I find so much, these days, that brood war fans have such a defitist attitude, and it's a cycilical kind of attitude:
Brood War is dead -> therefore I shouldn't try to get good at it -> therefore BW is dead.
So is BW dead? On the contrary. SC2 has brought a huge new market, but it's a market that is still unexposed to BW, and the primary reason for that is the obtuse times proleague, msl and osl are broadcasted at for American and European timezones; Alexa says 37% of traffic comes from America and Canada, with the rest primarily in Europe. With the newer user base that SC2 has brought, all that is needed is more exposure to VODs of Korean tournaments, in addition to more exposure of the foriegner-only events (for example, the iCCup Starleague); this isn't an easy task, but it will reap benefits into the BW scene: if events like the ISL get a large viewership, this creates an avalanche effect with more commercial interest from sponsors, which leads to more events, which leads to more viewers, and so on.
But how can the average fan contribute to the scene? Easily. Post (and comment/upvote if relevant) news to sites such as http://reddit.com/r/starcraft, primarily sc2 fansites, and such. Don't fear a bad reception. If that doesn't appeal, then streaming on tl and casting games is a brilliant way to show commitment to the BW scene. Bust misconceptions about BW and teach people. Run training programs on iccup.
BW will never die, and is still very much alive - both games can co-exist, but only if fans are active. Let's make this happen, tl!

iCCup Starleague is a fantastic initiative. I also doubt BW will die. If there are still people on this earth believing, then it shall live forever. BW for life my friends.

I really don't think BW fans (at least diehard "true' fans) have defeatist attitudes. I feel that most of these views are shared by SC2/BW fans who lean towards the newer game.

Lol I love the fact that there are so many blogs with "BW" in the subject right now. Fact. BW will live on.

In many ways broodwar is stronger and tougher then sc2. And even if it ever comes to the point that no one will play the game anymore, the history will still be there. Broodwar has already written history and I doubt that it will soon be forgotten.

BW is pretty much the most immortal game I can think of. It ain't going anywhere.

I agree with phosphorylation. All the BW fans remaining that I've seen have the complete opposite of defeatist attitudes. That being said, it certainly couldn't hurt if they put even more effort into spreading the BW love as you say ^^

Also, please be polite to the SC2 scene. The SC2 fanboys may flame and troll the BW fanboys, but that doesn't mean the BW fanboys need to flame and troll back. The last thing we need is another SC2 vs BW flame war to occur in every single thread where SC2 and BW fanboys meet.
I do respect BW/SC2 fans coming out and pointing out the flaws in SC2/BW, but I don't respect fanboys flat out yelling "BW/SC2 is sucks and will fail. SC2/BW lives forever at the expense of BW/SC2!" If the BW fanbase is as old and mature as it claims to be, it needs to remain mature and set a proper example in the face of the plethora of newbie SC2 players that are flooding these forums and others.

Brood War isn't dead, Brood War as a professional platform outside of Korea is dead. There'll be BW players for years and years, and, honestly, I'm completely happy with just having a community existing so long to always provide games.

Yeeaahhhh......I think it's legitimate to have an opinion as to whether or not a game sucks or not. -____-x I think discourse over a game's qualities are necessary in any forum that discusses anything about said game.
I think unwarranted comments are bad, yeah. But when one says things like "BW has ____ flaws..." or one says "SC2 has ________ flaws (whose side am I on ), and actually gives some reasons as to why, there shouldn't be people saying "OMG FLAMEWTF"
BW will survive as long as I live. I don't think I have any intention on switching over. And even if I do, it'll only be for the lulz and most likely because all of my friends will have switched over.

BW is the bomb. 4LIFE! I was back in the states for a month (and away from my nice cpu) so I played BW on my laptop for a month. So fun. Such a good game. After the internet is taken down, BW will live on as the intergalactic LAN event of the ages!

So I absolutely cannot play BW anymore. I've become so dependant on the things added to SC2 that I am just completely awful at BW now. But my god, I do love watching it from time to time. There's room for both. I love both. They're so interesting in completely different ways.

Except these topics have been debated over and over, and nothing of value was gained except perhaps some grotesque release of your frustrations. People have said "BW 4ever" or "BW will never die" literally a million times. I am tired of reading it. For all the talk, I've only grown less and less willing to actually try the game. All you see is people talking about how much more skill it takes, how much more hardcore it is; rarely about how fun it is, and even then usually in terms of their own nostalgia. People saying "this game is dead" never help, but saying "BW will survive as long as I live, for the motherland!!!" isn't much better. In the end, I think that the BW community could have made (and still can make) a much better showing for itself. Instead of being so defensive (doesn't matter if it's trolling in SC2 forums or counter-trolling in BW forums) about the state of the game, improve it.

The reason I don't play BW much is because I'm rather busy nowadays. If I have more free time, I would continue training on Iccup (despite there being fewer foreigners now). I really don't think BW will die as long as there are Koreans
