I've never played much Starcraft online. I got into Starcraft a couple months after the first TSL ended, torrenting the VODs and getting hooked instantly. I fucked around a little bit on battlenet and played a single game on iccup, where I played a ZvZ and got sunken rushed... That was the end of that!

I don't have much to do this week, so I'm going to try laddering in the TSL, using Protoss as my race. Anyone have any tips for a first time ladderer? Besides learning a build order?

Watch all of your replays after the match, going through specifics that you could of done better. It will help to get to know your opponents timings, mindful of your own macro and makes your next match much more straightforward.

Mentally prepare yourself on getting owned really, really badly. Don't get dis-encouraged if you loose horribly your first 100 games. ;o But remember, everyone started there and eventually got better. I think this is among the more important things to know as a new player. You don't start at top, you start at the bottom.

Other then that, it's the basic. Study, analyze replays, mass game. Mass game = experience = it's what makes the difference. (For me atleast.)

Dark templars are your friends.
Making games > joining games, because you'll never be able to get into one
If you see a terran all balled and sieged up, you can't take it on. Don't try.
If zergs are sniping your templar, be sure to morph them into archons, because they are going to die if you dont.

1. dont stop making probes. Ever. dont queue them
2. keep minerals low (spend on gates, pylons, etc)
3. if pvt, set your goal is to get a lot of goons, and some zealots depending on his tank count
4. if pvp, get goons, then obs, then reaver
5. if pvz, fast expo and then get corsair. When its out, send it to the other guy's main ignoring the overlords you see. Your goal is to see what the other guy is doing. If spire, get 2/3 cannons at main and nat, and make more sairs. if not, get gates gates gates zeals + ht mix and if yuou see lurker, get obs

Try your best to know what your opponant is doing and think strategically about what you need to do to counter their strategy. If you see an opening to attack take it. Know when to expand and when to mass up an army. Builds, mechanics and game sense all take time to get down but try to use all your game watching experience to know the game better and improve mentally. If you know what you should do at any given moment strategically then you will improve very quickly. Be smart and effecient in your actions.

macro and defense is EVERYTHING. ppl will try to rush you and then fail to build units afterward.

This.

I cant count the number of games at D+ I won after surviving a DT rush because he has hardly any units to defend with afterwards.

Yep, listen to the people that say macro. Make 15+ gates each game and you'll definitely be able to 1a2a3a over your opponents. That, and scout so you see their crazy stupid rush and can scout it. I would say scouting and macro are about equal on the D level.

One more thing that I would say is really important for improvement is to keep your army out and about the map. This helps several things: your multitasking, your minimap use, and your ability to understand map control.

at the d level

1. know how to make crazy and weird strats (double cheese combos, scout rushes, 1 base carriers, cannon pushes etc) make sure you know what you're doing and you understand the concepts and weaknesses of your strats.
2. know how to defend against your average cheese cause this will happen to you a lot
3. macro macro macro in the off chance that the game is standard LOL

i find that at d level this is what you essentially need and learn

if you are serious and want to progress into c and b territory, i think you should get some serious practice partners that will use builds that you want to practice against; d level games on iccup is definately not the best way to practice the standard play required at c and beyond

also strong and careful decisions >>> mechanics at d level

if you were a very knowledgeable and experienced player with 50 apm, you could prbly bash most noobs with up to 160 apm without much difficulty.

Learn a build order.

Also, scout, scout, scout.

And learn a build order.
