Hey guys. I've never really done this before..and I don't really know of any you personally nor am I really a part of this community or any for that matter but I just feel compelled to talk about it on here.

My situation is pretty terrible. I'm 21, jobless, no experience and no schooling past high school. My mom was laid off work from drug abuse and my fathers been retired for a long time. We're bleeding money fast and there aren't really any ways out. My mom is incapable of working, as well as my father beyond maybe a McDonalds job..and I can't find any. Even if I did, it wouldn't really be enough anyway. So..I'm left with just one option: The Army.

It pretty much scares me to death for a variety of reasons but..shits getting real now. Eventually some bad stuffs going to happen, and I just have to do this. We need the money, I need some sort of future..it all makes perfect sense and I have to force myself to go.

So tomorrows the big day..no matter what I'm going down to that recruitment office and its life changing time. Wish me luck guys, even just saying that will give me some strength to do this.

Don't lose hope, in a world that looks like it's going to turn upside down there's always an opportunity to turn it around my friend

You make me feel so lucky and contented with my life the way you wrote this blog. I wish you luck and please stay in one piece ayt?
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

Is there no other way for you to make money in the meantime while thinking long term later? I mean, army seems to be the default last-resort choice but is there not any hope of falling in with a trade or something?

I'm just thinking your family's situation won't be greatly improved by your dying in the desert on a lie.

But I suppose you answered all of that when you said that you can't find any work. I feel for you and I hope everything works out for both you and your family. Good luck.

Good luck and remember to be true to who you are. A lot of people come back changed from the army and for the worse.

EDIT: Have you thought about the JobCorps?

it's not as scary as it sounds. Half of the people i know went to military and not one of them regrets going there, not even the combat vets. That's a much better statistic then college graduates, about 100% of whom i know regret choosing the major they chose.

It's rough yea, but its a good choice. Try to do well on the tests though, so you can get an office job instead of the infantry.

Good luck man. What you're about to jump into definitely won't be easy, may or may not be just, and may not even ensure you or your family's survival. But it is the most brave and admirable type of man who would rather seize the slimmest opportunity to mold his own future than resign himself to a bleak fate. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Wishing good luck seems strange to me, since it is wishing that you get to kill others faster than they kill you/support others to kill others faster than they are killed. I'd personally rather beg homeless in poverty than go to military.
I guess I will wish you that all wars end soon then.

Always find it strange/sad that people think the military is this scary, last-resort option...I got medically disqualified from college ROTC after pneumonia fucked up my asthma beyond all hope of salvation.

You'll find that the Army is a good place. Boot camp will suck, sure, but the sense of accomplishment of finishing something hard and difficult will make you proud of what you've done and a better person to boot. You'll be around like-minded individuals (or, in your case, you'll BECOME a like-minded individual xD) and that pays off.

If you aren't going career, the most important thing, above all else, is to make sure you USE the benefits it gives you. Shop on-base for one, things are waaay cheaper there, which will help your family out. Use the billion and half options available to you to get college education while you're in, don't do stupid shit, and give it your all.

Really, don't think of this as some desperate, last ditch effort to make a decent life. Think of it as an opportunity to better yourself, help your family, make lifelong friends, and bank a decent amount of money. You won't get rich in the Army, but if you live on-base, bank your pay, and don't waste it all on women and drinks every payday, you'll come out alright.

Military is a very viable career nowadays, contrary to what a lot of people tend to think...if you go career, put in your twenty years, you retire with amazing benefits and pay, veteran benefits for children, etc. Not to mention twenty years in the service opens a ton of doors in the private sector for security jobs and a host of other things.

The scary part is being killed, not that you will regret it.

Yo, why the army?
Why not the air force, coast guard, navy, or national guard?

I am going in service too, because it is also like my only good option. But I chose air force because I think it will have best career opportunities for me, and in air force I won't have to do any fighting - I don't want to be too involved in causing deaths.

Damn. Best of luck, I'm glad you have the option of signing up. One of my closest friends was in a similar situation but didn't even have the army option, since he ...didn't have his green card yet.

Something about the 5% (2000/50000 U.S. deaths/total) casualty rate bothers a lot of people.

As i insinuated in the latter portion of the post, if you do well on the tests its most likely you will never see combat in your life.
