My blog on computer crashing

Yesterday when I was just listening to music my computer crashed. A high-pitched noise emitted from my headphones continuously and my computer froze. I turn the computer off with the on/off switch from the power supply and just let it sit there for some hours while I read a book.

Now when I try to boot up my computer will repeatedly restart by itself during the windows loading screen (black background, windows logo in middle and a progress bar underneath it). For a moment I can see a blue screen with white letters, but it doesn't stay for long as my computer just restarts (lasts about .1-3 seconds).

I tried to boot in safe mode and it indicated that I have XP with service pack 2, but I have no idea why it would boot in safe mode and what I do in it.

Please help :x I have never had a crash that didn't fix on it's own (lol). Any help is appreciated.

Afaik my hard drive is fat32.

Are you able to continuously reach windows Via Safe Mode?

If so I need you to command -> Run

And type "chkdsk" and see what happens. If it's a very apparent issue with a HDD it will show up as an error from here. Otherwise we will continue to take further steps to diagnose the problem.

I was able to reach safe mode without failure.

However, computer got fixed. It no longer is having the problem, and the problem and the spontaneous recovery didn't happen before.

What do I do now? Still run "chkdsk"?
Stuck.

Hi, so my problem I'm looking for help with is my laptop overheating. The model is Dell XPS M1530, it's about 2 years old. Relevant hardware information I think:

I've been happy playing stuff on my 6 year old P4 desktop but it can't handle big 3v3 battles or normal 4v4 battles or some customs of sc2 even on the lowest everything settings so I've been migrating my gaming over to this computer.

It is getting super hot though, I've been running SpeedFan and glancing at it quickly after alt-tabs every once in a while. Doing anything that requires graphics gets the core0 and core1 and CPU temperatures reading about ~80 degrees C, with the GPU also around 80 as well (which seems not as bad?). And this with one of those fan pads underneath it that gives it air and space. If I sit it directly on a surface and run sc2 or quake live it will turn itself off after a bit, I assume because it passes a temperature threshold. Even just watching a recent Day9 daily at full screen was giving me temperatures near 80 C. Real Temp (since I wanted more data) is giving even higher numbers (with 1 game minimized and firefox open it said 83 C, 67 C on the GPU.

I've taken the back off and sprayed air everywhere around the vents and fan and just everywhere I could. I can't seem to undo 3 of the 6 screws holding the heatsink and fan in place with my available screwdrivers so I can't get inside the fan apparatus really. Is this something that would help?

Any ideas?

Is the laptop still under warranty? Yes, very relevant.

Well than at this point I would consider just opening the sucker up and trying to remove the dust, tighten the screws on the heat pipe that goes through the laptop. It's really your best bet for cooling, naturally a cooling pad will help as well.

Aside from these tricks in the case of laptop overheating, without having it in front of me it would be difficult to diagnose.

Do you know how to properly open up a laptop?

Ok my computer crashed again, and I ran chkdsk.

It verified Usn Journal then did something quick and program terminated itself.

Also both times the computer crashed, I applied a slight pressure to my headphone cord which was tense. This time, instead of computer freezing right away, it made a series of noise repeatedly (through headphones), and I shut down with updates, and it froze with "Computer will turn off itself..." message.

Here are my specs

c2d E6750
nVidea gforce 8800GTS 640mb
2gig ram corsair (2x1)
540 Corsair ps
Gigabyte G35 mobo
and some fatality soundcard from Creative.

Just to comment, I also have an m1530 and as far as I know it just runs that hot. Mine cpu/gpu idle at ~60C and shuts itself off playing demanding games or even decoding 1080p video if I don't keep it well ventilated, so I don't really think it's really a problem you can solve.

I agree that this isn't a special case with the m1530, but cleaning out the laptop properly could do wonders to lower the temp, maybe lower the average run speed period + lower gaming core temp.

Also the cooling mats do tend to work decently well.

Strange self termination through dos -> chkdsk.. hmm...

Computer freezing at integral areas where data being written to hard drive as well...

If you have a spare hard drive, I suggest you give it a shot. If you're in new jersey, I'll lend you one of my spares (though it's an off chance.)

If you need help on instructions on replacing a hard drive properly let me know. Typically I would volunteer on writing one up, but it's 3AM here and I've worked for nearly 13 hours today. Let me know if you need instructions on how to replace, and how to identify Sata to IDE and etc. No big deal, I'm just about to pass out.

Edit: I just saw your location, I am going to presume you are not near me. lol.

I'm in Georgia.

Also it turns out my HD is NTFS, or at least one of them. I have two. Is there a way to 'switch' them?

Not without formatting them. Have you tried using the other hard drive to install your OS on and attempting to use it?

This is a quick and easy way to determine if your current Master hard drive is a problem.

What's the problem when my computer won't turn on? I push the button, the computer turns on for half a second, then turns off. Then it's unresponsive for hours, after which it 'magically' turns on again. Is it a temperature issue?

Also is it normal for XP to be in SP2 in safe mode?

Have you tried using a different harddrive to boot the machine in?

SP2 in safemode, I'm unsure... are you positive you had sp3 installed previously?

I'm close to computer illuterate. I was reading on booting OS on different drive when crash happened.

About computer updates, I have a suspicion there. Almost every time would turn of my computer, it would say that 'updates are ready to intall whatever' with the turn off button. Even when I start the computer right away and turn it off again.

I'm fairly sure I had SP3 because I remember seeing XP SP3 on dxdiag when I used it to check specs, but I dunno. I'll check it again as soon as it turns on.

From here I guess I can just pop my XP disc in and install in my other hard drive right? But it says I have to back up.

Can I follow what the answer says?

Also can I back up in a dvd?
Stuck.

Yes, pop the CD in, boot from the CD. Those instructions are fairly accurate I'd say. See how far you get. I'm here all night so I'll be able to track your status and any questions.

Good luck.
