I was in a little arguement on iccup about whether terrans get the 3rd armor upgrade in TvP. I swear I can remember reading or hearing something about Terran's not getting the 3rd armor upgrade in TvP because it wasn't worth the gas, unless the P went carriers.

I can't remember exactly why it was, but I think it had something to do with how it didn't effect how many hits it took goons to kill tanks when P was +3 attack, regardless of T's armor.

Am I just making this up, or what?

whoever told you that is a giant newbie. always get the armor if you can.

most of the damage a terran army takes isnt even from goons late game.. its mostly from siege tank splash, mines and psi storms. then you have to factor in zealot damage, (which gets reduced greatly by armor upgrades as zealots hit twice) and arbiter/carrier damage, and then you're left with the remaining damage being dealt by goons.. goons are simply a proportion of the damage taken so you shouldn't justify not getting armor simply because "oh goons will still 7 shot tanks anyway even if i get armor.. so the armor doesn't make a difference" which is obviously a farce because siege tanks almost NEVER only take damage from goons. they take damage from multiple sources and the armor might end up keeping a tank alive at 1 hp etc..

tldr: siege tanks take damage from multiple sources, so your friend's reasoning is flawed.

Well, you're right that it doesn't make a difference for goons vs tanks. A tank will fall to a +3 upgraded goon after 7 hits no matter whether or not its 2 armor upped or 3. I can't help but think that there's other uses for the extra hp though, zealots will take longer to kill the tank etc.

actually dude, I think you meant that the TC's reasoning is flawed, since the TC is the one that thinks T doesn't need to get a 3rd armor upgrade unless the P is going carriers. just thought you might want to know to correct your otherwise legit post.

but yeah-- even if you took a lot of damage from goons, you can still assume that the p isn't matching you upgrade for upgrade. more armor = happier terran, I think. I haven't heard anything that says otherwise. I play T myself, and I feel like I would have remembered reading something like that.

IdrA didnt get third armor in the game vs G5 on destination that was uploaded recently, and Flash didn't get third armor in the rep of him vs backho iirc (both games lategame situations where they certainly had the gas)

I think I pretty clearly stated it wasn't my idea to not get the 3rd armor.

3-3 150/24 = 6.25 7hits 150/16 = 9.38 10 hits

So yeah, with just that i would say it doesn't make much of a difference. The only real benefit is vs carriers.

and the zealot hits doesn't really count because the majority of zealot damage on tanks is from splash.

wow way to completely ignore my post

have you ever played late game TvP? a large proportion of the damage a terran army takes isnt from direct attacks from zealots/goons, such as splash damage from tanks, mines, psi storms, and arbiter/carriers. armor helps against splash. armor helps against mines. armor helps against carriers/arbiters. these other unaccounted factors will reduce a tanks HP to a level other than 150, which undermines and devalues the importance of those calculations.

Actually alot of pro terrans don't get 3-3 and stick on 3-2. I think it's probably a good thing to get 3-3 in most cases, but I doubt it makes much difference.

More upgrades is always better. I don't see a reason not to get it unless for some reason you have no gas at all.

It is something to do with protoss does 500 damage per shot, so getting another armor for only 499 damage isn't going to do shit.

I've seen this alot too in pro games terrans usually only get 3-2. Just like how pro protoss usually only upgrade 2nd armor then 1st shield instead of 3rd armor and usually stop there. Really though if it's late enough in the game i see no reason no to get that extra upgrade.

There's one other thing you're forgetting:

Flash has near-perfect macro. He doesn't need anything to keep his mins/gas spent. However, for most relevant levels of play, you're not going to have perfect macro. You're going to get supply blocked, or miss a production round in late game. The third armor upgrade may not provide that much benefit, but it gets mins/gas spent.

I get it occasionally, but I don't go out of my way to do it. In practise, it is hardly noticeable. Priority should be on getting 3 attack and making more units, not getting an armour up that will help you marginally.
