Recent FPS games in contrast with MOBA/RTS games.

I recently took the time to reinstall WC3:DotA, and the level of skill needed combined with the fun I get out of it is unmatched with any other FPS as of recent. If it had nice graphics showcased in Dota2, then I'd definitely buy it.

I can't say the same for FPS games. Not a single one released recently is any good, and the ones that are look really old. I've just settled with Warsow, Mechwarrior: Living Legends and Tribes 1.

So far there's a lineup of games I'm interested in as I don't care much about CS:GO or Battlefield 3.

Tribes: Ascend: It's F2P with centralized servers with no mapping/modding tools atm. I'm not fond of the 2 weapon limit or the loadout system they have in place, and the player physics look worse than T:V.

Planetside 2: Haven't seen much about this game.

Firefall: Haven't seen much about this either.

Hawken: This one is poised to be one of the best mech shooters. I was always dissatisfied by how slow mech shooters are and the massive amounts of splash damage.

Orion: Was previously a source mod, now it's a game built on unreal. They're revamping it so it's not completely generic like the source version.

All that's missing really is a Deathmatch game, like Quake or Unreal tournament.

I guess it's no longer recent, but Quake Live is an excellent game. I've found a new love for 1v1 deathmatch FPS.
Force staff is the best item in the game.

Pretty pissed off that both Bulletstorm, and now Rage, really dropped the ball with their multiplayer modes.

Tribes 2 classic is pretty awesome as well. Unfortunately the draft for the latest tournament has already occured, so you've missed that.

Rage jsut dropped the ball completely, in my eyes. I spectated/played for the first hour and a half, and it just didn't impress. Glad I didn't buy it.

I really wish UT3 had been popular. Deathmatch FPS are without a doubt the best games in the genre for me and UT3 looks good, but people just don't play it T_T.

They are so much fun. Fast paced (fast enough that it can keep my interest anyway; I wouldn't mind them being even faster) and you can play for 30 minutes and feel satisfied. I mostly play FPS and RPGs but without a good FPS to play in recent years, I feel like I need to dedicate long sessions just to enjoy a game since RPGs don't like you accomplish much in 30 minutes.

I like every single type of games and have been playing racing games, RTS games, puzzles games mostly to make up for them but it's not the same... FPS and RPG games are the ones for me. Too bad I hate all the "normal" stuff like CoD, Battlefield, etc. I like deathmatch, counter-strike, futuristic/unrealistic stuff (like Halo or Sanctum if it wasn't a tower defense game...), etc. Not a big fan of single player FPS games though, although I do enjoy things like UT3 which is just a deathmatch single player.

I bought Brink earlier this year because I thought it was different enough that I would like it but I was disappointed... plus it's vastly unpopular.

I've been waiting for years for a good deathmatch FPS game. I know there's quake but I mean a new game with slick graphics.

I'm by no means a graphics whore, and it's not really stopping me from playing quake, but when it comes to FPS it becomes more important for me (except CS...1.6 FTW). Reason quake is not on my list ATM is because of the skill level to start playing it. A new game would mean a better chance to learn the game with people that aren't 100 times better than you.

Seriously, I would cry tears of joy if a new deathmatch game out with good maps (optional because people can make some but still needed to build initial hype), movement, good weapons and great graphics with a ridiculously fast pace like we all love.

Why such a game doesn't exist, and why deathmatch games stay less popular than war games with 100s of players in each game that leave you not knowing what the fuck is going on because the maps are ridiculously big and boring, I'll never know.

OP go play Red Orchestra 2. Just got released recently so it has some little bugs but nothing really game changing. It's probably the most realistic shooter you can get at the moment so the skill cap is pretty high. No deathmatch mode though

For "modern" FPS, CoD4 is generally thought the be the most competitive of that series, and still has a somewhat large playerbase AFAIK. CS:S is my game of choice, but there's also games like TF2 and L4D2 that have decent competitive and casual communities. For non-Source games... Quake Live? CS 1.6 is like the holy grail of online, team based shooters, but unless you're gonna be super competitive or already have something invested in the scene there's no reason to play it imo, and like you said it's graphics are pretty dated.
