http://www.mediafire.com/?paz8yrn794ak6gz Notes: This replay pack will show case my new zvp style banelings into ultra and show casing some good usage of the style I am winning a lot with lately. This should have some zvz ling/infestor into ultra but probably early stages of me developing the build and not as refined as my guide, I could be wrong though.

It would seem the fast attack by protoss would guarantee they'd be up on upgrades until you get +3 carapace (if they upgrade continuously). Meanwhile, your ventril sacs finishes before your +2 melee, meaning you can't exploit banelings 1 shotting probes right away. On the flip side, roaches remain to be the core unit for the most part, so do you find the carapace effective enough on both roaches and lings to prioritize it over baneling attack upgrading, as well as a quicker timing to 1 shot probes? EDIT: On second thought, if you started it at similar times, the majority of the time you would remain on the same level. This means that anything besides the beginning parts of a very sharp timing will you be behind on upgrades. hmm..

In other words, he isn't researching drops just to kill probes and hope his opponent is under defended. Armor applies both to lings and roaches unlike attack upgrades and its better to have a more durable army to hold down the protoss balls while you hammer them with banelings. Ouch. Well I don't think it's gimmicky in the least, it's just a crisp timing that gives an opportunity for a ton of damage relative to the cost. Even if protoss is prepared, your banelings are probably the most pivotal part of the strategy regardless-- I think a baneling dropped in the middle of stalkers hits up to 6, and with +2 that's a substantial amount of damage. Ideally your banelings will be raining, therefor not taking any damage, therefor not benefiting from armor. So logistically armor applies to 2/3 of your core units: ling and roach. The melee upgrade also applies to two: zerglings and banelings. So the question more or less becomes is the lings and roaches having more lasting power against the toss army with less damage output better than having higher damage output and less survivability. This can be an entire debate by itself. The two turning points would be... In favor of melee: opportunity to 1 shot probes the moment ventril sacs is finished, and having that ability both at an earlier point and for longer throughout the game. In favor of carapace: mid game engagements aside from very crisp timings from toss you will be even or ahead on carapace, which is quite substantial. Also, if you're safe for a fast hive, you can continuously upgrade for very quick +3 carapace, which is great. I think the attack upgrade will win a ton of games pretty easily just from probe damage and sloppy protoss engagements, but theoretically I think carapace should be a better choice if both players play correctly. From the little that I watched, blade used drops for primarily banelings. Considering he was not fighting sentry heavy armies there is less need to drop an entire army onto his opponent and having a concave quicker than dropping units out is the faster, therefore better, choice. As I am not referring to overlord drops as a harass/game ending strategy I would not favor melee first. Obviously you get melee upgrades but carapace first is not a poor choice.

I don't know what you mean regarding dropping an entire army on to his opponent, do people do that? Which part of my post were you referring to with that?
