I've got a scheduled trip to Japan during june-july, and as many tourists we plan to visit some of the many magnificent temples that Japan have to offer. We're only planning to visit the southern part of the island, and have booked two hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo respectively.
One of my travelbuddies however have recently been in contact with another friend of his that have just visited Japan and some of the places we plan to visit. According to him, almost all the temples in the Kyoto area, and perhaps many others around the country, are being restored at the moment, making them cover up the temples with huge white sheets. Apparantly a poster hang up saying something like they are planned to be restored for most of 2010.
This could ofcourse be a bit annoying to us tourists, as we concider them a great part of our trip. I would like to know if anybody here knows how long they plan to restore the temples, and wether or not the Kyoto temples are the only ones affected.
Thanks for all information!

Didn't really see anything on the net while looking online, like nothing planned in advance?
For example, the Kyoto tourist site - http://kyoto.wakasa.jp/index.php
has a list of temples http://kyoto.wakasa.jp/list/25/
which also links to some of the temples' websites, and I looked through ~5 of them, like http://www.mitera.org/
and none of them mentioned anything about "restoration." Or anything, really, except for events that're planned, for some of them.
Unfortunately my family lives in Aichiken and my friend living there is in Tokyo so I can't really ask about Kyoto, but when I get home, if I can catch my friend I can ask him if the temples he might walk by in Tokyo are covered up, if you want?

Hope they stop murdering whales though

I wouldn't worry to much, Japanese are very efficient and probably wont take to much time to "restore" it.
you should go to Ghibli museum if the temples are closed

Alright, don't think I will worry too much about this then, thanks for the feedback. Still in any case, if anybody suddenly got any additional information, please don't hesitate with responding!

If that's not too much trouble I'd really appreciate it! Also thank you for links to the temple websites, didn't even know they existed.

When I was in Kyoto, Gingakuji and Kyotogyoen were being restored, so I didn't get to see them. This also happened with the inside of Okayama-jo when I was in Okayama.
I think it's rather common for these buildings to undergo renovation as they are extremely old and fragile (since their reconstruction), and Japan really treasures their temples as part of their heritage. Once you arrive (by train presumably), there should be tourist kiosks in the Kyoto stations (beautiful station btw), ask there, and they'll be able to tell you where to go.
