As many of you will know, Germans love their beer. All over the world Germany is famous for the quality of a) their cars, and b) their beer. Consequently, there is hardly anything Germans take so seriously as cars and beer. And that is saying something for a people as lighthearted as us.
We used to take pride in drinking the most beer per person in the whole world - an achievement the Czechs took from us in the late 90ies. As much as we pretend to be hurt over this, if there is any other nation in the world we would acknowledge as excellent beer brewers and drinkers, it's the Czechs. So no hard feelings.
The biggest public binge drinking in the world - Oktoberfest
We still have the most breweries in the world, by far. And, as diverse as the range of beer brands and kinds in Germany is, generally, the quality is outstanding. In fact, the first food quality laws the Germans gave themselves were for, you guessed it, beer. As early as 1156 laws demanded punishment for brewers who make bad quality beer. Most known of course is the German, or rather Bavarian, Reinheitsgebot (purity law) of 1516, which stated that beer is only to made from barley, water, and hop. The law is known to every beer loving German to this day (although, unfortunately, not in effect anymore).
Why do I write all this? Well, even though us Germans generally agree that German beer is the best in the world (surprise), near religious debates are fought over which of the thousands Germans brands is the best one. Every beer lover has his or her favorite kind and brand, and will firmly defend his favorite against all accusations. The circle of likewise beer enthusiastic friends I use to drink with is no expection. Everyone has his favorite brand, and will grimace when offered an inferior beverage. Not only that, but there is no brand everyone does not have an opinion of, be it good or bad. One may look down upon the cheap Oettinger, while the other may laugh about the overpriced Warsteiner.
The debate has raged for years or dare I say decades now, as some of us go back all the way to elementary school. Well, tonight, it's about to be settled in
Zee Beertest
From all over Germany we will travel to meet up for the ultimate beer taste test. The testing material are over 30 carefully selected brands from all over Germany, including of course the favorites of all contestants, and, to make things interesting, also a couple of well known foreign beers. The general procedure will involve 5 tasting rounds of 6 brands per round. The 6 brands will be served in neutral looking glasses and will be filled up by neutral (and sober) referrees in a separate room. For each of the 6 glasses, the contestants have to guess the brand, rank the taste on a scale and give a price range they think the beer is in. Dry cookies and water will be availabe to neutralize tasting senses betweens tries.
The best beer in the world
While the whole test promises to be a good time already, the real hilarity will of course ensue from the guesses and the overall scoring, compared to the usual bold claims of quality everyone has. Will zatic denouce his favorite Jever as cheap trash brew? Will he praise the mediocre import? The stakes are high, as weeks of trash talking have preceded tonight's event. The winner can be sure to be respected for decades, and the poorest scorer will likely be ridiculed into abstinence.
So TL, wish me luck in this test of faith and honor. I will update this thead with results on Monday.

I'm not going to lie. Germany's alcohol-centered social scene depresses me. I wish more people would invite me to dinner.

i might want to go to germany one day to see oktoberfest. not participate in it, but just watch 100s of drunk people fight each other and do crazy things

GL HF, beer is good for your health (depending on the amount )! I'm actually not sure if i ever drank german beer? Maybe Schöffenhoffer, is it from germany? guess i'll probably try that jever, is it comparable to Pilsner Urquell? I am also lilttle unpatriotic lately - drinking hoegaarden, there is something to it too...

Theres a german community in my country (pretty much completely concentrated in one village). That place lives from turism, and they have Oktoberfest (a shitload of people from around the world attends there in that time). My uncle lives a few miles away, so in vacations i often go there, and i have to say, its awesome...i can´t even imagine how good it must be in Germany. =)
LOL, i just realized that i´m wearing an Oktoberfest T-shirt right now, nice timing
The village is called "Villa General Belgrano" for those who wonder.

Awesome man, I'm so jealous. If I had to rank the three things in the world I love, it would be:
1. My Family 2. Life 3. Beer
And you guys have undoubtedly the greatest beer in the world, no wonder I spent 2 weeks drinking it non-stop.
Just make sure you don't get too drunk and uhh.. arrested.

