I have trouble holding this chord, i'll give out the tab: -12- -8- -9- -8- -10- -8-
So of course you do a barr at the 8th fret, ring on the 10th, index on the 9th, and pinky on the 12th.
The problem for me is that my pinky does not face down when I do it. The stretch is so big for me that I actually cannot press the 12th fret with the "belly" part of my pinky, but I am forced to use the side of it, which does not hold the fret in place as well and it sounds cracky when strummed. I guess if you try it and you don't feel the stretch you can move up a few frets and try to do the same thing but barr on say, the 4th fret and see if it makes it more difficult for you.
If you have a guitar handy please try to play this chord, and try to fret it on a classical or steel string acoustic. I can do this chrod on electric easy as it does not matter too much if you fret with the side of your pinky and the action is very low.
So is it normal not be able to use the belly part of your pinky and resort to fret using the side? I really think there are some topologies you can do to still face downward, but I am not sure how I might do it.
Any suggestions are welcome, but please bear in mind I have played classical guitar for 4 years rather consistently so don't just come in and say stuff w/o actually trying to fret the thing. But if you fret it and have some good idea I would love to hear them.

Is it Asturias?
Anyway I just checked how I do that chord and it is the side of my pinky thats hitting that high E. Are you sure you can't press harder with the side instead of re-configuring your hand to do it "properly"? I did it on a steel string (because I was already holding it while browsing TL ) and it seemed fine.

I can only fret it with my side :/
Classical:
Electric:
+ Show Spoiler +(my classical is in total disrepair as you can tell from the clear inch of dust and the missing string/ broken neck)
I think it might be normal. Your hands/reach might be a bit small and/or you might not be fretting hard enough (I think the former)

Other than that, I don't really know what else you could do but fret harder or keep grinding the chord until your pinky magically becomes double-jointed, sorry!

I don't think anyone frets this without using the side of their pinky.
Just build the strength in your pinky by practicing more

I tried and its perfectly possible to play without using the side of your finger.

if you pull your thumb closer towards the nut and angle your hand towards the fret it's not too hard to put your pinky on normally depending on the size of your hand

ouch, that chord hurts. my pinky has to be almost flat with the fretboard.

Look up some of the warm-up and stretching examples from John Petrucci's Rock Discipline. They can help you gain finger independence and breadth with your playing.
I spent many hours in high school using these... mmm the good ole days :D

Are you learning Asutrias? (good choice)
I can only play that chord with the side of my pinky, my fingers are way too short/ the stretch is way too hard. I don't view it as much of a problem, my pinky is strong enough to do it, it is just a matter of practicing the "grip strength" of the pinky over and over again.

Here are some pics... my thumb is towards the bottom end of the neck for stretchy chords. Happy practicing!

Wow you guys! Thanks so much!!
Yes it is austrias :p, I guess that chord is very distinctive ha!
I shall practice 1 hr a day until I can do the song.

I used to play that song in my high school music class and my friend referred to that scary chord as "the man chord."

hahahaha alrite. I ma make a man out of myself then
Playin gdifficult song like that is making me learn a lot, I feel my entire body is engage and not just my hands and arms, sometimes I find if I twist my body a little or bend or straighten it it makes certain chords a lot easier. I guess in the end it'll be a whole body playing the music, which should be the right thing to do.
Really thanks again for all the advise, and I really can see why this chord is so... "well remembered"

"well remembered" !! It was funny. Like I said earlier, I had my guitar when I came across this thread. I formed the chord with my hand and right before strumming it, I went "...wait a minute!"
Also totally agreed about the body thing. I find myself grooving around quite a bit if I'm doing something with a lot of percussive kinds of sounds in it. =)
