I'm thinking of buying one, before I was only thinking of 360 but since the new PS3 Slim is both $299 and sexy it may now be what I want. Right now though I am leaning towards the 360.

Things to take into consideration:
- I'm going to base which one I buy on exclusives for that console only. If the game is also coming out on PC, I WILL get the pc version of a console version.
- Graphics/HD none of that shit matters to me only the quality of the games.

It's more about the list of current exclusives for the console and the upcoming exclusives, a list I'm actually having trouble finding so if someone can help me out here. How good is the PS3 marketplace? Does it hold up against the 360 counterpart?

Wait for the PS3 120 gb. Apparently there are some really good games for PS3 that are coming (most notably for me, God of War 3).

There's also other stuff like Resistance 2, Killzone 2, MGS4

I'd say (thought I can't actually say I'm completely informed) that, while the 360 has a lot of great games, the PS3 has a lot of exclusives to which I am really looking forward. It's also got some great exclusives out right now, too.

For right now, though, you'll probably be able to find more games on the 360 that you couldn't otherwise find on the PS3.

Apparently, discussion of consoles always lead to fanboys trolling each other. I would prefer the 360, however Sony is such an a$$ not to release their "exclusives" to the pc, so the PS3 might be a better deal.

basically for the ps3 theres alot of pretty good games like resistance 2 MGS4 a new better tales of vesperia is coming for the ps3 this year im not sure if you like rpg-ish games but i would buy it valkyria chronicles is pretty good and im not sure if you like to mass buttons or not but i like to steam roll people in dynasty warriors 6 ninja gaiden is a pretty good action adventure game and the 2nd one is coming out for the ps3. if you racing games wait for gran turismo 5 or try motorstorm and if you like god of war. god of war 3 comes out in 2010. also the internet for the ps3 is free so . For the market 360 sells more because it was just generally cheaper while ps3 was more expensive but its cheap now and it holds more data and isnt easily broken as a 360. i think its a good buy and sorry for my super long post

Exclusive titles do not really matter these days. You can always find a port or a similar counterpart. If you love MGS and wait for GoW3/new ICO game, go get a PS3 Slim. Or you can buy a Xbox360 to play Splinter Cell: Conviction, Dante's Inferno (oops, it's also on PS3) and Fable III next year.

One thing, for downloadable titles, XBLA >>>>> PSN. I LOVE CASTLE CRASHERS HAHAHA.
No more SKT1, it's SKP2.

If you only play exclusives, get a PS3. Multiplatform games on PS3 are 99% of the time inferior to the Xbox 360 version. If you were getting a console as your ONLY gaming platform, then Xbox 360 is probably better.

I have a 360 but I'd recommend you get the PS3. It has more exclusives that will never go to PC, it plays Blu-ray, it has built-in wifi, and it doesn't break after a year.

I mostly use my 360 to rent games and I try not to buy anything unless it's $20 or less used so I don't have too much money invested in it when it eventually breaks out of warranty (my warranty ends this year).

After my warranty ends, I'll probably buy a PS3 Slim. I am still interested in buying whatever the next Xbox will be though, because other than the hardware being unreliable it's been a great experience.

I loled, but it's true, XBox 360s still break down easy....

hmm, on topic..Get a PS3 with PS1/2 play back, sure the graphics won't be any better but you still get to play those old favorites. I have a PS3 here for about 3 years already and it's still working fine.

It depends on what you like but from owning a PS3 here's my take:

Reliability: PS3 is more reliable than X360... reports are X360 have ~50% fail rate: Source

Online Functionality: XBOX Live trumps PS Network, although i'm satisfied with PS3's online capabilities for COD4, Little Big Planet and NHL 09

FPS Games: X360 has equal FPS lineup to PS3 (Halo 3 and GoW = Resistance and Killzone)

Action Games: Both have GTA, but PS3 has Metal Gear Solid

RPG Games: Both are getting Final Fantasy, but X360 has more RPG's since launch...

Sports Games: Equal level of games... only fanboys will tell you otherwise.

Driving Games: X360 has advantage with Forza, and PS3 owners still don't know when GT5 is coming out...

overall, PS3 is better cause i know it won't fail on me unlike X360's reputation. Both have equivalent games, but reliability's gotta be a deal breaker.
just lurking around...

Well yeah, this is also true.
My pc sucks bad (pentium 3), so I play the games I want on the PS3 (if ever they're available). But then I realized that if I saved up instead of buying those games, it would only take me 4~5 games and then I'll have a great pc already.

This.

Although 360 seem like it dominating the gaming industry right now, it somehow lack the exclusive title just mean for 360. Meanwhile, PS3 have almost every game that 360 have.

