Sounds nice in practice, but because we let any breathing fuckstick get a license and don't do anything to ensure that little grandma can still see more than 10 feet in front of her and react accordingly, most people start going and unexpectedly slam the breaks for no reason. These things are basically traps for rear end accidents because of this My other favorite is the people who completely ignore the yield sign in that situation. That yield sign still applies to you, fucktard, because you're not really on the highway yet. They just accelerate, get side by side with you, then try to merge into you and get pissed when you don't give them way. Like wtf? You are pissed at ME because I didn't let you merge in front of me from a yield-sign merge/acceleration lane, when I am on cruise control on the fucking highway? Fucking dipshits. It's almost as bad as when there are 2 roads merging and one has a yield sign, and people see you coming from the side, and refuse to yield anyways, and just gun it hoping to make it there before you do. Fucking pricks. "New Brunswick Exits" section of Rt. 18 N (off the side from the main highway) has like two of those. And guess what, it's college kids. Faggots.
I am one of the more aggressive drivers, always passing people that are holding me up at 75mph, but nothing annoys me more than people like you who don't at least put in some effort to let people merge. They have to merge SOMEHOW, and if you have to slow down slightly, then do it. It's not like they are being a dick and cutting you off, but rather they HAVE to get in before their lane stops. There is only so much space in between cars to get over, I will always try to gun it so you don't have to slow down but if you're not leaving over a car length in the first place for me to get over, and the person behind you is doing the same, then NO one can get over, backing up the entire merging lane.
Personally, the way I see it, if you're too much of a dick to let people merge in, you shouldn't be driving next a the lane that's merging. I have no problem gunning it up to 90 so you don't have to slow down, but sometimes there simply isn't a method where you won't have to slow down without completely fucking up traffic.
Just personal opinion.

I am not accelerating to stop them from entering nor am I slowing down. I am just going on cruise control (I drive on cruise control 90% of the time that it is practical), a little above speed limit. A constant factor on the highway, not some free radical that you have to figure out and try to predict. I never have problems merging in because you have to time it appropriately with the traffic, which is easy when people are going a more or less constant speed. It's the people who use the acceleration lane to actually try to pass people that are retarded, because you're not supposed to be going 75 or whatever in that lane. It is more or less expected that you are going slower than the traffic you are entering, up until the point where you actually merge, and then you usually give a burst of an additional 5-10 mph to fit in the natural space between 2 cars and join rhythm. The moment you said you were an aggressive driver it ruined your argument in my eyes. Merging into the highway is not the time to be aggressive (EDIT: there are of course exceptions to this rule, but that is what they are - exceptions).
This isn't just my opinion - I worked as a driver before so these are things you learn in training.

In California everyone tailgates on the freeway, mostly in the left lanes but often in the right lanes as well, so there's no way to get onto the freeway without asserting yourself and hoping someone slows down to let you in.

I'm fine with slowing down as long as that person was initially ahead of me. The purpose of the yield sign is for you to YIELD to people already on the road. Which means, if you come out onto the acceleration lane side-by-side with another car, it is not your goal to overtake them, but to merge in behind them. I find it hard to believe that people tailgate to the point of not having a car's length in between but still moving around speed limit. When traffic is moving below speed limit due to congestion, that is a different story. I was talking about the situations where there is plenty of space and people still try to prove they have the bigger penis by trying to pass you despite the yield sign.

Damn... That sounds terrible haha. And I thought NJ had it bad. I bet if you put a CA driver in NJ they would come out of it with a new mindset considering there is traffic everywhere and speeding is not an option a lot of the time. If you sent an NJ driver to CA he would probably crash due to road rage.

