Disclaimer: I love Park Seungjoon, but I don't want to look like him.

As part of my on-going struggle with my weight/self-image (I have zero self-confidence in the last six or so months.) and because Lilsusie has also been blogging about this kind of thing I decided to put my diet plan out in the open with the hopes of shamefully motivating myself not to break it or give up.

Bluntly put, I hate my body. I've gone to the lengths of covering up the mirror in my room because I can't stand seeing myself in it. Also I get guilt trips after eating unhealthy foods which are far from pleasant. I know there's no way aside from surgery to change my face, but my body is something I *can* work to be more comfortable with.

When it starts to become a struggle to even go out in public it kind of feels like the right time to make a change.

I am also considering cutting out meat all together because I suffer from emetophobia (fear of vomiting.) and meat always makes me wary. I might be able to save myself quite a lot of stress by eliminating it from my diet.

I'm not delusional enough to think that I'm capable of having a body like the Asian girls I'm around every day. After all they are genetically predisposed in a different way to myself and their diet has evolved in a way that doesn't reflect the one from my home country. I am fine with possessing a badunkadunk (sp?) as Susie so wonderfully put it. I'd rather it didn't resemble a certain zerg player's own though.

My Stats:

Age: 24
Height: 5"11'
Current Weight: 83.6kg
Goal Weight: 70kg or below.
Starting Date: September 1st 2009.
Goal Date: Not set. I don't want to try crash dieting.

My Food List:

This is mainly based upon what is readily available to me in Seoul. Sadly the selection of 'diet' foods here isn't as wide as that of England, but I'm looking for healthy alternatives within Korean cooking.

Any suggestions for things to avoid or embrace would be gratefully accepted.

'Yes' Foods:

Vegetables (except potatoes.)
Fruits (not to excess.)
Soy products: Tofu, soy milk.
Plain low fat yogurt.
Fruit flavored low fat yogurt.
Herbs.
Eggs.
Tuna.
Beans, pulses and grains.
Cereals (wholewheat only and not to excess.)
Wholemeal noodles (rarely.)
Water.
Green tea.
Small amounts of organic fruit juice.
Reduced calories/fat dressings (sparingly.)
Salads.
Soups.

'No' Foods:

Take away.
Coffee.
Soda.
Chocolate/candies.
Cakes/pastries.
Biscuits.
Snack foods (like chips.)
Ice cream.
Ketchup (giving this up will be hard.)
White rice.
Noodles.
Cheese. (*sobs*)
All fried foods.
Meat (possibly.)

Exercise Routine:

I'm a bit limited with this because I have a slightly odd bone structure in my chest (nothing predator-esque or anything!) and certain things push down upon my wind pipe making it hard to run for a long period etc.

I've started off with getting off the subway one stop earlier after work which adds about 15 minutes brisk walking time to my journey home.

I'm not really sure where to go from there considering my job is liable to get a bit more hectic and time consuming. I'm hoping that I don't have to step it up *too* much and that changing my food intake and reducing my portions by using small bowls will do some of the work.

화이팅! Good luck to everyone else in the TL fitness initiative too.

Yeah - actually they're not going to be too hard to give up. They're loaded with salt and other additives here. Plus they only taste good if you mix them with other things.

Kind of sad to see no noodles or rice while living in an asian country, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

If by 'Herbs" for Yes foods, you mean marijuana, then that's not really a good thing. It will give you munchies.

Yeah - I actually do like cooking at home so I'm going to experiment a lot more in our kitchen. I have found that getting off the subway one stop earlier is a route where I can avoid passing any kinds of food shops so I am sticking to that. I luckily don't live too close to any hamburger places like I did a few months ago. I'm burger free for almost three weeks now

My wife recently went Vegan. She has been totally into it for about a month and the effect on her weight (which was about 20lbs over) isn't nearly as much as her personality. Its amazing how much what you eat affects how you feel.

Considering she used to eat nothing but white flour, meat, and cheese, and now is 100% vegan, is really wild. Even moreso, she doesnt even eat whiteflour anymore. The one time she ate a "vegan pizza" about 2 weeks in, she said she wanted to cry. She realized how bad all that shit made her feel.

She read 2 books, "The Omnivores Dilema" and "In Defense of Food", that I had bought about 2 years ago, and she pretty much chagned over night. I'm an omnivore, but lean towards organic, and less that 1 serving of meat a day on average.

