UK people: help me out!

Arrian United States889 Posts October 07 2009 02:54 GMT #1 The help of anybody familiar with the UK higher education system would be appreciated here. I'll try and make this as quick as possible. I am a junior linguistics major at the University of Iowa in the United States. I want to study abroad for the fall '10 semester in the United Kingdom to bolster my credentials as a prospective Ph.D candidate at top American universities (Harvard, Yale, University of Chicago, etc.). My aim is to study Welsh or other Celtic languages. Although I have been to the United Kingdom of several occasions, I profess to be woefully unacquainted with the upper education system there. Which universities or colleges should I be looking to that actively teach these languages? If you're not sure if they teach these languages, what places should I search for or research as mid-to-upper tier schools that would be welcoming to an international student? My school arranges these endeavors independently so there's no worry about actually being able to set this up (at the moment at least) and let's assume cost is not an obstacle. Any help would be very much appreciated. No help is assumed .

ShloobeR Korea (South)3820 Posts October 07 2009 03:19 GMT #2 I'm not sure about Welsh but if you want to study Irish Gaelic then you could try the university of Galway (and Galway is an aweeeesome city)... but... it's not UK... so... i dunno

jello_biafra United Kingdom6641 Posts October 07 2009 12:35 GMT #3 Personally I'd recommend The University of Edinburgh, it's one of the best universities in the country, teaches the languages you're interested in and is located in the city that's been voted best place to live in the UK for at least a couple years now.

The Raurosaur 198 Posts October 07 2009 18:56 GMT #4 Edinburgh has an excellent linguistics department, I'd definitely recommend it. The University of Bangor has a fairly good department and you could probably study Welsh there. Edinburgh is probably your best bet though - it's a common choice for US exchange students, and a nice place to live.