You can check the list of Xbox 360 exclusive title HERE

The only exclusive title that I wanna play for 360 right now is Fable 2 and Gears of War 2, while the rest is just bleh.

The pstriple is actually cheaper now thanks to PSN being free, so if you think with your wallet it's a nice bonus.

If your a fanboy of Final Fantasy games or just japanese games in general, they're far more likely to be on ps3 and will be made for ps3 first unlike most games which perform better on 360.

But if you've got a lot of friends who play on live, it may be worth the extra cash and eventual rrod because the 360 online community really is that much bigger.

PSN store is nice, it actually has an inbuilt movie rental system where you can download movies for ~$4 (HD is $5). 360 has a much bigger marketplace of games and is connected to netflix.

Honestly though, an HD setup is 100% worth it if you've got the means. Graphics don't make or break anything, but I seriously doubt you still watch VHS tapes. And if you do go the HD route (HD monitors with no input delay run ~$200 on newegg with free shipping if you dont care about TV itself) pick up an HDMI cable from newegg or monoprice and save yourself at least $30.

I think PSN is getting castle crashers some time in November or something. The newgrounds team is literally about 6 people, so the cross system ports take a while

Hahaha that's a funny picture.
To be honest, just get upgrades for your PC or something. I have a Xbox 360 and a Wii and I barely play them, ends up being a waste of time. If you get something you might as well get a PS3 for the Blu-Ray :o

With Black Friday upon us I thought it ok to bump this thread and not start a new one asking simply which should I buy.

Xbox Reasoning
I love the games on the Xbox but I don't like the fact that of the five people I know who own one theirs have died on them. The Xbox has a lot of downloadble games such as castle crashers, duke 3d, south park tower defense that I would be interested in getting. I really just want to play people online in sports games such as NBA 2K10, and with XBOX live there will be lots of people playing but I dont want to pay the fifty bucks a year.

PS3 Reasoning
I love the playstation controller, I don't know why it just more comfortable in my hand. I don't have to pay for multiplayer but I hear the psn has very few users and I may have to wait 15 mins just to get into a game. Blue ray(gf wants that ).

I personally don't care about avatars, trophies/awards, twitter/facebook, movie/music downloads/renting, non-downloadable exclusives halo/gow resistance 2/killzone.

Questions I have are Does the PS3 support more than two player local multiplayer? Does the PSN have enough players to get games pretty much whenever I would try? Is paying for xbox live really worth it? Does the Xbox really rrod that often? Does the PS3 slim have issues with dying?

There are deals all over the place but for the the PS3 I am looking at the Walmart PS3 slim with uncharted, batman archum asylum, and the dark knight blue ray.

But I ask you tl what should I get?
If Barbie is so popular why do we have to buy her friends?
So no fek

As far as deals go this season, PS3 wins, I'd say.

As for which to choose, go with whatever games you want more. 360 does have a good amount of games, and if multiplayer is your thing, Live is great. I can't speak for the PSN side of things, as I've yet to experience it, but I'm more of a single player gamer. Finally getting my PS3 for sexy RPG time.

For defects, I wouldn't really worry about them too much anymore. From what I understand, new 360s should hardly ever RROD, due to the new chip set, or whatever. And if it does, and you're still under warranty, I'm pretty sure you can send it back for free, and they'll give you a free month of Live for the inconvenience, though you'll be without your console for a month or so. For PS3 slim, it's still relatively new, though I have heard of some very rare problems with it, with rare being the key word.

I know that the PSN is finally coming out with some decent downloadable games, but Castle Crashers is awesome.

Personally, there's hasn't been an exclusive game out on 360 within the last year or so that I've actually had to play. Believe it or not, the last exclusive I seriously played on the console was Castle Crashers.

So, make your decision based on games, and how much multiplayer means to you, I guess. My guess for PSN, though someone who actually has it will have to say otherwise, is that only the unpopular games are hard to find people for, which could be said true for 360, to an extent.

Once again, I'll say that PS3 bundle this year is really sexy. Two good games + a great movie on Blu Ray.

If you mainly play multiplayer, get 360.
If you mainly play singleplayer, get the PS3.
I have both and I never touch the PS3 online.
I don't have mono anymore. Woooo!

PSN is really good, no reason to go for Xbox Live over it. PSN has all the same features and there is no subscription fee.

Also, Xbox 360 has a lot of its best games also available on PC. PS3 is slowly winning the exclusives war imo

I have an Xbox 360 & PS3 and I would say Xbox 360 is by far the better choice at this point. There are plenty of good exclusives on both, but for me, Mass Effect 2 seals the deal. Not only that, but some of PS3's most prized exclusives are coming Xbox 360 anyway, such as Final Fantasy XIII.

Both are worth getting, but if I had to choose one, it would be the 360.

