As promised, here's why you should play Vindictus:
Do you enjoy hacking and slashing? Do beautiful graphics and combat make you moan? Would you get innate pleasure out of grabbing an enemy by the neck, smashing their head into a wall and then sliding their face along it to leave a beautiful swath of blood? How about breaking their back over you knee? Chopping them down in a whirlwind of blades? Slicing them to pieces with a scythe? Spearing them and giggling when you get it perfectly through their head? Charring their flesh with a giant fireball?
How would you like to go against bosses where, unless you dodge their attacks, they will kill you in 2-3 hits? Think that will get your adrenaline pumping when that 15 by 20 foot polar bear turns to charge you?
Well, then! I'd like to tell you that Vindictus is 100% free to play! I play on the West server and have various lowbie characters as well as a upper-range one that I am currently playing!
Vindictus is a beautiful game that is extremely well polished. Not only is the combat and graphics lovely, but they've gone to the lengths to input other parts that really make it not feel like a free game. Screenshots? Pfft, they have a video capture built in game. In fact, the game automatically screenshots when you kill a boss to give you epic shots free of effort! The in-game tutorial videos are awesome! And you even find yourself giving a shit about the NPCs and the world you're trying to save!
Some additional bits to note:
You can use your enemy's weapons When you armor breaks, it looks the part in game (tattered, shattered, etc) The environment is highly destructible You can use anything you can pick up, from fences to pots to corpses and live enemies, as weapons It uses Valve's Source Engine so you know the physics are awesome
I liked pulling infinite numbers of rocks out of plates that were floating in the air. Havok makes everything hilarious. Unfortunately the amusing physics-related silliness are about the only thing that stuck with me after I got bored shortly into the ice place. I even made a compilation of those a while back.
Why you shouldn't play Vindictus: Choppy on some cards Long leveling grind Repetitive and boring gameplay
The free to play is an illusion as if you actually want to be competitive you have to spend money. Tried to give this game a chance and wanted to like it, and it was not happening.
DC Universe actually has very similar gameplay to Vindictus, and imo is a superior game, even though DC Universe ain't exactly the best material either

If the boss fights are anything like Monster Hunter, I'd be sold. How does it hold up with latency? Getting two-shotted in MH is all good and well as long as I can dodge when I hit the button.
Maybe this will slake the monster hunting thirst until TERA or the Demon Soul sequel

This sums up Vindictus nicely. Played it for a month, and I quit. Linear dungeons, no pvp, no big hooks really. The only real thing that kept me going was doing the quests for the items, and even then it started to get boring :/

The game was meant for korean internet so if you don't have great internet the game can be really laggy only if you host, or live really far from host.

Are there even any online games with complicated combat? The only one I can think of is DFO :| I can't say much about the other classes, but I play Scythe Evie and combos are basically the same as Dynasty Warriors, (Limited Amount of Left Clicks -> Right Click for some Special Attack) although there are some castable spells.
The lag isn't that bad though, definitely a lot better than DFO... couldn't even hit any monsters in that game if one person in the group didn't port forward ~_~
I play this game T________T Mildly. Its been changing a lot and I can't keep up due to having other shit in my life.
Misconceptions/Stuff: There is PvP now. It is repetitive as fuck. You don't need money to be competitive. (theres almost no competiton and money doesn't really give you anything) Lag is practically fixed now and is superior to before.
Its pretty fun though, I like the combat/battle styles.
weeeee
edit: i play on West edit: its good brainless destroying shit and pretty objects when you have loads of brain intensive schoolwork. believe me i have brain inducing schoolwork...fuck that shit
On April 28 2011 12:55 Ulfsark wrote: Is there any pvp at all?
iirc, no. Honestly, id play it if everything wasnt so dependent on the server though, i thought it was pretty good. i had to solo everything though
There are only two servers with thousands of active people on each, I don't see how it's dependent on the server. I was running straight level 52 raids yesterday and did not have to wait more than 5 minutes between each one to get a full group of 6 people.

It is very similar to Monster Hunter, especially the later bosses. I must admit the first zone is somewhat easy, but it definitely gets pretty damn challenging! You can always dodge attacks as long as you don't make yourself run out of stamina or trap yourself in a corner, but timing your dodges and such is the hard part!

It does have pvp, they added it two months ago.
I'm not sure where your complaint about "linear dungeons" comes from. Are you talking about the actual dungeons (which are linear, but I don't see the issue) or the challenge of them? The later levels are much more challenging.

I haven't played either, so I can't really say. It's mostly based on a normal to smash attack balance. If you just smash attack, you use one move, if you normal attack, then smash attack, you do another, if you two normal attack then smash... etc, etc. All in a row, of course. The first few combo moves can be pretty weak, but the later combo moves take a lot of time to finish. Thus, if you get greedy and keep trying to do your stronger attacks, the boss will have more than enough time to turn around and punch you in the face.

