My parents have asked me to help them buy a digital TV. I know very little about TVs in general and would appreciate any advice on where I could start researching brands / types etc. They are looking to spend ~$1000 but I'm guessing there is a price margin if I could find a good deal.

Any tips or advice?

my opinion is probably not qualified but i did some research on the topic when i wanted to get a 37 inch-er for about 600-700€ and these are the two TVs i really considered buying:

LG 37LH5000 / 42LH5000

or

the 6-series from samsung. Samsung LE37B650 / LE42B650

They both have what's considered standard nowadays + they can play almost anything directly from an external HDD. (MKVs etc are no problem)

A friend got himself the 42LH5000 (42LH5020 actually, which just has a different framing) and the picture is just amazing, even 720p MKVs from HDD look awesome. i have never witnessed any lag or any problem at all and i consider buying one for myself in the near future.

Good timing. I need a tv too since I'm moving out and don't have any tv's to bring with me. I'm gonna have a pretty small living room so I don't need a huge tv.

Maybe 32 inch? I am not sure exactly how much I am willing to spend. From my little research I did on Consumer Reports I learned that plasma doesn't come that small so I'd probably go with lcd. Not 100% sure if I should spend for the 1080p or save with 720p or what. Since I have a ps3 and the difference in price between 1080 and 720 isn't that big anymore maybe I should just spend.

With these requirements how inexpensive can I get if I catch the right sale? Where would I get a good sale?

To me, TV size depends on how big your room is. I'm usually sitting about 3-4 meters away from a 32" TV, which seems pretty optimal. At that distance 40" seems too big for me.
About quality... I have no clue. They're all pretty good by now. I always buy Samsung though, as I never had any problems with their product.

*Edit:
Who am I kidding... Stork is on Samsung Khan = I love Samsung.

The gaps and differences between plasmas and LCD's are getting smaller and smaller as time goes on. It used to be...

Plasma for size of TV, Image depth is usually better. Zero to no picture blur/lag. But they're heavy as hell, and if you leave a stationary image up for too long you'll start to get a burn-in and that's hard to get rid of. I don't usually see that on residential TV's but commercially you get that alot. Like the CNN news ticker will burn in because they have news running all day.

LCDs were lighter, a little behind plasmas in terms of picture depth (plasmas have darker, blacker blacks, colors are more vibrant), and they are generally BRIGHTER so that if you're watching TV during the daytime with lots of lights on, you can see the image better. They have become a LOT better but if you're into anything with lots of motion and whatnot, like sports, unless you can afford a 120hz you should think about a plasma.

Some people don't notice the motion blur. People's eyes see things differently. So it might be worth finding some stores with the TVs you're interested in and watching them. Yeah, usually stores fuck with the settings in the TV menus to make it look "better" so take it with a grain of salt.

Micro, for a 32", hit up Samsung's LCDs. All starcraft fan-dom aside, those little baby Samsung TVs are super kickass. We sell a TON of them and (imo) Samsung has the best LCD picture quality. Followed by LG, Panasonic, the the Sharp Aquos line. If you pick up that 32" Samsung, I'm pretty sure it's native resolution is 1080p anyway, but the price difference in 720p and 1080p isn't huge and worth not having 1080p.

@The LCD > Plasma post... it really depends on the situation. Plasmas have a situational use over LCD's, but LCD's are in general better in more areas than a plasma.

Quality > Size

Also LED just means LED backlighting that just make shit thinner and more expensive it's not a true led tv don't bother for slightly brighter/blueish backlighting.

Yenta, I literally just bought a 52" LCD TV for $835. I got an amazing deal with shipping and everything though - but look for a Sharp LC-52D85UR because its one of the highest ranked TVs on newegg and the quality is amazing. They were on sale 2 weeks ago so just shop around and see what you can find but I highly recommend it.

LCD != Quality
Plasma != Size.

Assuming that's what you were referring to. Either way, it's personal opinion. And I can respect that. I did want to say though, that the most amazing picture I have ever seen on any display, from the little 30" guys all the way up to the Panasonic 103" Plasma (oh god it's amazing..) was the Samsung 32" LED-LCD.

LED-LCD uses an LED back light instead of a Fluorescent back light on standard LCD's.

It weighed 7 pounds (with base!!) and was like...laptop screen thin. It was nuts. And the picture was BEAUTIFUL. The blacks are very dark, very deep. The colors are vibrant, they glow. We have a test DVD that Panasonic made. You show different kinds of motion, pictures, to test the contrast, sharpness, brightness, and so on. There's this one picture of like... 7 candles, all red and yellow colored. Lit, and in front of a black backdrop. It was the most mesmerizing thing I've ever seen on a TV. The candles seriously looked real. So LED is not just a cool fancy back light. That actually has a function on the picture reproduction side of things. Though I would wait for the technology to stop being new before considering an LED. CRAZY expensive.

429? Or was it 449? I dun remember.

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16889102221
This would be my favorite pick. I dunno what price Newegg has it at though.
