Just my oppinions

Okay guys, so Starcraft 2 is coming out and big gaming orgs are finally looking at SC/SC2. This is a good thing but there has to be some hesitation. A lot of these companies, MLG in particular) have a lot of restrictive rules or contracts to play in their events. One is the WORLDWIDE, unlimited, and infinite rights to your likeness, name, voice to MLG for attending an event. Another is that they control sponsors at events. So if you're Team EG pimping all these companies, it might be pretty hard. You pretty much switch to relying on MLG for everything instead of having own sponsors etc. This means MLG basically has a monopoly on your future contracts (no sponsor is gonna sign you if MLG has the rights to using you in any advertisements, commercials etc and at any event you can't pimp them.

So basically having a group like MLG is definitely not a bad thing but seriously, for the LONG TERM, the best thing to do is try to collective bargain with all top USA/CA players and try to get some of these rules changed. For instance a NASCU (north american SC union) or somesuch. Maybe even talk to Blizzard collectively about broadcast rights and contracts etc. For longterm its way better to have individually sponsored teams. Instead of the small top minority sponsored by MLG and the rest fucked. So yeah if for some reason MLG does lead SC2 broadcasts/gaming.. really for your best longterm interests (SC2 gonna be around 10 years) work on getting better rules/contracts. Especially in the beginning when they will have more competition and have to make a name for themselves in SC2.

Don't just sign/join a lucrative short term org and get fucked/struggle for the next 10

MLG sponsored halo as "the greatest fps of all time".

I want nothing to do with them, ever.
We have multiple brackets generated in advance. Relax . (Kennigit) I just simply do not understand how it can be the time to play can be 22nd at 9:30 pm PST / midnight the 23rd at the same time. (GGzerg)

Kespa is pretty shitty too

THe best thing for players though is individually sponsored teams (not owned), in a MLG dominated system, pretty hard to have team sponsors when you cant be named after a company, and can't pimp them out at events.

TSL is basically the best example of a great tournament/event for players. Big Prize Pool, no crazy sign your soul away contracts, and extremely well ran by die hards.

But the $$ MLG etc can throw at it is much higher right away. No reason not to get some, but if possible try and bargain... AKA make a huge thread on TL and get all the best players together to try and get more favorable rules.

I'd rather have an american-kespa than not have any league at all.

Ya well I bet you would eat shit rather than die assuming there's nothing else too.

Doesn't make MLG any better candidate to run the NA SC scene though, players need to make it clear that StarCraft players aren't as controllable as Halo players and they wont submit to nonsense.

Good enough reason for me too, damn greatest fps of all time? I can name 10 off the top of my head that are better without even thinking, and many of them predate Halo.

You're right guys, because sponsoring a league isn't a financial investment at all or anything. The quality of the game in question means nothing, it's a popularity contest that has to be spectator-friendly, that's the reality. Thread full of misconceptions inc.

Pusou, tell that to KESPA, or do you think progaming in Korea is glorious too? Lol at "submit to nonsense", I guess all Korean progamers will lead a glorious revolution some time in the near future then.

To put it another way, which ever league that has the money backing it up is where players will go, it's really that simple.

?

seems like there's a lot of misinformation about how mlg works in this thread

when you are signing those contracts about unlimited use of your likeness all it's really used for is permission to plaster you on their frontpage when you win the tournament. the main reason their contracts are so dense is because so many minors show up and dealing with that makes anything more complex legally. they are videotaping anything and they're just taking the extra legal effort to ensure that they don't get hit with some completely off-base privacy lawsuit when someone's mommy sees their picture in an article on the ever-so-scary internets and wants it taken down.

please explain to me how mlg has tried to strong-arm their players. there blatantly aren't any other high profile tournaments in america these days. they've set the tournament up in a way that it's completely unprofitable for europeans to compete, yes, but it's because they want to keep the league regional. most of the other leagues a few years back bled to death from booking way too many international flights for only 16 players to show up. kespa kept their organization on a strictly national level and it's definitely one of the reasons that they've been so successful.

MLG's pretty big, but when it took on the Melee scene the approach it took was way different than it took with Halo - mainly because the Melee scene had existed for so long independently of any sort of outside sponsorship. They put a lot of time and money into courting the Smash community and went to great efforts to make sure people were satisfied.

If this was 2005, I'd say a similar thing would happen - but a lot has changed, with its sponsorship/income having ridiculously grown since then. I'd like to hope that MLG will go to the same efforts in trying to court the SC community in their efforts to SC2, but it's hard to say what'll happen because everyone else is investing into pro-SC2.

might be a long shot, but if MLG is willing to work with the SC community and get, say, tasteless/artosis/chill or something on board to help them out it would be amazing.

Ive always considered MLG as a console game popularity contest. Nobody will be interested, better off keeping it to what has been established now and the Korean scene.

Either the SC community starts its own organization, we emulate the Korean scene, or Blizzard directly gets involved in organizing SC II esports to a massive scale.

Getting involved with MLG would be a disaster. The concept of organized e-sports in the US by these organizations is pretty terrible.

I think blizzard is going to be involved hosting a few big tournaments to try to get other companies to sponsor big events which would lead to teams being formed and such. This is a best case senario though, and I'm sure blizz is keeping a close eye on things like the MLG

Why would anyone want to work mandatory 14 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, barracks style....

I can tell you for a fact, MLG treats their players a million times better than any Korean is treated in the SC scene.

I hope MLG picks it up. They run their tournaments very well, and have exposure on ESPN. Win-win. Only a fool wouldn't want MLG to pick up SCII. Name one other North American entity that can pick up SCII?

Besides, MLG all ready has corporate sponsors.

One big thing your forgetting, MLG paid Final Boss 1 millions dollars for those rights for 3 years. Well worth it imo!! Also, how can anyone say kespa is better than mlg?? At least mlg doesn't turn their players into slaves! How many horror stories have you heard about treatment of Korean pro's ? Forced to wear Space armor, make-up, stopped from visiting girlfriends and family, forced to play 12 hours a day, forced to live in their practice house (total control environment) and how many other rules are imposed on the players? Kespa = communist
MLG is also has the highest payouts for progamers in the world! And lots of events, Some of those teams career winnings is insane (The ogre twins and walshy are all past the 2 million dollar mark!) Plus players are not required to practice, dress in a certain way, or even show up! If you want to skip an event you are free to do so. They appear on espn there games used to be televised on usa network. Whatever few negatives you find for MLG picking up Starcraft is grossly outweighed by the benefits to the Starcraft community, pro players, and International competition. I would love to see nony make enough money to pursue Starcraft full time and take down the Koreans. North America or Europe #1 in the world at starcraft has such a nice ring to it
The arguments against it here seem biased, made up, or simply huh huh mlg sucks lol. Look at the big picture you small minded fools

ok, if blizz wants kespa to pay them for sc2 there is no way that mlg will get sc2 withouit heavy blizzard involvement.
