Hey TL, I need your help with something.
So I've been shaving for the past 2-3 years now, and I have been using A Gillette Fusion Power razor (pic below):

this particular one.

So for the past 2-3 years, I've always used that razor, but the thing is that the shave I've been getting is not as close as I'd like it to be.
I've been considering buying a new one (preferably electric) that will give me a closer shave. Do you guys have any suggestions/recommendations for a good one that gives me a close shave?

Using a shaver is a much different experience so keep that in mind. It will take a while for your beard to adapt to the new shave. Personally I use some Braun Shaver with the self-cleaning stand, and it works for me but it definitely isn't as close of a shave as a razor.

I too use an electric shaver, though I know a lot of people (and I agree) say that it doesn't give as close a shave as a razor does. It doesn't really bother me though since it's a load less hassle than using a razor.

I just buy packs of the Gillette 2 blade travel ones it's cheaper then buying new heads for a razor like yours haha. You can shave against the grain if you want a closer shave but you'll likely get some ingrown hairs.

Electric wont get as close, but if you're clumsy and just want to shave and get out they do save a ton of time.

yeah same i need the time and efficiency because i CONSTANTLY wake up late and basically have to rush my morning routine. can't really do that with a real razor, so i settle for the electric.

An electric shaver will not get as close as any blade razor. They deal with longer hair better, but they won't get as close.

I use a Fusion Power and it's pretty damn close. I run the blade under cold water and use Nivea shaving cream. For under my chin, I do multiple passes left/right to make sure it's as smooth as I want.

You're on teamliquid.net; you should also know that Gillette sponsored one of the greatest OSLs ever.

Shouldn't the blade be run under hot water because it opens pores or something and makes the hairs stand up? I use the same razor! :D

Yeah if you want a closer shave, electrics do not compare with your "safety" razors (the ones most people use) which in turn do not compare to a straight razor (the oldschool one which you probably saw most recently in the Johnny Depp movie where he slits people's throats open with the razor then turns them into meat pies).

Pics of straight razor:

In terms of speed, electric > 'safety' > straight razor
Generally people don't use straight razors though because you need alot of practifce, dexterity, and careful, precise control, otherwise you might fuck yourself up realllly bad. But if you really want a closer shave, really like the style, like to be a little more environmentally friendly, and just want to look cool and manly and brag about using a straight razor, then you should consider a straight razor.

For me though, I'm using a similar razor as yours and it works out fine for me, as I like the balance between closeness of shave and time required for the shave. Standard razors can be very quick if you know what you're doing and can give you a close shave if you have the time. I do own a straight razor though simply because I like the style, however I rarely use it cause if you don't practice regularly you get pretty slow and you worry if you might cut yourself up right before an important outing.

From my personal experience, if you want the closest shave possible and you're using the normal razor:
1. Make sure your blade is still sharp by comparing it to a new blade, if performace is similar keep your old blade until the next check
2. Wash your face with cold water to make the hairs stand up as much as possible
3. Make use of shaving cream (obviously)
4. Shave twice in opposite directions; usually this is most effective if you go once in the direction of the hair grain and then again in the opposing direction
5. Aftershave it up when you're done

Of course I only do this when I have time and I'm going out somewhere; on a normal day I just wash my face and razor with cold water, then quickly but carefully shave once in the opposite direction of the hair grain.

Japajew. The polish wins out when it comes to facial hair, the japanese wins out when it comes to tanning.

keep going with that one , electric ones suck in my experience
if you have weak stubble they might be ok though , my stubble is thick and coarse so it just feels like its pulling rather than trimming

I prefer my Mach 3 Turbo. Never tried a Fusion though. I find that the cream is super important. Barbasol with aloe ftw!

As everyone is saying, you cant use an electric for a close shave. stick with the safety razor

Take a hot shower before you shave. The heat makes the hair stand out a little bit more so you can get a closer shave. Make sure the blade is still sharp. The main thing that dulls a razor is water, so if you shake the razor, and blow on it to try and get what ever moisture you can off it, the head will last longer and you can keep getting a close shave on an older head(god damn those thigns are expensive)

Real men use cold water.

Hot water will make your hair softer, but that's not the point. Cold water makes your hair stiff and less likely to bend, thus the razor is less likely to slip over them. The blade might wear out quicker, but you'll get a closer shave. Are you shaving your face or are you trying to preserve the blade?

On top of that, cold water is healthier for the skin and is quite simply invigorating. Hot water dries out the skin and leaves it itchy. No matter what, you should be rinsing with cold water to close the pores.

When I think of safety razors, gillette fusions don't come to mind. You should look into the old school safety razors. I feel like I get a much better shave, and the blades only cost about 50 cents each. I don't feel like I am shaving with a toy designed for 14 year olds anymore.

I also have a straight razor, you get much better shaves but its a bit more time consuming, since you have to strop it each time and take a bit more care.

This all really depends on how hardcore you really want to be.

I have a straight razor and a strop for when I need to sharpen it. I have at least a dozen different shaving creams, I use a brush on occasion, and I have a Gilette Fusion as well as a Merkur Safety Razor. The Merkur is very cost-effective since the blades for it are very cheap in comparison to the Fusion. Interestingly enough I find myself using the Fusion more often than not nowadays though simply due to my personal preference. To me, the razor is not the most important issue.

Using the right shaving cream is essential to your shave, if you are feeling tugging and pulling, your shaving cream is not good. I normally lather up four times in order to do a pass with the grain, one across the grain, another across the grain the opposite way, and finally a fourth for against the grain. It sounds ridiculous but I feel no tugging whatsoever during my shaves, I apply minimal pressure, and I use short strokes. Using something like Proraso or Tom's of Maine shaving cream really makes a difference than just using Edge or Barbasol, which I still admit I have done and do when I run out of other stuff.

My advice is to get a newer blade razor, try using some Edge shaving cream, and try using multiple passes with at different angles. If you keep finding yourself unsatisfied, then you can take it one step at a time by trying a new cream, maybe investing in a brush, and finally trying the Merkur razor.

In regards to the hot water, I've always been a fan of using the hot water before my shave, despite the fact that I do indeed take cold showers. Do make sure you use an aftershave without any alcohol in it though! Use cologne if you want to smell good, don't wreck the skin of your face for a nice smell, alcoholic aftershaves dry out your skin big time.
Im pretty good at whistling with my hands, especially when Im holding a whistle.