I have an Xbox 360 and PS3 also, but Xbox360 is by far not the better choice for me. This is my decision making flowchart for buying games:
For games that are on the PC, Xbox and PS, PC gets the pick.
For games that are on the Xbox and PS, PS gets the pick.
For games that are on the Xbox and only the Xbox, well, not much of a choice here. Same thing for PS exclusives.

Like DoctorHelvetica said, a lot of the "best" games out there are actually on PC too. Mass Effect 2? PC all the way. (Played Mass Effect 1 on PC already)

You answered your own question when you said you don't want to pay a subscription fee and your girlfriend wants a Blu-ray player. PSN is pretty much like XBL except less people but there is still like 250,000 people playing MW2 on PS3.

I think its a waste of money to buy a 360 for the same amount as a PS3 nowadays. PS3 is the better console. Pimp ass hardware, 1080p bluray support meaning not only is it a better display media but the games will be bigger because bluray cds are fucking massive. PSN is good for me, I play SF4 and have a shitty ISP and still have plenty of competition. It comes with an internet browser so all I have to do is google surfthechannel and I can stream the world straight to my television. Syncs really easily with your home PC for movie streaming (great for dling shit on the fly and watching in bed with your gf) and is just way more versatile. The controller also works for your PC so you can play old emulators with a ps3 controller instead of keyboard (pimp). Only excusable reason for buying a 360 now a days over a PS3 is if you want to get into competitive shooters. 360 definitely has the market there and xbox live would come in handy. Also 360 exclusives are all shooters (gears, left 4 dead, halo) but PS3 has better RPGs and the rest of the games are shared between the systems.

To recap PS3 for: Streaming
Pimp internet
Blu-ray
Longevity (I'm sure xbox 1080 is due anytime now, 360 came out cause xbox original couldn't compete with ps2)
and ps3 fanboyism (its the ultimate system, be on the winning team, fuck xbox)
rechargable wireless controllers. pimppp

edit: also ya, ps3 supports 4 player local multiplayer.

lol. I'm just suggesting that all of that *do anything* PS3 functionality is a bit redundant if you have a PC with HDMI output. But I guess PS3s are a good deal if you do not have bluray.

Sorry for not checking back until now but I don't play online for lag, UI, and difficultly of use. The 360 is a little better for lag (not by much, but a little bit) but the main reason I play it is because of the ease of getting around and getting together with friends. It's so easy to join groups with other people and go into games like that. I haven't played the ps3 online in about a year now so they may have made improvements but if not, I would go with the 360.

Basically what it comes down to is:
Do you have any use for a blu-ray player? If you do, then don't rule the PS3 out.

Are you planning on playing games online with friends? If not, then don't rule the PS3 out.
If you are planning to play games online with friends, get what system they have. I never play online unless it's with friends. Playing COD MW2 with randoms is the biggest pain in the ass. Not to mention that it's so much more fun IMO to play with the same people every night. Most of them are people that I know from other games too. I only play with 2 or 3 people that I actually know and interact with in real life, but I'm friends with the other guys and I've visited them occasionally.
I don't have mono anymore. Woooo!

Given enough time and you can. Right now there are emulators for everything all the way up to the Wii (no ps3/360 yet).

Sorry to bump the thread, but I thought this article done by Yahoo was funny...

It's all fun and games until the battery dies. Unlike its competitors, which use replaceable AA batteries, the PS3's remote control is glued shut. When the battery goes, Sony customers have to blow $55 on a new controller. Sony says there's an "environmental benefit" since gamers don't have to toss their batteries on a regular basis, but Isidor Buchmann, president of battery-equipment maker Cadex Electronics, says captive batteries are becoming common because it's cheaper for companies to eliminate the battery housing and hatch.

pretty bs to me.

xbox = Direct X box
Ps3= OpenCL

DirectX provides a solid, powerful featureset. OpenGL does not provide any more but larger support for legacy hardware. Ps3 is being held back by opencl it's why not all their games are that great compared to xbox in terms of image quality, although higher textures help.

I would get w.e has the games you like. my take on the op

on the bump

My friends went though 3 xboxes and like 7 controllers breaking the sticks in too much. Anyways it's a trade off wireless for battery time, 2 reasons why ps3 doesn't use batteries 1 is weight/size and 2 is selling controllers.
So no fek

They might last a long time, but I'm sure they'll all eventually die, and then you have to buy a new controller entirely. It's like my old iPod. It lasted a year of regular use, and died. I wasn't willing to pay the $40 or whatever it was to ship it off to Apple, for a sub-par mp3 player.

Though, my guess is that once the battery dies, you'll still be able to use the controller when plugged in. I was able to use my iPod like that, and while it would be a pain in the ass, at least the controller wouldn't be entirely useless.
