Well you would use a program such as daemon tools so it acts as it it is another CD drive, you seem to be having issues with the burned copies of the CD's, using an ISO directly mounted can fix your problem.

This small link could be of great assistance explaining a bit further.

http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/mount_watch_iso_files_page1.html

As far as your PM about Grid Networking, SichuanPanda seems like he might be a bit more knowledgable and helpful in that area than I could. Without a grid in front me I honestly couldn't help. Though aren't Grid Networks comparable to a supercomputer these days? I haven't used this jargon in quite some time, I apologize to any network savvy gentlemen or women who read this than promptly throw up in the bin next to them at the folly of my words.

Back to the ISO. Try mounting it with Daemon Tools, I believe lite is a free trial. See what happens when you run the mounted ISO. It should essentially auto-run as if you just put a CD in the tray (that has an auto run command file) and hopefully you can get past just clicking.

The auto-run just opens up all the files on the CD, whereas what's supposed to happen when you boot from the CD is you're going to be running in a Linux environment. So whenever I mount it with Daemon Tools, all I get is a folder with the files that are on the CD, not the environment itself.

Also, I PM'd SichuanPanda, but I was wondering if you had any experience with setting up clusters?

Well, technically I'm running 64-bit Vista, but I can also run 32-bit Ubuntu via a VM, so you're not entirely wrong

If I knew there wouldn't be a problem. But since I don't... I have to wonder as well. =)

1. Motorola Modem and Cisco router. Running on a Vista Home Premium 32 Bit.
2.Installed 2GIGs of RAM
3.No software changes that I can Think off

Problem: Started a few days ago my modem would all of a sudden lose all connection to the ISP and start blinking "Recieve" over and over then eventually to "Send" and back to "Online" and repeat the process like 10x over. It causing my to drop Starcraft games and become immensely frustrated overall.

Stuff I've tried to do.
1. First thing I eventually did was completely turn off the modem by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it in. (failed)
2. Went into my network and sharing center and click "Identify the problem" and fix automatically (worked till the next day)
3. Finally after it doing it again, i disconnected my router and plugged in my modem with a direct connection figuring it was the router causing this.
4. It continued to happen just like 20 minutes ago and now I'm fresh out of ideas and the my last option is to call my ISP which out of pride i refuse to do till I literally can't figure it out.

Can you feel the rush?

Hey there, great post. WTB more of this in this thread for sure.

When it's doing that pattern with the modem, what you need to do is the following:

1) When you turn off the modem, leave it for more than just 10 seconds, 10 seconds of data transfer will likely still hook you to the same IP and data gateway that you had before. I suggest Unplugging it, go get something to eat during lunch or whatnot, and replugging it when you get back. That will clear the cache in the modem and from the connection. I would unplug the router too while you're at it, and see what happens next.

2) If the problem persists, you should call the ISP and ask them to check your line. There's no shame in calling your ISP when you are paying for a service they are not properly providing.

3) You stated that the problem persisted past you removing the router from the equation completely, this further leads me to believe you are experiencing a problem that SHOULD be resolved directly by your ISP.

There's no reason to be ashamed to call your ISP, as I said. It's their job to make sure the service they are providing is working properly, but I do understand your thoughts and concerns regarding the matter.

After contacting them, please let me know the result and what they had to say. If they do a quick reboot and it appears to be working, ask to have a field technician sent to your house anyway. They will likely claim that if there is no problem you will be charged. If they stand firm on this, when the field technician arrives, tell him your problem, and that you would like to receive a new cable modem.

He has an easy job task that burns time on his workday.
You can ultimately eliminate the cable modem from the possibility of problems.
It's free..... depending on your ISP (Check first.. I don't want to receive a PM of a photobucket of a bill that is asking for my address.

Good luck.

Edit: For future reference, unless you are experiencing other problems, your ISP connectivity and an installation of RAM is a very long shot of a linking issue. I always appreciate people linking ALL the changes that are made, of course. But be mindful, if it was a RAM issue, you would see a much more precise and complex error in your computer than your ISP dropping.

Another bit of knowledge:

When you change from using a router, to not using a router, it is proper to restart the cable modem itself when you change mediums of connectivity, or else your results will become erroneous.

Hey Saracen, I apologize but I still haven't come up with a configuration that will ultimately fix your problem.

I have a suggestion though.

This may seem like a long shot, but I haven't suggested it and I will now, I want you to boot up into Vista and run Virtual Machine Windows XP.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Inside this virtual machine environment attempt to read the CD. My father has had successful results in situations like this in fixing problems such as unreadable data under different OS circumstances, let's give this a shot and see what happens.

