In 1966 Flora H. Mitchell published a book entitled “Vanishing Dublin”.
It contained 50 of her paintings of locations in Dublin City completed in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Many of the buildings were threatened with demolition and development. Indeed by the time the book was printed some had disappeared completely.
During 2011, I revisited the 50 locations to photograph them as they now existed. Surprisingly, many still looked much as they did when Flora Mitchell painted them while a few had vanished completely. Others had changed but it was possible to identify the exact locations, while in some cases I had to make do with similar buildings to ones in paintings. There were a few locations that were no longer identifiable, and I was unable to photograph them.
