Hello!

This blog is supposed to help me summarize some of the research I necessarily face as a SC2 player without much RTS experience. It may contain obvious or incorrect statements, and I'd appreciate any remarks.

Here are some of the topics of my current interest, on which I may, or may not, spend the time to post:
+ Show Spoiler +
[*] Selection Order

[*] Fractional Health
(how much health does a BC have if the screen says it has 549HP? what about 1HP?)

[*] Brood Lord Attacks

[*] Smoothness vs Tempo
(when is it better to save resources and not spend them? when NOT to throw down the building you need "as soon as you have the resources"?)

[*] TvZ PF rush enhanced
(+2 armor upgrade makes PF's 5 armor 'invulnerable' to lings - they only cause the game minimum 0.5 damage)

[*] Static Defence Map Control

[*] Baneling Tricks
(vs DTs, vs sparse formations; what shapes of formations are safer from banelings?; building stats; drops)

[*] Quadratic Programming for fast BO optimization

[*] Creep Generators
(application: ZvZ abuse of enemy hatchery to support creep on its own cliff and crawler attack it without queens)

[*] Nondeterminism in SC2

[*] Walling as Zerg
(hatchery, crawlers, evo, early roaches, defensive zerg strats, nydus, drops)

[*] Mass Carriers

[*] Creep Management in Non-ZZ Teams
(how not to creep your teammate/s/ space, but still advance)

[*] Magic Box sizes in SC2

[*] Mining Distance Efficiency
(comparison between the mining efficiency for different distances and number of workers on the same patch)

[*] Useful SC2 Links

So you're gonna keep updating with your findings? Sounds pretty neat. I'll definitely be following.

Thanks, but don't expect well maintained blog. It's essentially on the edge with recycle bin or scratch notes. (I hope they allow such low level of quality for blogs, if not, i'll move it elsewhere)

I like the implications.
Terran/Microsoft - clunky, immobile,
Protoss/Apple - overpriced, noobish
Zerg/Linux - pro, unstoppable

This ball spins three different ways.

Um, that wasn't planned to be exactly a banner, just some random pic I made. It could become a banner though, if someone wants it for that - feel free to use it. Thanks again for the nice comments.

The point wasn't to offend any race. I like to play with each and appreciate their differences. Note that these 3 companies/organizations are just representative of specific styles, but one could achieve almost anything with each approach.

Also, I'd hesitate to call Apple noobish, considering some of their highly expert-oriented products, especially in arts and design. Among similarities with toss are: less is more, do it once - do it right, clean artistic designs, difficult to repair, glass and lights, fragile appearance, flexible but apple-specific energy docks (pylons) etc.

Has anyone said exactly that btw, so where did you pull it from? As with the other 2, depends a lot on what you know about their history, which spans more than 3 decades. Apple isn't just ipod/ipad/iprank.

The more I think about that banner the more convinced I am that it's pure genius.

As stated by Starcraft lore:

Protoss - the "purity of form". Highly controlled environment, emphasis on a polished outlook. Strength comes from unity and secrecy, weakness from being cliquey. Very wary of outsiders.

Zerg - the "purity of essence". Emphasis on a free and open-minded environment, which enables evolution into any direction which is perceived as beneficial by any part of the swarm. Strength comes from diversity, weakness from divergence. Readily embrace outsiders as new genetic material to become stronger.

Now we just need the "Xel'Naga" to come finish their work and combine these two to finish the grand cycle and create a new "master race". Which would then devour the "Terrans" from the face of the galaxy.

Microsoft - Terran: Strongest, Richest, Most loved.

Apple - Protoss: Fancy look, high quality though kinda overpriced.

Linux - Zerg: Cheap pos.

You can wall off fairly small ramps with Queen's seen in some videos.

Thank you for these quotes! James Phinney is credited as co-creator of the Starcraft universe, and he has worked first as a programmer, so he should have been aware of the different major IT styles. Background usually influences the creative process of authors. Just saying.

Agreed, but Zerg should be able to block early off-creep natural chokes and large ramps, to match Terran and Protoss in this mastery - and they can! - if they consider that an early "wall combat hatchery" costs just a drone above 2 barracks / 2 gateways; blocks about the same space; and with injection produces units at about the same rate. This also allows easier deviation from the melee traditions of the race, and more towards ranged early army compositions. Could add variety to 2v2-4v4 too, away from the popular "zerg rush".

Seems to go against the race design, I know. I just like race customizations, and think they could be rewarding.

Fixed it for ya

Also, I can't wait for the updates to the OP! GL and HF researching!

They're not exact quotes per se, just me summarizing my best understanding of what is meant when the lore talks about purify of form and essence and the principles of the protoss and zerg Still, they match pretty darn well from both sides...