Two years ago I had to make a big research about the beer production and consumption in Germany. Back then I came across a very interesting article in Spiegel on the subject. It was basically about some dudes making the simple experiment of tasting blindfolded different beers and trying to guess which one was their favorite (everyone had one by default). Nobody was able to guess right even when there were only 3 glasses of beer to choose from.
So the conclusion was that the beer taste is defined by number of factors and the actual taste of the beer is only one of them. Not to say that by the production of the beer, there are so many different variables that are not related to the actual technology or the specific recipe of the beer brand. So even if you like Jever its not like it tastes the exact same way every time, you like it because of completely different set of reasons. I think in southern Germany ppl drink their local brands, in the north the big TV brands are more beloved.
But still thats just my opinion. Good luck with your research. I'm personally a big beer fan and my favorite one is the Guinness. It tastes like literally nothing else on this world

So "taste" is highly psychological issue. study

Are you guys exclusively testing the big commerical brands, or just the local dudes, or maybe a combination?
Is it somewhat similar to the US (and I guess the rest of the world?) in that commercial beers blow ass 95% of the time, and the best ones come from local breweries? The US gets such a bad rap because our commercial beers are fucking horrible and watered down beyond belief. This is what most people judge us on.
Microbrews are fucking AWESOME in the states. It's just a shame they're so expensive a lot of times

Sorry Zatic but Belgian beer is the best without a doubt. German beer is okay though.

Haha have fun!
My favorite German beer is Warsteiner Dunkel... So good... n_n;
Favorite beer (that is easily accessible) overall is definitely Stella Artois (BELGIUM!!), although in general I am a fan of stouts and darker beers.

Agreed. America has 3 good widely accessible beers - Blue Moon, Sam Adams, and Yuengling. Every other big name brand beer is a piece of shit. Someone tried to convince me that Pabst is a good beer the other day... I was about to punch him in the face and drown him in the Bud Light that he must have been raised on. Yuengling is indeed the only US beer that is enjoyable, although unfortunately not quite my personal taste. It is a good beer though.
Hawk, no, the big brands in Germany are excellent. There is no objective difference in quality from big commercial brands to small local breweries.
Btw I predict total disaster on the brand guessing and I will be surprised if anyone will get a particular brand right. Guessing the price range and giving a taste score will be interesting though.

I absolutely LOVE beer. Unfortunately, I spent the summer in Germany and have determined that the Germans do not. Nor, apparently, is it even made there.
Lager is not beer. Lager is flavoured, fizzy water that happens to contain alcohol.
Ale is beer.

I don't think it will be a total disaster on brand guessing, because some (at least here) have very distinct tastes. I think price range will be more difficult, and the test will illustrate how much brand name and marketing alters the opinions of people. It's pretty interesting.
And fanta nailed the good beers here, but isn't blue moon imported? yuengling probably barely passes for commercial, since it's only available in like 6-7 states in the NE and really only prominently available in a few of those places.
the reg lager and the black and tan fucking kick asssss
|
Blue Moon is a Belgian-style beer (this is what confuses some people into thinking it's imported I think, because it's written right on the bottle) that is centered in Colorado iirc with breweries in other states as well (NJ included).
I didn't know Yuengling was so localized, I always see Yuengling trucks so I assumed that since they have the means of transporting it throughout the continental US they would be fools not to. I guess it's hard to expand as a good beer producer in America when so much of the beer consumption is done by stupid college kids who have no appreciation (or need, I guess) for good beer.

Yea i've only had/seen yuengling a couple times, on the eastern part of america.

Sounds awesome!
I was never much for beer or wine testing though, especially if you have to spit it out. That's just retarded. If beer didn't get me drunk I wouldn't drink it. I'm not the casual "let's have one beer" kind of drinker

its an organic beer from germany. Really delicious but about 1€ / 500mL, thus rather something for taste, than for getting drunk.

It is like 120 cents for 1,5L at a supermarket or about 60-80 cents per bottle, depending on your district of Berlin, at you local Späti (a small(!!) shop that sells like everything and it all will cost like double but its open and convenient and it sells beer at 3 o'clock )

Well, Sleeman (12 different varieties, 3 are limited edition) is brewed in my hometown, and it is a popular Canadian beer brewing company. They have a lot of good beers. However, I suggest you stick away from most of the "Americanized" beers we are starting to have here. Even Molson Canadian is crap..... And they try to market it as "Canadian"..... The fuckers should be sued for false advertisement.
Another good brand of beers would be Alexander Keith's (India Pale Ale, White, Red, Dark, and Light). A third would be Rickards (White, Red, and Honey Brown). Rickards is produced by Molson, but they don't fuck this one up. Molson also has created a very nice stock ale, but it's rare to find.
Steamwhistle makes a really, really nice pilsner.
Also, there are a lot (and I mean a lot) of microbreweries in Canada. Sleeman is the biggest one in my hometown, but we have a total of 7 of them (at least, those are the ones I know about, and some of them make organic beers), and the city is only a little over 100 000 people. Even if you don't have the same taste as me, I'm sure you'll find something to suit your tastes. We are, after all, a bunch of raging alcoholics.
EDIT - I thought I should mention - Kitchener, Ontario had it's name changed years ago. It's old name was New Berlin. It got that name for a reason. Oktoberfest there is about as good as you can get without going to Germany.
And I should know - my heritage is German. I used to go to Oktoberfest every year, until University dragged me 500 km away

Berlin's Oktoberfest sucks really hard in my opinion. Just one tent and lots of stupid folks. Just like the Biermeile (roughly: beer lane).

