Its kind of weird when things line up in a way, but it all started when I was in my english class discussing how in the last 20 years since the invention of the internet how much has changed in our lives. It was pretty predictable, the older folks in my class were against the internet/only had 1 or no computer in their house. A lot of the younger kids have decided they aren't even going to subscribe to cable/satellite once internet TV gets to a certain quality point. I am personally with the younger generation. I watch Hulu/TVDex/TL streams/Adult Swim way more then I watch my parents HD cable packages(that includes all the BS HBO and other premium channels). I also get to watch the free web shows that people put out that normally I wouldn't even know about.

It is just far more convenient for me to just watch it on my HTPC thats hooked up to my 32inch when i want it while I am doing what ever I am doing on my actual computer next to it. The selection is also just as good, even when I was a child and watched cable I only actually watched ~10 shows amongst 70+ channels. Most of the other stuff was just useless crap that was just filler till the show I wanted to watch came on. Also I don't spend as long watching commercials(Adult Swim+Hulu are the longest ones averaging 2:30 seconds instead of 10 minutes like on cable).

Im also moving into my first apartment here soon and my parents were helping me budget costs and it absolutely blew their mind that I would just pay for more bandwidth/speed instead of getting basic internet+basic cable+Phone Service. I plan on just using my cell phone and not having a land line at all and if I don't have enough minutes and I'm at home I can just get on vent or skype or aim or tons of other free alternatives.

I guess the point of this post is just a written form of my realization that as all media converges together and better computers/internet are put in people's homes, how the possibilities start to become endless. Especially since I build my own computers, Ive got all kinds of spare parts and whole computers just lying around that I could easily put to use as "cable boxes" or media storage for videos. People can start literally amassing so many selections of things that even if you sat down and watched nothing but all the content you've downloaded/can stream you would never finish it all. I guess I'm just happy that we've come so far and I can't wait to see where we go with this.

I know what you mean, it's awesome to be able to watch everything on the internet instead of on TV. I actually barely ever watch anything on TV, though that's also because it's mostly in Danish which sucks.

I pretty much use the internet for everything tv/movie related. My parents have an expensive cable package but I never even have to touch it lol.

I don't have any way to watch TV at my house except online.

Then again the last time I ever really watched anything on TV routinely was around the time Ken Jennings was on Jeopardy! daily.

Yeah I pretty much feel the same way. I never watch TV because
a) The thing I want to watch is never on when I have free time
b) I can find it in better quality online
c) I can download it and rewatch it, burn a DVD, etc on the computer.

Huzzah. My parents actually are thinking about upgrading their cable package. I pointed out it would be much less to upgrade internet, but alas my concerns were not listened to.

I was one of the only kids at my school who grew up without any sort of cable/satellite tv. My parents weren't crazy anti-tv people, they were just somewhat cheap and didn't see the need for it.

It was always a bonding experience when it came up in grade-school conversation that another kid lived with just 9 channels as well. Thinking back I actually had a bit of pride in it for some reason.

Just think what this does for people like Day9 and Husky?

Individuals, who have a niche(originally) market that they produce content for. The internet provides a cheap way of reaching a massive audience. Can you imagine if they had to try and get their stuff on TV or something similar?

The internet, the great leveller

I find myself watching less and less tv as well, especially with the availability of shows over the internet. On a side note, if "BS HBO" means you aren't actually watching any of the programming these channels put out, you are missing out on fantastic TV. I personally only really watch the series that HBO put out, but I'm looking into catching up on Camelot and Spartacus on Starz.

I know exactly how you feel, my parents never take my opinion into account when I was younger yet they'd get mad if I didn't fix the old stuff/hook up the new stuff.

Ive got some bunny ears hooked up to my TV now as well, but that is more for this local cartoon station for my kid with real obscure crap toddler toons that I couldn't probably find if i wanted too(mofos play a 5-6 hour marathon of He-Man/She-Ra every night mon-fri lol).

I watch TV at other peoples house because they aren't as "technologically advanced" but I honestly get kind of irritated at all the commercials. I mean really, 30 minute time block and 8-10 minutes of commercials, of which 95% don't even apply to me. Even the few ads I get on streaming sites is still stuff that is niched towards me.

There is nothing on HBO that is worth paying extra for because if it is even half-way decent it will eventually be on DVD/Netflix of which I get a wider selection of shows for far less math a month.

i had a professor at college who would give us assignments off of TV shows and whatnot. it blew his mind that i haven't even owned a TV in years (im 21), let alone one with cable. goes to show how socially acceptable it is.

hulu + netflix + the ridiculous amount of streams on TL give me more to watch then premium cable packages.

one day soon the internet will rule all

I get my internet through cable. Hoorray for cable! But yeah, as many have already pointed out, an internet connection is just better. Most of the stuff on TV is just crap and the stuff you like can just be downloaded/streamed. As has been pointed out in the recent articles about Starcraft on TV the IPTV thing will probably overtake TV.

bah
thousands of channels and only a couple of hundred of them have something good on
/fry

but seriously, i haven't really even watched TV in a long while, and i don't see why i would start any time soon. i occasionally watch it while eating, and it still bothers me that pretty much to watch a 21 minute episode takes 30 minutes. kind of annoying lol

I mostly use my TV as an extended display for my laptop, but I do use it to watch local news every now and then and weather sometimes. The biggest use I have for it though is either using it for playing sc2 since the screen is bigger than my laptop or use it to watch sports. Finding streams is difficult online and I've always watched sports on TV. Whenever i graduate, the only reason I'll by a bigass tv is so i can watch the nfl, mlb, premier league, and nba games on a bigass screen in 1080p without any lag.

I personally don't own a TV. I use my computer monitor for everything related to series and movies (occasionally I go to the cinema). I decided to go this route when I moved out since I watched an average of 1h a week on television, then mostly with other family members.

Since the first thing I do after installing my OS on a computer is disconnect my DVD player (I should look into flash disc installs) this means I can in no way get the older forms of mediums to play in my home.

Will be interesting to see how the future of online television develops. I can already watch a decent portion of the content on the major Swedish channels online for free on their sites.

My family has never had cable, and with unlimited internet, I really don't see myself ever getting it.

Actually we do have FiosTV, because triple package (phone, tv, internet) is apparently the same price as internet + phone, but the TV is in a guest room so no one watches it anyway.

The biggest reason is that on TV you have to spend a lot of time searching for what you want to watch, whereas on the internet, I'm 3 seconds away with a google search from any torrent of any show in existence.