P.s. - If this works I accept minor praise, gift cards to the local shoppes, also/or 1v1 practice if you are an sc2 player.

It's worth a try for sure, let me know the results.

Best of luck.

Thanks, I'll try it out when I get home. I really appreciate the amount of time you've spent trying to help me. I'm trying to become a little less computer illiterate now. I'm trying to get comfortable with Linux, starting two days ago, and now I can write some simple shell scripts. It's a long way from setting up and running an actual local area network/server, though, which is my eventual goal. I think my professor wants to have XGrid running on all the lab computers, which kind of sucks because I have exactly zero experience with MACs.

Also, if I still can't get the CD to work, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Since I actually sort of know how to use Linux now, I can probably just copy all of their programs and run them normally (before, I thought the CD environment came with extra tools, but now I'm thinking that's not the case...)

And I'll practice with you whenever you want. PM me for my info once beta gets back up. I was a 2000+ Zerg player when they did the ELOs in that format. I hope I kept my praise minor enough for you.

hello, i have a problem that you might be able to help me with. i've got a 1TB freeagent external harddrive that is malfunctioning. initially i was intending to transfer some stuff to another 1TB external harddrive. i had them both plugged in, and they both worked fine then. copy pasted a movie over, and half way during the copy paste process, there's some error (unable to detect something). the copy paste stops, i try running the movie, it runs. then i go to the washroom, my neighbour takes over, and i think he tries to copy paste again. same error, this time, when i try to open the movie, it says i need a codec (get the same issue on corrupted files).

now, when i plug in the harddrive, it either doesn't detect in my computer, says its malfunctioning, or appears as a "local drive" that is empty. i've tried restarting my com and restarting the harddrive. initially it wouldn't detect. after restarting the harddrive, it now shows as empty local drive. empty in the sense that it doesn't even tell me how much free space and stuff there is.

i know all that data is probably gone, but it'd be nice if i could recover it. of course, if that's not possible, i'd like to reformat the harddrive or something so i can use it again. thanks for your help.

Hello Pangshai (wow all the TL writers in here,)

A few questions:

1) What's exactly up here? You share(d) this hard drive locally? Through network?
2) Have you ever tried copying lower amounts of data? Sometimes I find if the two hard drives have different RPM, they can 'clog'/error on transferring on large amounts of files.
3) Have you tried plugging in this External Disk Drive into a different computer? (I suppose the answer to Question 1 kind of covers this, depending on the answer.)
4) Can you give me a screen shot of what the disk drive says when you right click it and go to properties under it's current state?
5) When you restarted that hard drive, did you safely remove it before pressing the power button? (I am hoping you did!)

After this is answered I can supply some more options, ideas, rambling.

Best of luck.

2k Zerg? Did I say practice? I meant.. training. O_O. Monster.

And don't worry, there's a lot of different expertise when it comes to computers these days, you are ahead of a lot of people I know already (Including myself on the Linux platform, for sure,) and if you are able to comprehend that book, you're looking pretty good imho.

1) What's exactly up here? You share(d) this hard drive locally? Through network?

both harddrives were plugged into my laptop via USB

2) Have you ever tried copying lower amounts of data? Sometimes I find if the two hard drives have different RPM, they can 'clog'/error on transferring on large amounts of files.

harddrives are the same model/build/company/brand. i've tried copying between 2 harddrives in the past, and it's worked out. not these exact same two though.

3) Have you tried plugging in this External Disk Drive into a different computer? (I suppose the answer to Question 1 kind of covers this, depending on the answer.)

no. i don't have access to another computer atm. but i can try tomorrow morning.

4) Can you give me a screen shot of what the disk drive says when you right click it and go to properties under it's current state?

5) When you restarted that hard drive, did you safely remove it before pressing the power button? (I am hoping you did!)

i tried to safely remove, but it refused to safely remove even though there wasn't anything running it. it happens quite often, and i can never figure out why. i wasn't going to shutdown my computer to unplug the harddrive, so i just unplugged it.

If you can try tomorrow morning, I suggest giving plugging the computer into a different computer a try. What worries me is in that screen shot, the hard drive is registering as having 0 bytes of 0 bytes full, and on top of that, the system file is blank. So it's like the computer is recognizing that you are inserting a blank wafer into it with nothing on it and no capability.

What kind of Laptop is this? I am curious of the capabilities of recognizing a USB component through the BIOS or boot options.

Also, I know this is insane, have you tried using a different USB plug on the laptop and restarting the computer? Stranger issues have been solved this way...
