Hola Guys,
I got an interview with my local cinemas on Wednesday and i really want to nail it.
Having been interviewed by this same company before so I know what to expect and I really need help on this question.
Favorite Movies - The problem here is i never go to the movies and I'm a fan of older movies form like the 90's 80's but everyone tells me it's best to list off real recent stuff. Maybe recommend me some good movies that came out lately?
Also just general tips about how to be amazing at job interview would be appreciated.

to OP: go through the imdb, rotten tomatoes, and yahoo movie top movie listings and find which ones you can actually have a talk about. it will suck if you say YEAH DARK NIGHT and he turns out to be a batman enthusiast and drills you about how the comics books were different or w.e. good luck.

Keep eye contact, and try not to stutter, or come off as insecure. Confidence is key! As for movies, im sure there is no right or wrong answer, and you're just diving too deep into it. They just wanna know what type of movies you like.

Go with Avatar, District 9, 2012, and Inglorious Bastards.
Even if you don't like them, they are the popular movies from 2009 that I think your interviewer will know about.

I actually said titanic last time.. under the favorite genre movie question...

Hurt Locker. Actually, you should just see that. It's really solid.
I also liked Brothers Bloom last year, but it didn't see critical success.
EDIT: Did he ask if you liked Transformers 2 as a trick to see if you are mentally handicapped?

You could take it this way...
I like older movies...but some of the qualities I notice in newer movies that reflect what I like about the older movies are "reason xyz".

well the idea behind the question is its a movie theater they want you to be up to date on recent movies and big movie goer.. so that you could recommend movies to customers.
im sure if it was music store theyd ask me what kind of music i like and my favorite albums.

If you don't really watch movies, that can be a plus, because you're cool headed about everything and can offer an objective opinion.
Or you could look at it this way: You were never much of a guy who likes to watch other people do stuff, even if it's in movies, you like to make your own life happen. See? That communicates confidence and proactive personality.
You have a reason for the way you live, let them know why they need your approach.

My favourite movie is Searching for Bobby Fischer. Even though it is a bit of a niche movie with a small budget, I really like the message in the movie. Of course I've kept up to date watching similar movies of the same genre, but SfBF is still my favourite.
What's wrong with that answer? I don't understand your logic, like you're going to say some movie you haven't seen and he's going to ask you a question about it and then what the fuck are you going to do?

Ah. I should have made it more clear I don't intend to just say yeah i liked.. New Moon..?
I'm planning on going to see/rent two movies tomorrow to do my research. which is why I'm hoping for good recent movies

Turds like Twilight and its sequel milked money out of hordes of droning tween vampire fangirls, but I think a lot of us can agree that it sucks pretty hard. Then again, I'm not a 14 year old girl, so...
How long ago did the most recent Terminator movie come out? I thought it was pretty good.
How about the Star Trek movie? I personally didn't think it was THAT great, but it was decently entertaining.
OH. I recommend District 9. Not everyone agrees, but I think it was awesome. It was pretty creative as far as I'm concerned.
I don't watch a lot of movies, but those are just a few recent ones I can remember.

I think a big thing will be showing them that you are good at being articulate and smart, like not going OMG AVATAR WAS THE BEST THING EVER STUNNING GRAPHICS!!!!!! As long as you explain yourself and show you have seen recent movies then you should be ok

I'm sorry but you are out of your mind if you think someone will not hire you based on your favorite movies. If this manager or whatever is really deciding based on that, then he/she is probably batshit insane anyway and you don't want to work for them.
Just being articulate and confident should be more than enough for you. Also, if you can get away with it, lie like a mattress.

BATMAN. It's a good movie, really.
I hear 'Armored' is a good one as well. Gonna watch it tomorrow =)

Dress nicely, make plenty of eye contact... when they hold out their hand to shake you have to look them in the eye... i had an interviewer tell me whether or not somebody looks them in the eye when they shake is the most important part of the process... first impressions are huge.

