Now Brazil gets an easier passage than all the other top teams. if you watched uruguay during groups you would know that they werent going to put up a fight against brazil either. uruguay were shockingly bad

The game is special . It would have ended similar, maybe not such a difference because Uruguay would have been pretty defensive. But not a chance Uruguay would have beat Brazil. This Brazil is not the same from Copa America (and who are we kidding, that copa America was totally created and nobody wanted to play it bar Argentina), they actually care about this tournament.

I also can't help but notice that while this BR team looks like the team to beat this tournament, they still can't compare with the WC2002 one.

So the weakness of Brazilian teams since 2006 is suddenly their strength? ![]()

Many of the European teams seem rather disinterested or distracted by non-footballing matters. Their performance and behaviour on the pitch is rather business-like and mechanical. For example, Croatia have been playing at a stroll without any sense of urgency since the group matches (they played so meekly against Belgium almost as if they wouldn't mind losing and exiting early). Some people strongly disliked the dancing by Brazil and antics of Uruguay. But it's coming from their deep passion for football. Whether passion helps or hinders the performance of players is subject to debate. Too much passion can lead to toxicity. But all these passionate moments capture the magic of football and the WC.

I dunno if that side was all that amazing across the park, felt like that World Cup can be defined as the one where almost no of the favourites showed up. Good sure, but great? Yeah it’s a good theory, although it can only get you so far. The kind of players street football produces are those wide players/number 10s that Brazil are absolutely stacked with. The structure thing can work both ways, in that yes national teams aren’t as well drilled as club sides, but that doesn’t manifest equally. It’s easier to set up a team to be functional and spoiling than develop complex attacking patterns that benefits teams with technical talent. I think what we’re seeing from Brazil is definitely augmented by individual inspiration, but they’re also well drilled by a coach who’s been in situ for ages, with a tough qualifying region and regional tournament to keep them ticking over.

It helps to a point until it can become a very double-edged sword. Between a home World Cup and exorcising the demons of 1950, I think Brazil had a complete collective meltdown and that saw them getting hammered 7-1. But yeah we’ve seen a fair few teams playing in an oddly flat way, unsure why that is.

Their game vs Serbia was very high intensity and if they can bring that I expect they will hinder Portugals more technical and artistic game pretty efficient
