I was happy at 180 2 years ago and I ballooned up to 220 until 2 months ago. After missing a bus because I was too unfit to sprint to catch it along with seeing some ugly pictures of myself on facebook, I decided it was time to lose some weight.
I decided to make some changes + Show Spoiler +-running 5 times a week for the past 2 months(nike+ is awesome!) -stopped drinking pop -stopped eating fast food and ate more greens -started working out during breaks at school
Its been 2 months since 220, and I've dropped to 200 but I haven't been able to run lately because it started snowing and I have no access to a treadmill. My goal was to hit 190 by new years but I don't know how I'm gona make it with out running. I also have a bet with my friend to see who can get to 180 first and I want to win.
Girl blog angle + Show Spoiler +I got invited to a few parties coming up to new years. I already feel a lot better about myself, but it would be nice to bring my A game. Along with a few cute girls who I find quite intriguing. I realize that it shouldn't matter, but I feel a lot more confident and am way more sociable when I'm happy with myself.
The quest to 180 continues! Any advice, trolling or criticism is welcomed. =)

You're getting healthier and you're feeling better about yourself. Of course you're going to feel more confident around girls too (:
GL and keep it up!

I really like that redhead... a lot!
Good luck to you sir. I myself have given up smoking, drinking coke (drank 2lt a day) and losing my stomach before new years. It's easy if you have the will to do it.

I bought her a TL shirt for her birthday lol.

good stuff man! You don't look too big at 220, how tall are you?
And keep it up, you're one of the tiny percentage of people that notice they are getting out of shape and decide to actually do something about it. Once you reach your goal, try to maintain your lifestyle changes. It can get difficult to stay motivated for extended periods of time, so try to do your workouts with friends, and don't get lazy with eating fast food. Get er done! Gives coach-like slap on the ass
That comes from a past story. I played on a rep baseball (rookie, we we're tiny, about 9 or 10) team as a child, and the coach would always slap our asses (motivation?), and my dad called him Horace the Spider, and told him to stop touching me. Kind of awkward, lol.

Yeah, you really don't that big, you've got to be pretty tall. Regardless, I definitely enjoy reading these types of things, since I'm working on a "fitter me" as well. You've got this!

Cute redhead~ I keep telling myself that I'm going to run/do sit-ups/exercise, which I do for a period of time before stopping and then losing everything. It's so disheartening losing muscle/fitness so easily after months of hard work.
Glad to see that you're working hard +_+ good luck! Are you very tall by the way? You don't look 220 even in your 220 pictures.

You're probably right. I usually run late or early and it gets a bit colder during those times. I think i will give it a shot though.
I'm 6 feet, so bit above average I guess.

you aren't fat dude you should give yourself more credit. I understand if you want to tone your muscles but don't take it so far.

very good Schools been getting the better of me recently, havn't been excercising nearly as much. I should get back to it...

chease how old are you? Most universities around here have a gym where students can go to for free. If not I would highly invest in a gym membership if you dont want to run outside during the winter.

Edit: Forgot to say. Awesome you lost 20 pounds, half way there! Keep it up!

Well done man. Nike+ is great. If you have friends that run as well, things start to get really fun. I don't know how much you'll get into it, but taking it a step further, why not register for a half or full marathon running event if your still running come this spring. If your running 5 times a week and your this young, it's pretty likely you'll end up doing that later on in life anyway. Best of luck, get to that finish line man. Blog more!

If you ever need a more serious diet program, weight watchers is wonderful when strictly followed.
I was 208lbs and I lost 50lbs during my summer break of junior year.

Nice job.
And you don't/didn't look like a blimp or something in the 205/220 pictures. I know a handful of people who are 200+ but have the frame for it and look like they're in pretty good shape.

i like you, CheAse. and go get that redhead.

Kudos to you mate. I know how hard it is to lose weight.
I was very fat as a child, and was bullied for it (that and being half algerian and having, and i quote, "nigger lips". Kids hey).
When i arrived at university i weighed around 245lbs ie. a lot when you are just under 6 foot. Over the 5 years i was there (4 undergrad, and 1 for my masters) i got my weight down to 165lbs through a combination of weight lifting 3/4 days a week, and climbing on a daily basis (we had an indoor bouldering wall at uni).
For the first time in my life i was truly proud of my body, i actually had muscles, and one better, I even had abs. Now, I was a guy that hadn't ever taken his shirt off in public, but once I had this new body, I became a bit of a show off. We're having a bbq - shirt off. We're going to sit in a beer garden - shirt off. "is that the sun i see poking through the clouds" - shirt off. I grabbed every opportunity to take my shirt off with both hand (thats right I became THAT guy).
Anyway, i left university 2 years ago, and the combination of no exercise, and a desk job has meant that my weight has gone back up to 195 lbs. I'm unhappy with my body again, the shirt has stayed on for at least a year, and I've lost the confidence i gained when i lost all the weight. I realise its my own fault, which pisses me off even more, and i realise that i need to start doing something soon, otherwise 245lbs will become reality for me once again.
Basically, i have to thank you mate, looking through your post and at your pics has motivated me to start losing weight again. I also think that i might start a blog, showing before, after and the transition in between. Hopefully the TL community might help keep me motivated.
Thanks again pal

I'm with ya. I am usually 178-185 and 5'11 but since uni started ive gone up to 198. I have not broken 200 since I was a fat adolescent. I have been pretty anxious about it and so I've gone on a diet and am jogging at the gym 2-3 miles every other day.
and I thought if you bodybuild you end up weighing more since muscle is heavier than fat. Is this not the case? I am already husky and I'd rather slim/tone down than get bulkier but I guess a little muscle growth wouldn't be bad.
|
You look really good in the last pic dude, keep on working! Great effort, good luck
|
Get your hair cut bro, the first pic you look best in haha.