First of all. Don't say that 80's/90's movies are old. Nosferatu and Battleship Potemkin are old. If you want to sound cool say you like Ingmar Bergman. Tell them Berlin Alexanderplatz or Decalogue are the best miniseries on television ever and that The Magnificent Ambersons is technically better than Citizen Kane.
HOWEVER, if you want to impress people with how well you know modern films say that Avatar is the most impressive looking films ever but you found it's plot to be a thin retread of Dances with Wolves (or the last samurai or any of those kind of movies) and you felt it dragged in the third act hardcore.
Watch 500 days of summer. Its the best movie I've seen in a couple of years I think. It's a retread of Annie Hall, but it's done super well. Juno was awesome, but I guess that's kind of old now.
Talk about Pixar if you get the chance. Just the most amazing string of films, 10 in a row or something. Up is awesome.

Just put that most of the movies that come out these days can't compare to the classics and even the films of the 80s/90s. Then proceed to name off your favorites. Then close with something like; "But, if I had to pick some of the last 5 years: 1 , 2 ,3 "
Probably a good idea to pick a genre for each, so like action/batman dark knight, drama/slumdork millionaire, comedy/40 year old virgin.

Im not trying to get hired based on my favorite movies.. I'm simply drawing on past experience of knowing that last time my answer to this question wasn't what they expected wanted.

When I worked at a movie theater doing the stuff you mentioned, all we needed to know was how to smile towards customers and be able to do the shit you had to do(cleaning,selling stuff). IMO for a minimum wage job you're trying too hard unless you really badly want the job. And you can probably get it better by BSing about how good you are at working with other people than how much you like movies.

I dunno... I walked into a store... said I was looking for a job (was 16), and they asked me when I can start... can't blame me for thinking that was the norm. My next job didn't require an interview either... nor the next 3 after that. More recently they have required multiple interviews though :p

For a job like this just try and come across as fun yet responsible. Because it's a job that's hard to be incompetent at the biggest thing they will probably be looking at is can you handle money responsibly, and are you enjoyable to work with.
So in other words, throw a few jokes in.

i had alot of jobs growing up through highschool, all those minimum wage jobs like that(then again minimum wage here is like 12 dollars an hour now). Every single one required an interview. But alot of the time it's more like i dropped a resume off and the manager wanted to make sure i wasn't some freak of some kind that could not be presented to customers

best recent movie I watched has to be Star Trek. The Enterprise coming out of warp with all weapons firing is something that made the geek in me giggle like a schoolgirl.
or, if they ask you for a movie with a deep meaning, say Up. first few minutes of that movie's pretty deep.

im with micro on this, and im a new kid, i just show up looking for a job, provide some evidence i have basic cognitive abilities and im set.
one place required a resume, and a "interview" which was basically some under paid "manager" trying to feel important, so 5 minutes of being capable, making it clear i didn't want a managerial position ( TEK ER JAWB)
don't try to sound too intelligent, dress trendy, say how you thought avatar was cool throw in inglorious bastards for good measure, and you're set.
they aren't looking for Einstein they want someone who won't question the chain of command, will easily relate with clients, looks decent, and can make popcorn.
your intelligence you can put to use once you're hired.
seriously though what did they tell you when they didn't hire you the first time?

Check out the movie Trick'r'Treat, fairly new and has made a good splash in the horror genre. A classic 90s feel that everyone loves and a breath of fresh air in these times. More and more people have seen it lately and I think it's becoming popular. Also not a dumb gorefest that alienates everyone but the hardcore enthusasts, a good movie a blockbuster salesmen could push for its wide range enjoyability.

Micronesia, never take your perception of the universe as "normal" okay? im with micro on this, and im a new kid, i just show up looking for a job, provide some evidence i have basic cognitive abilities and im set. one place required a resume, and a "interview" which was basically some under paid "manager" trying to feel important, so 5 minutes of being capable, making it clear i didn't want a managerial position ( TEK ER JAWB) don't try to sound too intelligent, dress trendy, say how you thought avatar was cool throw in inglorious bastards for good measure, and you're set. they aren't looking for Einstein they want someone who won't question the chain of command, will easily relate with clients, looks decent, and can make popcorn. your intelligence you can put to use once you're hired. seriously though what did they tell you when they didn't hire you the first time?
They never actually flat out told me i wasn't hired I had to call and ask if the positions had been filled.

I'm going to go in the opposite direction from everyone else here and suggest that you not bring up movies you haven't actually seen. Next thing you know they'll start talking about one of them, or even worse ask you something about one of them, and suddenly you'll look like a liar.
