Hey guys.
By lucky coincidence I will be in amsterdam with my car on the weekend of the 17th, just 3h from cologne when this is going on, but how on earth does it work? I have lots of questions about going, which I would love to resolve before the actual date!
Firstly, I buy a ticket for the whole gamescom at their website, and the IEM is just a section of the expo centre I can go to?
Also, I am wondering for any cologne residents, can I just drive into the expo centre and park there for free? I looked at the gamescom website and it didn't mention any prices or bookings (maybe included with ticket?), or problems with the congestion zone?
I also wonder for any veterans of last year, how does the stuff we don't see on stream work? Can one watch players play games and maybe interact with them from behind cordons away from the main stage? There are several players who are hugely inspirational for me who are invited (non-korean) and would love to watch them play from over their shoulder.
Is it advisable to get there early and grab a seat and plant yourself there for the day? or do you get a much better experience from wandering around? Also can I bring my own food and drink in?
I really cannot wait to experience this, there is no esport scene in the UK and I have never experienced a large scale LAN - so this is a brilliant twist of fate ^^.
Thanks so much for any advice or answers.

Hi, 1) to attend the IEM you need a gamescom ticket the IEM has a hall there i belive it was hall 9 2) you can drive with all busses and trains within cologne for free with a gamescom ticket 3) at least on cebit was a player zone where offstream matches were played and most of the time the players stand right in front of the stage most of the times they are really nice and make photos with you or give autographes I´m also really excited to go there :D Hope i helped

Hey, I was at the GC last year and it was quite fun to watch Idra, Dimaga, Morrow and all the others. Quake Live was entertaining too. I'm sure you'll like it! To your observer question: well I didn't see an area where the players could practise, warmup etc like you described... only the main stage. Maybe there's an area backstage and I just didn't see it. Might also be possible it's not accessible for "random" people though that would be strange.

I'll try to get there from Dresden for a day or two. Anyone from Germany that knows DB is willing to find the cheapest way to get to Koln from Dresden for me cuz everything i find is 100+ euros one way O.o
It can be even for 1 day, i heard that there is a discount if you travel back within 24h, is it true? Sunday will be perfect for me i guess
Any TL Meetup already being organised that i dont know about?
Q: for ppl who are goin there, where are you staying at in Cologne?

Anyone going to cologne, no matter why, should go to the cathedral. It's probably the most impressive, imposing and beautiful building I've ever seen.
Not helpful for the question at hand, but I thought I should throw it out there.

I'm not sure about the prices offered by die Bahn, but you could consider using Mitfahrgelegenheit. It's a website where people who drive from location A to B offer a place in their car in exchange for (usually) a small amount of money (should be about 30€ for Dresden -> Köln). The website is in German though (Chrome lets you translate websites). You might take a look.

And considering its pretty much directly next to the central station, its easy to get there too.
On Topic of the Dresden - Köln tickets : its pretty far, so without a Bahncard you´d probably won´t get a ticket <100 euro.. cheapest I got was 106 for a ticket including return, which is still expensive in the sense of "hell, i lose 100 €", but for the distance quite okay (payed like 80 € for cologne-freiburg, and it was only 4 h instead of about 8... (dresden-cologne is about 600 km, so driving alone per car wouldn´t even be really cheaper).

Could anyone tell me what the price is of one of those gamescon tickets and if you are able to buy it at the venue itself?