If my fat ass can marry a model you can definately have confidence to start chatting up girls.
But women do care what you look like, and the better you look the better your chances are. So keep in the habit of working out and work slowly but surely to your goals.
Also a haircut, women love well groomed men, or just seeing your making an effort. when ever you leave the house or meet anyone have the mentality that your crush will be there or might turn up so always look your best; clothes, grooming, etc.
Also if your into anime watch Hajime no Ippo you'll want to get exercising for sure. Music tracks that get you in the mood are great to; like Eye of the Tiger etc.
|
Keep working at it. Oh and definitely don't write starcraft on arm, from my personal experience I can tell you that chicks don't like that!
|
congrats! how much do you run a day?
|
Im not fat that much or anything, but god i could use your spirit man. Been sitting infront of the computer for so many years doing nothing. Im so god damn lazy to start anything like you are.
Oh well, army soon so atleast some exercise. Good luck to you sir!

I think you can still drop that 10 pounds by new years. Whilst running is helpful for developping cardio and losing some fat, in my experience i've found the crossfit routines to be much more responseful for fat loss, and you tone up in muscle (not bulky).
my favorite set lately is 10x cleans 10x pushups 10x squats
and you do 10 sets of these or for a full 20 minutes if you can last that long. Ideally, no breaks in between, but if you reach a point where you're super sore, stretch for 30 seconds and then keep going.
these are the results i managed to get doing this only TWICE a week, compared to five times a weke. and i'm still eating a lot of junk food and stuff. A lot of the times, i could only do it once a week because of midterms >_<
Picture in spoiler + Show Spoiler +
Cindy's are also great, just replacing the cleans with chinups. When you're too weak to continue doing chinups, just do negatives instead, still tiring on your arms.
another one was 400 meter run, 10 pushups, 400 meter run, 10 squats. orrr, 400 meter run, 10 situps/knees to elbows, 400 meter run, pushup/+squats
the idea is to make your entire body reach an anerobic state so that your heart has to pump blood everywhere instead of a specific section (running mainly pumps to legs and core, only a little to arms).
You have another 5 weeks until new years! YOU CAN DO IT! wooooooo

Stick to heavy lifting, high intensity interval training and good diet(eat natural foods, 300-500 calorie deficit) if you want to lose the weight, going jogging doesnt do much for you. Refer to the tl health & fitness thread if you want more help

Yeah, don't let the cold weather keep you inside. Obviously we are talking colder than this but around 40-45 is like optimal running weather for shorts/t-shirt (might need gloves). If its colder than that ill usuallly switch to windpants and then add a long sleeve athletic shirt/hat/windbreaker as the temperature gets colder. Anything above about ten degrees or so I find that combo to be totally fine for. Rarely gets colder than that here but if it does I'd just add another layer or maybe a sweatshirt or something.
Honestely I love going outside to run when it snows because it just has an epic feel to it. Nothing like running along in the middle of a massive snowstorm around twilight.
If your worried about traction a real cheap option is to get some 3/8 screws and put them into an old pair of running shoes. I get good traction even on pure ice with this; and its alot cheaper than going out an buying yaktrax or something.

I don't understand the angle here. Weight loss is about calories in v calories out. Running 10+ miles a day burns alot of calories; assuming you don't gorge yourself just because your running you'll have a way larger caloric deficit. Running is about as good as it gets for burning calories per unit time. The lifting, diet, etc, are all good and I couldn't agree more; but I think its not at correct to say running doesn't do much for you.
|
The main loss of fat isn't from discrepencies between caloric intake, but from your bodies metabolism. Burning fat requires muscle, cardio doesn't really do that as well as high interval weight lifting in different areas around the body. Cuase its just like how there isn't such thing as location targeted fat loss. so ultimately, you're just entering a constant state of an elevated requirement for energy such that your body is forced to store less glycogen and use it up. So the fat loss isn't simply for caloric discrepencies but your bodies metabolism and how good it is at shitting it out.
this isn't to say running a lot DOESN"T help, but a mixture of the two is better. Some days runnning, some days high intensity interval workout will yield the best results while developping a stronger cardiovascular system :D
|
Thanks project virtue In addition to that you will increase your muscle mass which will decrease your body fat %, you will activate more of your body vs just running, and you'll end up looking better faster.
Running is not nearly as good as it gets for burning calories, resistance and HIIT put much more stress on your body in a shorter amount of time, and burn more calories for longer.

Alright I can definitely agree with most of this. You certainly do want to be strength training, as decafchicken says more muscle = less BF %, not to mention you'll almost certainly look better with more muscle as well. Additionally lifting is fantastic for other health benefits such as bone strength and density.
I don't know enough about interval training as it pertains to weight loss to comment, but my general undertstanding is that since its intervals the ON periods are obviously more intense than a normal easy run pace. As a result the differences in calories burned is similar (hard + easy = all medium), but with the HIIT that level of intensity can also keep the metabolism running a bit higher longer after the run.
If your goal is overall weight loss + fitness though I still don't agree with the idea of cutting running out entirely. Weight training and interval training are both great for overall devlopment of a great body, but they don't do tons for good cardiovascular fitness. You don't get that much faster (over disatnce) from doing interval training; its the consistent mileage that really builds good aerobic fitness. You don't get the aerobic benfits such as increased cardiac output, increased capillary density, increased lung volume, increased ability to transport oxygen in the blood, lower blood pressure, etc. from doing HIIT. Intervals are the last step in preparing for races, and primarily aim to strength the bodies ability to process and remove lactic acid and work more efficiently at intense paces.
