If any of you know of Suggy, you probably know about his live-commentary episodes of ladder games for an online series called the Starcraft Connection. What he does is say on the spot why he is doing what he does, what went wrong, what went right, etc.
But there is something I noticed:
Suggy absolutely never has a game plan ever, if anything he just asks his friends over at his house for what they want to see him do. And they often just give vague descriptions like, "Carriers!".
Suggy literally has no expectations or game plan ever going into a game ever. And I noticed he also loves cheese. Whenever he sneaks a probe in his opponents base and it goes undetected he will always go with a 4 gate opening. Always.
It just seems like Suggy plays absolutely random and completely wings every game off of game sense and experience with no idea of what he wants to do beforehand. So should I just try to drop learning standard openings altogether and just try to wing every single ladder game with no game plan and do things off of whim and spontaneous tendencies? Will I improve the fastest that way? Is that the way to play?
And Suggy, thanks for giving back to the community completely free of charge. There are a lot of grateful players out there that appreciate what you are doing (even if not enough of them give you the thanks to show it) so please keep it going and thanks again! It's a real shame Starcraft Connection doesn't get as much support as Day9 does.

No, having a plan is almost always better than making it up as you go.

Then why does Suggy prefer not having one? What does he see that we don't?

I downloaded and am reading the guide however I am not so certain how much I will even be able to learn from this since I am Protoss and this is not for Starcraft 2 but thanks a lot anyways. I'll see if I can find anything useful from it.

Look, I remember from your last post that you were gold. There's a reason why Suggy can pull it off. He has the fundamentals to pull it off. He's also probably built the game sense from playing standard often enough. You don't. Build up your fundamentals, get to masters, and then you can probably pull it off. For now, the best way to learn is with a game plan.
However, if you're not looking for the best way to reach the top, do whatever the hell you want. It's a game after all. It's for fun. You can go that style; just don't expect sudden, drastic improvements.

Ver's How To Improve is more about mindset than gameplay. It's necessary for reading for anyone who wants to know how to get good.

Have you EVER heard of a player preparing for a tournament? They usually aren't preparing how to wing it
|
Do whatever is more fun for you. Some people like planning, some people like winging it. Some people like somewhere in between.
Improvement usually comes from study more than anything else, so I wouldn't worry about which way you decide to go.

I agree with Ver's guide. mechanics and mindset are the way to go. When he says if you want to hit B rank on ICCUP as a noob, the way to go is 2 barracks before supply (or something similar) he's not lying. However, would you be good at a game 30 minutes in? What you practice is what you will get good at. The key to being a successful player is employing a strategy that is flexible. You not only want to just survive, you want to completely obliterate your opponents force without sacrificing any of your economy or economic growth. You must find the proper balance, and whether that is by going ok CC at 15, etc, etc, by the numbers, or by being flexible and spending your money asap on whatever floats your boat, that is up to you.

Nothing he says in some videos he plays ladder just to mess about and he customs his serious builds. He just plays online for fun and asks his friends because he is trying to entertain them since sometimes in the video you see a big screen with the games suggy plays being projected.