I really wish you the best, cause I know total lifestyle changes are possible, not just diets. GL GL

I have never been overweight so I don't really know getting out of that situation is, but throughout my life I've always had something physically challenging that I enjoyed doing.. In my opinion working out for the sake of working out is kind of a waste of time and might not benefit you much compared to doing something physically challenging because you enjoy it. For example I love biking and when I lived in Copenhagen DK for three months I biked to work every single day, ~11 miles round trip, plus rode to other places just for fun or to do things.. I rode 42 miles round trip to get to a concert, one of the best experiences of my life. So my advice is to make sure you have something intense you do because you enjoy it, I dunno what opportunities there are in KR but there is always something.. I dunno how bad your cardio is limited by the wind pipe thing you talked about but I'm sure you can still do it.

You have made no mention of alcohol. Do you completely abstain?

You also want to do 30 minutes of cardio a day, or have a goal of working up to that. Walking is fine. Obviously it will burn calories, but it will also make you feel better mentally which in turn helps maintain discipline. Also, make sure your self-talk about all this is good. Consciously stay positive when you feel the negative emotions creeping in. Make it fun.

It's cliche stuff, but it really helps because its hard to make big habit changes without failing a little bit at first, but the key is to not get too down and keep up with your schedule and goals no matter how you're feeling. Eventually it will get easier as these things become habits.

Good luck!

Good luck, I know you can do it.

The beginning imo was the hardest but once you get over like the first week, it becomes a habit.
I myself lost like around 15 pounds in two months just off of cardio + healthier diet, with cheat days included :o.

I maybe have two or so beers and a couple of shots of soju per month if I go out to dinner with friends. I'm not tee-total, but I don't like drinking and never get drunk. I prefer to spend my money on other things and I don't like the taste much.

I feel that Strength Training is the best way to burn fat. If you don't want to gain a lot of muscle mass just do about 15-20 minutes of cardio to get your heart rate up then start lifting small weights with lots of reps

I am on a diet too, and vegetarian as well :D An advantage of not having meat is also the reduction in trans and saturated fats ~ make sure you have enough tofu or nuts to get protein though because it is necessary.

Your Allowed/Disallowed food lists look good, but are you going to be counting calories or anything? Make sure you are getting enough lest you shoot your metabolism and make losing weight harder and harder. You should definitely do some weights training and try for 20-30mins physical activity a day (this reminds me, I have to do this today, too -.-).

I find the diet part easy, as I never really enjoyed eating all that much anyway - going to the gym is such a hastle though -.- Sooo boring working out and even though you feel good after it I still don't get how people can motivate themselves enough to enjoy going.

A couple of years ago I felt the same, rock bottom self confidence, severely obese and hated my life, I started to make a very slow changes, I won't go in depth but more info in my two fitness blogs. As I started to lose a bit of weight, started feeling healthy and started feeling better and happier due to the healthier foods I was eating my self confidence started to grow, and it turned into a very amazing cycle. As my confidence went up so did my motivation and as my motivation went up so did my fitness levels. Rinse and repeat.

On August 29 2009 14:35 NeverGG wrote:I'm not delusional enough to think that I'm capable of having a body like the Asian girls I'm around every day.

At one point of time, I would have been your kindred spirit in this remark, but having gone through it. Sweetheart, you are dead wrong, you can have that body and better.

When I started losing weight, I was 5'6" 98kg.. I am unfortunately still the same height . But now weigh 70kg, with a nice deal of muscle mass. When I started I also had no delusions of becoming a mens health cover model, the concept wasn't even in my reality, it just wasn't possible, I just wanted to lose the weight. I am now at a point where I am fitter and healthier than the average citizen and I'm only a couple months away from something I once thought was impossible, by the time summer comes around, I will be walking around the beach with a set of sick-pack abs I could be proud of. So don't threat .

Onto some quick tips, I wouldn't by any means cut out meat. Nothing better than lean chicken! But things like Tuna, Salmon, even some shellfish have a ton of protein and are very healthy for you, you also need red meat in moderation to help maintain your levels of zinc, iron and you also do need some low levels of saturated fats to keep your heart healthy.

Drink tons of water and green tea, and coffee isn't even that bad, a couple of cups a day is ok, it's a great stimulant and arguable the best legal fat burner available.

Your yes foods list is great, just consume out of that list 5-6 times a day, small portions with a massive breakfast.

Exercise is important but not vital for initial fat loss, I lost about 8-12kg without too much exercise, all I was doing was the same as you, stopping one station earlier on the train and walking home, about 2km, and once maybe twice a week I'd attempt a 2-3km run/walk. First time I ever tried to run, I ran for about 40 seconds and nearly passed out. I can now comfortably go for 40 minutes. So any health issues you think you may have now, a great possibility that the problems will solve themselves as you get healthier.

I would incorporate body weight exercises, things like pushups, or knee pushups if you can't do full ones, body weight squats, find a bench or something and do dips, because even though you can lose the weight without too much exercise, it's the exercise that releases those hormones into your body making you feel relaxed, happier and eventually filled with confidence.

Bah! I started rambling on again..

Good luck!
