So I'm going to get a new computer, and I've resolved to not install iTunes on it, because it sucks.
Now, I have the issue of actually getting some of my songs onto whatever new iTunes-alternative I choose. Some of my songs are mp3 files, but the rest are all DRM-locked iTunes AAC format, and IT'S STUPID.
What's the best way to deal with this? I doubt there are any legal ways to remove the DRM-lock, huh?
This is all just "me from 4 years ago" giving "current me" the finger. ><

re-Record it? There are programs out there that record the exact music that's coming out of your speaker, internally (without having to resort to microphone shenanigans)

you could install itunes...

Audacity can do this. It's open source freeware.

Dont bother
Download Switch Sound file converter, set it to out-put whatever format the files are in, then convert them...it removes the DRM.
Edit: why do you hate Itunes so much...sure its fat...do you have a really bad computer?

Why does everyone say iTunes is such bloatware? I use it, and when I tried Songbird, it took up 5x more memory then iTunes.
Also use this... Memory Fox
It shrunk my iTunes memory usage from ~32k to about ~5k.

It is definitely still a larger memory user than foobar or winamp... don't know about songbird. Still, I don't get the hate, its still only using a tiny amount and I really prefer its organization and GUI.

Yeah, I didn't really have any information for comparison against foobar and winamp, just songbird. Apparently the memory difference is there between foobar and itunes, but nothing monumental.
I use itunes because I have an ipod and itunes does have a clean interface that allows me to LISTEN TO MUSIC so it's fine for me. I'm not really the kind of person that needs my music player to do everything and then make me nachos when I'm done, I just need it to simply play music while I'm browsing/gaming.

its ridiculously fat compared to foobar. its installation file is almost 100 mb which is just LOL. and not to mention every time you want to update you have to download the whole thing again.

yeah, it entirely filled up my 100mb hard drive...now I have to buy another one.

Remember OP, if you convert from aac/m4a to .mp3, you're going to be losing some sound quality because you're going from a lossy format to another lossy format.
Oh, and here's a link to foobar + its iPod plugin: http://www.foobar2000.org/ + http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_dop
I don't see how you can say iTunes is simpler or cleaner, considering foobar can be customized to show either every single detail about your music or just keep it totally minimal. Once you get that little iPod plugin, it can practically do everything iTunes can and even more with a smaller amount of memory usage.

Sorry, when I'm listening to music on my computer I'm generally not staring at the music player, I'm staring at a browser or something a bit more interesting.
Also I don't really care to know who the composer of a song is when I'm playing it (which iTunes can do btw). iTunes isn't really very customizable, but I bet there's more to it then you think.

In that case, then Foobar taxes your system less.
