Any body here notice that in the campaign mutalisks are actually seen flying through space...
They actually float through the vacuum of space, flapping their little wings as they engage in interstellar travel.
Am I the only one that finds this odd? The first time I saw the supposedly ominous army of zerg fliers fluttering about through the great beyond I actually laughed out loud. I don't think that was the intended effect.
Which also begs the question; how do the zerg move from star to star? They don't have warp speed travel like the terrans or teleportation technology like the protoss.
Do they just flap their little wings at the speed of light, or what?
Edit: So I am clear; you cannot fly in space by flapping your wings.

Who cares, realism in video games is totally overrated.
If you truly care though, then nydus worms??

WTF !?
LOL I cant believe you are so thick. If you would have taken the time to read the compendiums the lore fully explains in the starcraft universe why it works.

zerg can use warp space, the overmind was able to create warp rifts or w/e the technical term was and go pewpew to other stars, they could even warp directly onto a planet's surface unlike terrans who have to warp in outside a planet's gravity field or something like that. (except in sc2 campaign where the hyperion goes whoooosh whilst still on the planet's surface).

It's not something I have to teach you, merely something you have to unlock within yourself.

That still doesn't explain why mutas flap their wings in space!
|
They flap wings in space because ships can shoot healing rays at people.

They flap their wings because they are flying, duh.

You should make a blog about why they put the pew-pews and the explosions sounds in Star Wars because the sound is a mechanical wave, hence the dogfights should be totally mute.
|
The description of Mutas in the original sc mentioned that they are capable of travelling through space like that so this does not bother me at all : 3

While everyone's being nerdy, can some1 explain this?
How are banshee drivers not blind when they cloak? To be invisible, all light has to pass through you. This means your eyes don't absorb light, so you obviously can't see. I can maybe understand ghosts, because u just order them around, but how do banshees target other units and operate their planes without sight?

Someone please start a Science of Starcraft video blog.

Light doesn't necessarily have to pass through you, it just has to seem like it passes through you. For example, there is work being done on vehicles where the skin is essentially one giant screen that plays a video of what's on the other side (obviously more complicated than that, but as an example). Therefore, nothing needs to change on the inside of the vehicle, the outside skin takes care of all of it.

Maybe I've not seen this moment yet, but when I've seen mutas "in space", it seemed they were just high in the sky, with the camera moving around them showing the starry sky / another planet.

Its actually a stream of nano-bots (: not magic - far from IRL technology sure, but theoretically that's how nano-tech will work in the future. Also about the Mutalisk flying in space well, they aren't flying, they built up momentum while still in a gravity field. Once they enter the vacuum that momentum is maintained. Thats the scientific explanation if you want one.

Wow if the Zerg still uses anything similar to Behemoths to transport their broods, I imagine the Protoss/Terran would be jumping for joy when they realize they can take out an entire Brood by discovering the timings of their long space-journeys.

cloaking isn't invisibility look up optical camouflage

Because we move our legs to walk. And open and close (?) our lungs to breath.

Horrible explanation. We wouldn't move our legs consciously to try and walk in space, either.
The one where the guy said how we move our arms while we walk is a much better to comprehend.

Actually, you probably would move your legs to try and walk, or gain some kind of foot hold on something if you were in a space suit in space. It's a reaction, just like you move your arms when you fall, it doesn't do anything, but you do it anyway.

Maybe they just feel like flapping their wings?
Why are we so quick to judge their behaviors?

I can just imagine couple mutas floating around.
Some other muta says "dude, why are you flapping your wings in space man, there's no point."
Our muta shrugs, he's like "haters gonna hate." and flaps off on his way.
|
They can fly because they project an extremely strong magnetic field under them, which makes them impassable by "mortal means"
...no wait

For something moving at that speed? Seems very unlikely

That's kinda irrelevant. It's pretty simple science that something that is invisible (basically transparent) means that light goes through it, and doesn't get absorbed (if it did then the thing would be black). I guess you could bring in camoflauge, where the vehicle changes its color to be exactly like its outside environment, but that sounds ridiculously complex for a flying vehicle, even with sc2 technology.

Flapping your wings in space would be useless. I bet mutas just fart to propel themselves

as likely as psyonic energy and bugs flying through space and hybrid human/bugs and whatever the fuck else?
compared to these things, yes, it seems entirely possible

Maybe for something to be actually invisible you need it to pass through you, but for something to look invisible, you just need to make it look like the light is passing through you. For instance, by projecting the same image that you expect to see. That would also explain why you see a "ripple" in sc2 when it moves, the software isn't quite fast enough to keep up with a changing background, but can be pretty perfect when it's still.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_camouflage
Not only is it definitely possible with sc2 technology, it's even probably feasible in the foreseeable future for us. OLED's let you put flexible screens on all kinds of surfaces, and then you basically need a set of cameras and a lot of software to interpret and project the images. They've already done similar tests using mounted projectors, which are obviously less reliable, but they are some pretty cool tests (google invisibility cloak).
