I was very fat as a child, and was bullied for it (that and being half algerian and having, and i quote, "nigger lips". Kids hey).
When i arrived at university i weighed around 245lbs ie. a lot when you are just under 6 foot. Over the 5 years i was there (4 undergrad, and 1 for my masters) i got my weight down to 165lbs through a combination of weight lifting 3/4 days a week, and climbing on a daily basis (we had an indoor bouldering wall at uni).
For the first time in my life i was truly proud of my body, i actually had muscles, and one better, I even had abs. Now, I was a guy that hadn't ever taken his shirt off in public, but once I had this new body, I became a bit of a show off. We're having a bbq - shirt off. We're going to sit in a beer garden - shirt off. "is that the sun i see poking through the clouds" - shirt off. I grabbed every opportunity to take my shirt off with both hand (thats right I became THAT guy).
Anyway, i left university 2 years ago, and the combination of no exercise, and a desk job has meant that my weight has gone back up to 195 lbs. I'm unhappy with my body again, the shirt has stayed on for at least a year, and I've lost the confidence i gained when i lost all the weight. I realise its my own fault, which pisses me off even more, and i realise that i need to start doing something soon, otherwise 245lbs will become reality for me once again.
Basically, i have to thank you mate, looking through your post and at your pics has motivated me to start losing weight again. I also think that i might start a blog, showing before, after and the transition in between. Hopefully the TL community might help keep me motivated.
Thanks again pal
i'll be looking for your blog in the future!
Well you lost 20pounds this is a good performance !
I'm trying to go the other way though (get 20 more pounds) and that's tough damn -.-
I have a very hard time eating a lot more than what I eat already (which is not much) (and proteins food makes you full in no time).
Good luck for next step, but I feel you are on the right track, at least you feel healthier.

If you want to gain weight, best thing to do is have four meals a day and drink protein shakes with if your meals. You will se in no time the weight you will put on. I gained like 40 pounds doing this.

Running is not nearly as good as it gets for burning calories, resistance and HIIT put much more stress on your body in a shorter amount of time, and burn more calories for longer.
Alright I can definitely agree with most of this. You certainly do want to be strength training, as decafchicken says more muscle = less BF %, not to mention you'll almost certainly look better with more muscle as well. Additionally lifting is fantastic for other health benefits such as bone strength and density.
I don't know enough about interval training as it pertains to weight loss to comment, but my general undertstanding is that since its intervals the ON periods are obviously more intense than a normal easy run pace. As a result the differences in calories burned is similar (hard + easy = all medium), but with the HIIT that level of intensity can also keep the metabolism running a bit higher longer after the run.
If your goal is overall weight loss + fitness though I still don't agree with the idea of cutting running out entirely. Weight training and interval training are both great for overall devlopment of a great body, but they don't do tons for good cardiovascular fitness. You don't get that much faster (over disatnce) from doing interval training; its the consistent mileage that really builds good aerobic fitness. You don't get the aerobic benfits such as increased cardiac output, increased capillary density, increased lung volume, increased ability to transport oxygen in the blood, lower blood pressure, etc. from doing HIIT. Intervals are the last step in preparing for races, and primarily aim to strength the bodies ability to process and remove lactic acid and work more efficiently at intense paces.
