I just had the most incredible experience streaming!
I wanted to write this post so others who are maybe considering streaming can get my early experience(s) with it.
I had been messing around with streaming through Justin.tv for the past few weeks...but never had more than 1 viewer on my stream.
I hadn't gone all the way and setup my TL stream account until just a few days ago. (My quality was only so so...and before I went online on TL I was waiting for my GTX 570 to arrive - so I could stream HD)
So I line everything up and get ready to stream, and click "online" on my TL stream...
Right about then I realize that I said in my stream notes that I would play good music...so I quickly queue up some Oakenfold or whoever I can find at the time.
I'm completely cold, and only 2 people are on the stream...so I just do a custom game against a hard CPU to warm up a bit. (I assume both are me - 1 directly viewing justin.tv, and another directly viewing the TL stream)
Somewhere by the end of the CPU game, or my first ladder game, 1-2 more people are showing on the "viewers" in JTV...but no comments in chat.
A game or 2 later...5-6 are showing on "viewers"...but still no chat. So after the game...I go and proactively ask, "I'm new to streaming, how's the stream quality?"
.... no response ...
No problem...I just figure no one's really there and the 5-6 is a glitch...or maybe they're just watching the stream w/o chat open.
Within the next game...it's reading 10 viewers. It was a more intense game, so I had forgotten all about chat. After the game I glance at the 2nd monitor...and 3-4 people are dialoging about the game. (I remember one post said, "I hope he sees during the game")
The "point"/reason/experience I created this blog... ==================================================== The chat was good and all helpful information...it basically came down to that I needed to macro better. (My money had got a little high that game)
I engaged the chat and asked further questions. (I think I had lost to a zerg...I was going stalkers as he went w/ early mutas...and I became afraid to expand & afraid to go colossi...I basically froze & money skyrocketed. I was actually really disappointed w/ the game as I was on an 11 game 1v1 win streak up to this game)
They spoke of Day9, who I had grown to love & follow many of his casts...
I was supposed to go upstairs to hang out with the kids, and so my wife could take a bath...but the next 2 hours passed quickly as I was engaged in this amazing community. (My wife was totally cool with it is as I had made sure she got a bath the previous 4-5 nights)
In the end...I had only won 60-65% of my games...but received a HUGE amount of support & coaching. I've actually hired 4-5 SC2 coaches over the past year...and it was really good to get help through the TL community. (Even though the help was only via "text" compared to skype in a "real" coaching session)
I will definitely say that I very likely would've won more games...but there were quite a few slip-ups with me knowing there were 10 others watching me. (Stream got as high as 12-13 people)
It's really funny as I've played semi-pro soccer in front of up to 3,000, and I run weekly webinars online w/ dozens to hundreds of attendees... but yet playing a video game with just 10 people there made me really nervous. (I remember in at least 2 of the games...messing up something between game start, pylon at 9 & gate at 12...I NEVER mistakes in the first few minutes of a game. I also queued up my probe scout to check 3 base locations...and in 1 game...walked directly on the creep in the 2nd location - and kept going to the 3rd as I wasn't watching the minimap...I NEVER do that either playing on my own) ====================================================
So in summary: - The people watching were really cool and ALL had GM! (Great Manners) I was positive there would be at least 1 BMer in a crowd of 10.
- Lots of help was offered from the awesome TLers watching. - I learned that my focus needs to increase when streaming (when I play soccer or do my webinars...my level of subconscious understanding of the material is greater...so it's much easier w/ "people watching". My subconscious SC2 levels are NOT where they need to be - yet. - I saw the stream count grow over time...which means some were staying over time. - I had a very addicting experience...I'm really excited to share, learn, and grow with future streaming! (I'm sure you'll get another blog post the first time I get BMed live)
I look forward to sharing more of my experiences!
To YOUR Ultimate Success,
Jason Cardamone

Nice blog man, inspired to set up my own stream. Thanks man!!!

What level are you? I've considered trying to set a stream up in order to motivate myself to actually play more and get some feedback, but I just can't imagine people actually being interested enough to watch me over top players.

Im a gold toss player and I've been streaming for a couple months now, and I love it! Streaming is a great way to meet friends to play with and have fun, along with getting your self out there! I've received many free coaching sessions because they saw my stream!

Hey dude, great for you! :D I know someone asked above, but I'd like to know also, what league are you?

If you don't mind me asking, how difficult is it to set up a stream, and how tolling is it on your computer? I wanted to, but I wasn't sure if I would be able to.

That's awesome. I'm streaming too, but I don't get a lot of viewers. But one time I got this guy who stayed around and he even chatted a bit, commenting on the game. He cheered me on, criticized what I did wrong and it was really great to see. Even though I'm just a bad platinum Terran.

If you post your computer specs and internet upload (here or maybe post something in the tech support forum) we could give you a rough approximation.

Brother...I totally hear you about people wanting to actually watch my stream. I couldn't believe that I had more than 1 or 2 watching my stream as well. What I came to realize is that this TL community has a lot of awesome people that LOVE SC2, and LOVE helping others. (There are trollers/BMers out there...but as iNcontroL says "they're the outspoken minority")
Also - It IS motivating to keep playing...I played at least 2x as many games yesterday as I normally would've played.
I know a few people asked...but I'm currently high(ish) silver. I'll be in gold soon as I'm beating about 50% of the golds I'm matched against.
Also...feel free to see my writeup in my stream...which explains more of my mission from "Bronze to Masters": http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/coachjc

It's not terribly bad to setup...depends on how technical you are. (Actually...it's quite easy if you follow through the guides on TL)
I spent a bit tweaking my xsplit settings as some of the posts on TL were dated...but trial & error will get you to have a steady stream. (It is somewhat heavy on your CPU and GPU if you're going to stream at 480P or higher. 480P = somewhere around 600x800ish. If your CPU/GPU was "pretty good" 2-3 years ago...you can likely stream at low to medium resolutions.)
Here are a few links to get you started...
Getting your TL stream approved: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=175682
Using the programs to stream from: (Do a TL search for "stream program" and just start browsing...pros & cons to the different ones. I personally use xsplit)
Best of luck streaming!

Hello, I was wondering what kind of Download / upload speeds you have?
I want to start streaming but am fumbling around right now with the settings. My DL/UL is 40Mb / 2Mb.
Ive been told that 2Mb upload is not good enough to stream.

Hey I have been streaming a bit recently and have been too afraid to post it on TL's streams because I'm only Diamond level Zerg...
But for streaming I had a question. You say you play music during your stream and a lot of other pros do it as well- how do you do this? I've searched so many times online and I've even asked about everyone I know but still no answer. And on top of that, how do you do something like Destiny where he plays music and comments on his game at the SAME time?
Please and thank you; you've inspired me to get more serious about my stream!