Only thing I will add is the lag issue has really cleared up. During beta it was horrible but I re-installed it not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised by the improvement. I have a couple characters in the mid/high 20s and log on every once in awhile still.
To me, in the end the game is free and fun.
@ Riku - I heard they were running free boats. Is that still going on? Or was that a short promo? Not that coins are an issue since they restock for free 3 times a week.
I've just recently picked up Vindictus because of some friends, and although it's really different from any game I've ever played before it's just not for me. I really love the idea of perfecting dodging a boss's attacks, then counterattacking quickly (playing a Lann right now). And this kind of gameplay is both challenging and rewarding. But when I perfect learning a boss's moves and it's taking 20-30 minutes to kill a boss at my level because all I can do is shave away .33% of their health at a time, it's a really big turn off.

It's going on for a month, started on the 20th, so there is still another 3 weeks of free boats. They might extend it and were talking about removing coins fully.

If you're talking about anything 2 stars or higher, it isn't meant to be soloed at your level. While there is increased experience in soloing it, I'd recommend fighting it with your friends! Even having one other person there makes it four times faster to kill, because one person can be "taunting" the boss while the other one wails on it.
I duo everything except raids and don't find any boss to take more than 1-5 minutes, the 5 minute fights being retarded ones my level or tough heroics where I die or something else goes wrong.
Also make sure you're using the right attacks. Right now, though my gear is 10 levels below me, a 3 normal -> smash combo takes down a fourth of a health bar on a boss. If I get my set and weapons for this level, I should be getting half a healthbar per combo (assuming a gliding fury proc, but... well, I'm a willpower whore, so it almost always happens).

At this point it makes sense to me. Maybe there is a coin shortage at your level, but I dont think I have ever come close to depleting my coin supply. Ive never used one of the special coins either.

I am not sure what level you are nor how much you play. However, I started running into coin shortages after I had progressed fully past the first boat, as that is the only boat which is "free."
I do play a lot, however, and I have had to use silver and crimson tokens on multiple occasions.
I have two chars and both are about halfway or a little more through the 3rd boat. I was hooked for awhile but I never played everyday. I would get a few hours or so after work every other day or so.
I also probably wasted a lot of time waiting for parties. Groups were really hit or miss when I last played. If I had a good group that stuck together we could grind out a bunch of missions but its slowed down a bit for me.
Side note I am enjoying the increased AP cap. Now I can sign on less often and spend down points easier.
Played a little bit last night, seems like it has a lot of potential. Picked Evie since I wanted a big slow weapon, but I guess you don't get the scythe for a while (Hammer/GS user in MH). However, I do like the spellcasting focus system atm. I do wish I could walk slowly at least while casting the basic spell, since all the focus spells make you stand still.
Is there a TL group/guild?
Also, what are the little flower petal things that fall to the ground (mostly from bosses and glowing urns)? I couldn't find any information on those.

#1. The little red crystals? They restore small amounts of HP. Evie actually has a skill the turns small objects into those crystals.
#2 Each character has a starting weapon and then the choice to move to a different weapon later.
Evie: Starts pure mage and can heal. Later (Lvl 20? 24? its been awhile) she can learn to use a scythe but gives up the ability of casting spells. Fiona: Starts sword and shield. Later can learn how to equip a hammer. Lann: Starts dual weilding swords. Later can equip dual lances.
Each choice has a different playstyle. They each have their pluses and minuses. However most characters have some common traits you can level if you are not sure which style you want to use. The choices are fairly balanced though.
Mmm I've been playing more on my Lann and it's getting more fun. I guess it just took more time to get used to dodge timings and stuff. Still, the idea that you can get stuck on terrain... or stuck on the same fucking pixel as a boss and thus unable to run, is really dumb. I know there's an /escape option, which works some of the time, but that's just avoiding the problem altogether.
Does anyone know how do the East and West Coast servers compare pop wise? I have a couple chars near lvl 30 on the East server, but things are pretty quiet at my level most of the time.

They took out the token system completely recently. I've played a lot of Nexon games in the past and must say their customer service has been top notch when it comes to Vindictus. Wish I could say the same about DFO and the other games I tried. For a free-to-play game this is as good as it gets and it's already won several awards.
Karok is coming out soon on June 15th. I have several high level characters on East if anyone needs any help PM Kingdom/Effie/Tink.

The prices on the East server are very inflated compared to the West. I cannot comment on how many players there on on West because I don't play there. East is very active. Find a good guild, or local players from around your area. That is what I did.
PvP wise, a lot of players are still pass out on it. I think it's a lot of fun. Anyway, it's a work in progress.
The Korean servers next update is 30 man raids and guild wars. It's pretty sick.