I wasn't referring to being aggressive while merging in. I was referring more so to traffic related situations when it's hard to merge in, when I'm merging in onto the freeway on my way home from work, while not one of these confounded acceleration lanes you speak of, it's an absolute BITCH to merge over in. If you were going 70 mph it only gives you 10 seconds to merge over, which seems like a lot, but it doesn't end with a sort of "forced merge" onto the freeway, but it's actually an exit lane. So you have to find a way to get over, while other people are trying to get into your lane at the same time. And since it's a double exit lanes, you have to get over TWICE in that stretch otherwise you end up exiting. It's a retarded setup. And since I get off work at 6:00 pm often, I'm dealing with rush hour traffic. People drive so close to each other you CAN'T merge UNLESS someone lets you over, which people do. I always give priority to the mergers in this situation and rage when people don't hit their own brakes to let me over.
That's my image of what you guys were discussing, but I realize that it's actually a different situation, and the part in bold you were also describing something differently.
I find it hard to believe that people tailgate to the point of not having a car's length in between but still moving around speed limit
California, have fun. If you're going less than 80 mph in the left lane (15mph over) expect to get passed by everyone else and most likely get honked at if you stay there at 10mph over. My friend, from LA, drives less than a car length behind, and it scares the shit out of me. Most people leave slightly over a car length I'd say, but it's still pretty damn close.
EDIT: Even the slow lanes drive over the speed limit, haha. Usually the slowest lanes are driving around 70mph.

In NJ the left lane is similar but on most highways people are pretty civil in the right lane, at least when there isn't much traffic. You are expected to go speed limit or more, but if you aren't then you just get passed and it's not hard to do so since the other lanes are going above speed limit. Most of the time xP

This thread makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one that gets irked by these things.
One thing that always makes me laugh is those drivers that will tailgate you hard and then make this emphatic move to pass you and you see their car jerk to the side and jerk back and it seems like you were completely in their way, only to have the car in the lane they merge into slow down as well and you speed right past.

In all fairness if you're holding up traffic in the left lane there is little to no reason why you shouldn't move over. If I'm ever tailgated, the first thing I do is check my speed. If I'm going like 70mph in the left lane, I will either immediately up my speed, feeling dumb, or signal to the right and let the person pass. I let people pass me all the time with myself doing the one moving over, no shame there, and I expect people to do the same for me if I'm somewhat tailgating them (I never get right on people's ass because I'm too scared they'll hit the brakes, just close enough to let them know "hey, I want to pass you!").
PS. Not trying to incite flames in this topic, just giving people a heads up on possibly a different perspective.
PSS. What's the absolute WORST is when you're in the carpool lane and going 5-10 mph slower than the "left" fast lane (the lane to the right of you).

This is why I love having a semi-fast car. I love gunning it in 2nd until I hit 60 mph and am way past all the cars . I get out of everyone's way quickly. To be honest, my biggest fear when driving is being around way too many people especially on entrances/exits to the high way. That is when driver's are at their worst.

That happens every single day here. People try to weave in and out of traffic to get ahead of everyone and end up getting back into the same exact spot they started it. Don't worry about the road rage. You're definitely not the only one. I'll be downright honest and say that I have lost my voice once from all the yelling I did at once guy. I'm sure me singing along to the metal I was playing had something to do with it too, but the screaming at the guy definitely made it worse.
Edit - More like screaming at my windshield since it was damn cold and my windows were down. Haha.

I agree with the fact that you should move over if people are tailgating you, regardless of whether you are going a decent speed or not (however if you are a bad driver than just do what you are more comfortable with, within reason). But I try to never tailgate people unless there is no option of passing them, in which case I am telling them to speed up a notch. I let people know that "hey I want to pass you!" by passing them lol. I don't feel good when people tailgate me, so I try not to do it to others.
~JoeMentum: Problem with that approach (if you were not initially ahead, of course) is what if the other dude decides to gun it too? Sometimes people do stupid shit in situations like that where both people accelerate. I heard people say that they see it as a challenge on the road and turn it into a game of chicken. I am like, "What the fuck? There are people this stupid?" And yes, yes there are.

Quoting this post because I feel it deserves more attention.
Also, I hate people that can't pick one speed. They're going 60 one minute and I pass them... then five minutes later they're doing 90 flying by me. Rinse and repeat for the next hour.

Hmm, I don't really dislike any type of drivers in particular, except for the cell phone holding makeup-doing soccer mom in an escalade tailgating me @ 75 mph. Luckily those are pretty rare, so the road is a happy experience for me.
I try to signal and never go 10 mph above the limit and everything ^_^
What I don't understand is superagressive driving. If I'm going somewhere on a freeway and there's moderate traffic, I just stay in one of the middle lanes until my exit. I see sooooooooo many people try to weave in lanes and tailgate other people at less than 5 feet and 10 miles later I see that same car side by side with me or maybe 50 feet ahead.