Fuck yeah! I've never had a German beer unfortunately but my favorite US Beer is by farrrrrrr Yeungling. Glad to hear it has the approval stamp from a certified German.

So my mum's ballet company threw an octoberfest party and now I have a GIANT ice bucket filled with various beers. So far I have to say Spaten is pretty damned tasty.
|
Hoegaarden is also a really good beer.

Im just drinking a good old Rothaus Tannenzäpfle made in the depth of the Black Forest.

I kinda like Warsteiner
There is no way a pilsener is the best beer in the world it all tastes like watery catpiss.
I like Belgian beers better than the German ones I think, though some of them were nice (I can't remember the names).
|
I like red's. Doesn't particularly matter what brand.
Falcon also has the best beer commercials I've ever seen, though I never got to try.

We have OB also. Hmm... not much of a selection. I know that a pint of Guiness here is about $15 =/

Jever is by far the best german beer, i couldn't agree more! And 5,0 is actually drinkable if it's cold. A couple of friends and me did this experiment a while ago and Eichbaum Ureich was the clear favorite. It's a good beer for a reasonable price. Also it's from Mannheim, which isn't very far from my hometown (Go Baden!). A friend of mine actually identified Oettinger at first sight, I quote: "Das sieht ja schon aus wie Schmieröl!" (roughly translating to:"It looks like motor oil!") Anyway, good luck. And next time maybe invite some of us. Perhaps someone is living next door, who knows? Prost

Oh yeah thanks for reminding me.
The event was insane fun. We had like 15 people there, and 2 guys as referees dressed in ambulance uniforms with rubber gloves, noting everything on charts and playing all serious. Rules were slightly different from OP, it was 24 different servings. The categories were Premium, International, and Discount. Guessing the brand yielded 3 points, getting the category right 1 point. You also had to give each serving a score 1-10 and give an explanation for the score - both were entirely so people could be laughed at later for misjudging their favorites.
My start was phenomenal, got the first two (Carlsberg and Rothaus) correct and also the 3rd category. From then on I didn't do well at all, especially the international category raped me. I did however rate exactly according to my own previous statements, giving Jever my second best rating and rated all the discount brand 2-4 points (5.0: 2 points, "disgusting"). In the end, I placed somewhere in the mid field.
After the 24 rounds the 3 highest ranking brands were served in a headsup to determine the overall winner. Now comes the big surprise and material for 2 days of discussion that followed. In the headsup, "5.0" of all brands won over Beck's and was thus the clear winner of the test. Still can't believe it.
Efes (a turkish beer) scored surprisingly well, somewhere in the top 10. The most common German premium Pils didn't do too well, Warsteiner and Krombacher both placed around 10th. I think most of the rest scored pretty much as expected.

What the hell are you guys drinking?

As for local patriotism I should include Beck's but I don't find it that special.

Asahi (Premium) is the fucking shit mang
only beer I can keep on drinking without constantly reminding myself how bloated I'm going to be the next day

Becks? hmm.
Although I know the same beer can taste completely different depending on where you drink it, for example I am personally not a Heineken fan at all. I was at Amsterdam airport waiting for Dknight last year when I stopped at the bar for a few drinks, I asked what they had and the guy said Heineken, I immediately asked what else they have. After a short discussion the bartender mentioned that he gets the same reaction, people refuse to drink Heineken because it tastes terrible back in their own country. He promised on tap, in Holland that I would love it or I wouldn't have to pay for the beer.
It tasted nothing like the Heineken you get in bottles here in Australia, it was actually very good.

i found this "october beer club" near my house which serves really good beer.
oh crap. i googled and it and i think you can only find it in japan. if you're ever in japan and visit roppongi (which is a must) you should stop by there for a drink and a snack. the food there was actually really good as well.

Shock Top is a good American beer. It's kind of similar to Blue Moon which is also damn good. Also here in upstate New York there are a bunch of local breweries and some of them make great beers.. it's a matter of tasting a lot and finding them.

Blue Moon (and the seasonal Honey Moon) was my previous favorite. However, I haven't had any alcohol at all the last few months, until about two weeks ago. Had a Blue Moon or two, and it didn't taste right at all. Then I had a Newcastle, and it was just as good as I had remembered. So New Castle and Guinness would probably be my two favorite beers now.

I think it's usually broken up by country. It's virtually the same everywhere in the states. I'd imagine it's pretty similar throughout Europe, because who would buy it if the tastes were generally inconsistent?
