Before I post this I have to emphasize that despite my criticisms, the SC2 story is still awesome and as with WoL I am going to play the hell out of it, that being said I have a little bit of a gripe with the changes to the Zerg that the HotS preview has given (as well as the press event)

I am a little disappointed over some of the story angles of the Zerg Blizz is implementing with heart of the swarm. To explain I will try to make an example.

Anyone else here a Star Trek fan? Well I used to think the Borg were the coolest things ever, I mean the whole connected intelligence and rapid adapting and assimilation I thought was one of the coolest ideas ever for an alien race. What disappointed me about the Borg was when they introduced those Borg queens. Suddenly what was once this amazing collective intelligence had the weak spot of these controllers. Honestly, it made them feel weaker, defeat-able, which is not what made the Borg cool, they showed up very rarely and when you did deal with them you knew some serious !@#$ was going to go down and that the good guys would be lucky to get away alive let alone defeat them.

Heart of the swarm while not doing the exact same thing, is taking away some of that cool fear from the Zerg that I love so much. One example is that now this swarm without individuals (besides Kerrigan and the Overmind and the old Cerebrates) suddenly has all these queens who take various chunks of the swarm away under their control (I thought Kerrigan killed all the cerebrates in brood War precisely because of this?). The amazingly cool aspect of the Zerg’s quick adaptability and rapid evolution is no longer just a cool attribute of the species, but we find is actually managed by some monster named Abathur. Also I’m not so sure about this, but it sounds like the Leviathan is some kind of Zerg spaceship… really?

I thought adding depth to the Zerg was fine. I really liked the revelation about the overmind that was given by Tassadar in WoL so don’t think I’m just angry about change. I think the Zerg could be so much cooler is all.

I dunno overall it just feels like Heart of the Swarm is going to make the Zerg seem less like the deadly unstoppable swarm.

In my opinion, nothing in SC2 could ever live up to the "bad ass" factor of the Overmind. The voice, the words, the power, spreading it's mind-controlled tentacles across planets with an endless swarm of creatures...

The zerg are broken and battered. They have had many changes in control and have been in crisis and at war for a long time, so I would expect this sort of development. This is actually a interesting take on diverse yet hive-mind creatures. Evolution occurs because of benefit to the individual genetic code which causes it to propagate, and by banding together individuals become stronger and thus more likely to survive. However it is still true that other individuals may seek to further themselves by perverting these tendencies toward cooperation.
Okay I just remembered I finished my degree I don't have to BS anymore: it might be evolutionarily beneficial for individual members of hive-mind groups to develop control abilities, thus this sort of development is plausible especially with the rapid evolution observed in zergs.
As for the evolution thing I think that the idea is that the zerg both have their intrinsic evolution and a directed evolution, not that all their adaptability is the result of an organism.
Lastly the zerg having a spaceship is not nearly as stupid as mutalisks flying in space.
Edit: also I agree the overmind was badassery incarnate, if derivative of other ideas. It really put me in the mood to play zerg when he told me to arise and awaken to my birthright.

The Leviathan makes sense in a way because how else are the Zerg supposed to get from world to world? Just like in Starship Troopers the bugs needed a way to travel from planet to planet, so they all hopped in a giant space-faring bug thing.

I also like the mechanic of Zerg drop pods/meteors. It reminds me of the Flood where they would crash infested ships into things and all kinds of Flood forms would come out and start infesting other things.

The thing about Kerrigan though is that her management of the Zerg is entirely different than how the Overmind did it. The Overmind really wanted to take over the sector for the glory of the "Swarm" (in addition to his other purpose) while Kerrigan just seems to use the Zerg as her personal army to screw up whatever the hell she wants. The Queens are an extension of Kerrigan's control, while the Cerebrates were an extension of the Overmind's control. Both needed them to control their broods. They're basically generals, and some go rogue.

As far as Abathur goes he just seems to be a personification of the Zerg's ability to mutate and incorporate favorable genes into its various species. It would make sense that after the Zerg first started corrupting and assimilating species on Char that creatures would evolve that could add an element of control to this process. It's why the Zerg advanced so quickly in so little time (enough to fuck up the Xel Naga) because the elements of randomness and natural selection have been eliminated. He reminds me of the Shapers that the Yuuzhan Vong have (if you're familiar with the Extended Universe of Star Wars).
