1 fungal; it physically hurts me a little whenever I misclick and a drone travels to a faraway mineral patch.
A typical build order ZvP for me looks something like this:
Scout 13/14 depending on map
15 hatch
15 pool
drone to very brief supply block at 18, then overlord
2 x queen upon pool completion
1 pair of zerglings upon pool completion
Drone till 25, then 1 more overlord, then drone till 28 (another brief supply block)
2x injects as queens finish
1 overlord, 1 additional queen and pure drones with additional overlords as needed from constant injects until 2 base mineral saturation, then 4 x gas, 9 x drone for a perfect 2 base saturation plus an expanding drone.
This is probably the ideal zerg macro build order, in that given no aggression it's the fastest route to 2 base maximum income.
Now, I substitute some zerglings for drones, and the path to full saturation is slowed as necessary when I do scout aggression coming, but even then I attempt to count units, take into account the reinforcement capabilities of the push as well as the map, then put down as little defense as possible even though by that point, I could afford to throw down 6 additional spines and still be ahead in macro. I dunno... I think it's the nature of the zerg that makes me into who I am, I hate the fact that every time I try to play SC2 my way, my opponent tries to kill me and I am forced to transform mineral harvesters into defense, and precious larva into units that don't produce me minerals. Whereas protoss can just warp in shit without even losing much mining time on the probe, I have to murder a worker every time I want to make something. I know the costs even everything out in the end but still, I don't even like the sight of losing drones. I can't wait for HoTs, I'm going to be that guy making 40 corrupter every game even though my opponent has no air units and I have no hive tech.
Surprisingly, most of my games are actually fairly short and end around the mid game mark. I have had MANY games, where I time it perfectly saving up X number of larvas for a nice muta or roach timing, only to rage quit seconds later from subconsciously pressing "S" "DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD...oh fuck gg". I guess my bare minimum defenses always entices people to make an attack, so by the mid game usually I would either be dead due to misjudgment or my opponent would quit, having 1/2 of my worker count or bases. Moreover, most of my longer games are actually not stalemates or GGs, they're usually me sitting there on 8 bases with 120 drones wondering whey I can't even break a 2-base economy opponent at 200 supply, or me taking a 5th and 6th even though I could just pump units and kill my 2 base economy opponent pumping off my current 4 bases.
If there was a fetish for things someone does in a video game, making drones and maximizing income would be it for me. There are countless games where I was already ahead in bases/workers, but made more drones and took more expansions because I just can't help myself. I have to basically consciously tell myself to make units and look at the keyboard, because otherwise my fingers are going for the drones whenever my concentration lapses a bit.
I think playing RTS games for me is more of a city building experience, and the post-game economy tab is my high score screen. I don't really even care about wins at all, it's all about the macro routine; for me, the best that SC2 games has to offer isn't satisfying comeback victories, but rather just me, at the mid game, spamming 5 s v click 6 s v click 7 s v click 8 s v click 4sdddddddddddddddddddddvvv, hopefully substituting as few Ds with Zs and Rs as possible.
I guess I have a good improvement regime going, trying to have the best economy possible surviving with as few units as possible, and if I keep practicing for another decade or so, I'll become Idra.