If people would just stay the hell out of the left lane, you'd never see them again.

I'm not asking for those people to go 90 or 40, a 5 mph difference should be sufficient for the duration of the stretch (in my experience). I find it hard to believe that people tailgate to the point of not having a car's length in between but still moving around speed limit California, have fun. Ah I see. That is a pain in the ass indeed, and different from what I had in mind lol. I don't know how I'd handle that, I don't think I've ever seen a single lane merge into a double lane exit in my life lol. In NJ the left lane is similar but on most highways people are pretty civil in the right lane, at least when there isn't much traffic. You are expected to go speed limit or more, but if you aren't then you just get passed and it's not hard to do so since the other lanes are going above speed limit. Most of the time xP Where Route 42 merges into 295...nightmare. 42 splits off into two different ramps that go over 295, then 295 splits off (by means of a 3 inch high concrete separator and a shoulder IN THE MIDDLE for about 4 miles before remerging with itself after it's become 76) and then 42 comes down on both sides. The on the left side, the 2 lanes from 295 merge and then the lane from 42 becomes the left lane. On the right hand side, the 2 lanes from 42 become 295, and there's about 700 feet of cross merging from people on 42 going to 76, and people staying on 295.

That can't be how they originally planned it, you know that shit was all dumped on a group of CEs and the government was like "Alright we need you to figure out how we can merge all this shit in as little room as possible, glhf."
I'll show some of my favorites from my area, route 18:
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i265/fanatacist-/180.png
1. This is the exit that college kids take to get back home or to NYC if they are going on US 1 or the TP, which 90% of them are. This is where everyone drives like chickens with their heads cut off because they can't figure out that the left lane is for going South and the right is for North. People have merged into each other so many times here, its fucking terrible. This is in part due to the preceding Circle of Doom, which has 3 entrances, a merge with another road, and no one understands the concept of yielding (except for the people in the circle, who yield to cars about to get into the circle, perpetuation the cycle of stupidity).
2. Acceleration lane that has the most assholes I have ever seen (probably because it's coming out of Cook college, fuckers).
3. Similar scenario as 1, people don't get that to bypass all of NB you go left, so the people in the right lanes who are just trying to figure out WTF is going on on this road have to merge over 3 lanes to not get fucked by college traffic. College bitches that drive their trust fund cars in the left lane realize that they need to get into the right lanes too late and merge right. So many times have I seen like 3 cars sitting in that white area, going in opposite directions, all stuck because of each other and the traffic of like-minded idiots.
4. Yet another divide that people can't seem to handle, this is for my exit to my house too (I live adjacent to college campus, woe is me).
5. There is a very misleading sign before this exit which makes people think they can U-turn in this development. Well, you can't. Results in mass people sitting there and jumping in at the worst time.
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i265/fanatacist-/181.png
A. So if you are coming down 1 S and want to make a U-turn, the makers of this disaster decided to put it together with route 18 N. Only problem is that they realized too late that when they'd be done, there'd be only 300 feet for you to 1. accelerate to 45, 2. merge into traffic 3. switch 3 lanes. GLHF! Worst shit in the world. I usually avoid this U-turn even though it is logistically the most convenient one.
B. I have seen people do the stupidest shit in this area, simply because they have so many damn options that they usually end up taking all the ones that make them in go in fucking circles in one of the busiest exit areas. The 3 roads here connect 1 N, 18 S, and the TP.
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i265/fanatacist-/182.png
C. This is the TP and route 18. I would begin to explain the problems but there are simply too many. One of my major gripes is that they decided to build shit in between all these exits so there are people popping in and out of exit roads and some of the roads go throug fucking business parking lots. WTF IS GOING ON HERE?
So basically, to get anywhere from my house or from any highway in my area (I have to take 1 to and from work, I have to take 18 to my parents' house, TP to the city, etc. etc.) its a solid 10 minutes of headache regardless of where you are going because all the options are equally shitty.
