I can really not recommend it, though i played only about 30 minutes. The class System is an inferior version of guild wars dualclassing, more like the different skill trees you can choose in many MMORPGs. The quests are booooooooooooooooooring. The graphic is poor, about as good as aion, and even that looks boring. I haven't found much of a story before giving up ("oh, there are those other guys, we don't like them and because of them the big evil is back and everything went bad"... uhm, yeah, heard that before, so whats special?). The Intro is _BAD_.
Hmm.... yeah, thats about it, don't know what good things i could talk about...
Maybe it gets better later, but the start was even worse than the vanilla WoW i played ages ago. I will definatly wait for GW2 and SW: The old Republic and in the meantime play SC2 and Magicka.
I got to level 11 using riftstalker/ranger/marksman, and it's alright. I wouldn't play it as I would play WoW but it's a nice distraction when you have nothing else to do. The only warfront I played was fun though, almost as fun as leveling through BGs in WoW. Especially with the amount of skills you get at such a low level, very entertaining.
I like the game. I've always been a pretty casual MMO player, I've never spent more than a month or two at the highest level in any game, the concept of farming raids has just never appealed to me nor has something like arena when I could go play an RTS or an FPS game which are just better competitive environments.
Quests can be pretty boring, but the rift system does a good job of breaking the monotony, often times I get side tracked by a rift or a huge invasion and I go off and do that. Some animations and sounds are pretty bland. Male models, as usual, tend to look like total shit since the dweeb artists are always far more interested in crafting the perfect butt dimples on the females than making men not look like mutants.
What I like about the class system is that you can switch roles so easily. I doubt being able to use 3 souls at once will create much more choice than the wow talent system, there will be the optimum spec for whatever role you want to fill so the choice will ultimately become illusory. What I like is that many classes can fill various roles. Your mage can play like a wow mage or warlock without leveling two different characters, it can heal, do some other random shit I am sure. Clerics being able to tank, heal or melee/spell dps is cool to me. Same with your rogue being support or an assassin/melee or ranged class. I see someone who can seamlessly play different roles becoming valuable assets later in the game. Imagine a wow encounter where rogues suck, but you can magically transform into a hunter instead of sucking through it.
I don't get why so many MMO players seem to think it's their decision to purchase a game that is the sole decider between success and failure for that game. Like it can't possibly succeed without their presence. As far as I know Aion did alright until people realized it's a horrible korean grind game.
As far as people being critical about generic MMO gameplay, that's entirely fair. But if you think SWTOR is going to have you doing anything but collecting 10 rancor asses I think you're in for a surprise. GW2 is a definite buy when it ever comes out, but even the GW PVE was a total chore.
I enjoy it enough to play it a couple hours a week. I don't look at MMOs like some giant commitment though. It's $40, not marriage. There's more content than Cataclysm and I don't know what's around the corner. I like that.
crap intro story, runs like shite on my laptop so hard to judge, but id probably easily decide that its not worth buying for me (and most others) and id be happy to instead go play "runes of magic" mmo if i wanted something that felt clean, modern and WoWish, whilst being free to play.
for hardcores (bums), go ahead and enjoy a new playable mmo while its still fresh and undiscovered! (and take me with you...back to the happy place )
This game is actually seriously good, been playing it the last few days. The class system is really deep and it's the most polished beta I've ever played.
Just to state.. I do truly like this game, I will most likely be buying it. but now onto my rant.
The rifting and class system is something i love. It is tons of fun seeing 15-30 people just randomly come together as a group in the world over and over to fighting as one to stop the rifts! It does bring that tiny something to the game that will keep people playing.
What this game is seriously lacking: From what I have seen and for the love of god i hope they just havent placed it in the game yet but will after beta is gone but is anyone seriously wondering where the pvp system is?
In tons of videos made by the company a lot of what they talked about was the dynamic open world pvp and how much fun and skill it will take along with warfronts and RvR. But yet again this is taking notes from warhammer and child proofing the pvp system to let care bears grind away. I understand that you can not have a fully lootable system because in that case everyone would just gank gank gank. I do not want a system like that either because once i get a sword that i really like I would rather not lose it! BUT! what this game needs is a semi-lootable system (let me explain)
The main thrill to pvp and the reward and the problems of dying. Right now dying means what??? Paying the 2 gold to get your soul back to 100 percent. lol.. All that means is you just run back and grind away again. What needs to be put in place on the PVP servers because their PVP servers and not PVE for a reason is a system where items like potions, ingredients and minor objects like that are fully lootable from peoples bodies.. WHY? because at least you will be gathering a reward for show casing skill on beating someone. Plus it involves a risk of other people just playing plain stupid.
Why should someone be allowed to carry around 100 greater heal pots and 100 other things, shouldn't the PvP aspect of the game make you double think what you bring. I find myself not caring if i die, its chump change really..
I love this game and i really hope they added in a risk factor into pvping, rather than the current die/rez up grind again until you have that max lvl armor.
Maybe I am just playing the wrong type of MMO's and the future of "PvP" server means PvE with a dash of having to run back to your grinding area if by some random means you die to another person..
My little brother pre-ordered and downloaded the beta. The presentation is very Warhammer, very Aion, which we're not big fans of. But the animations, pleasingly, are very very good, something WoW truly excels at. He says he loves the Rift system and the talent trees.

It depends on what kind of key you have. If you pre-ordered or have a VIP you will get into all of them, if not, you may not be in all of them.

Kill/collect quests just aren't acceptable nowadays with the standard that Blizzard have put forward in World of Warcraft. I mean, I hate the endgame of WoW, but the leveling is just fantastic now, great fun, and it's way more than 'kill and collect', doesn't take itself too seriously either, with pop culture references and shit.
I would wager a very large sum of money that over 50% of the quests in WoW involve killing and collecting an item from a mob.
Yes, but the NEW quests most certainly don't. They incorperate a lot of other things, as well as phasing to spice things up. The variety in 60-70, 70-80 and 80-85 blew my mind each time, as it was an improvement each time. Now anything LESS than what I've come to see as the norm at 80-85 seems mediocre to me.
Yeah new things like escort quests and "use item x on y". There's like 10 "different" quests and the rest is pretty much the same old even though they disguise them slightly with phasing. Rift got those 10 "different" quests in the form of zone-wide rift quests. Quests can only be done in so many ways and it's similar in every single MMO so don't ever expect it to be new and revolutionary :p I agree though that the quests are boring, I just don't agree that they're a lot more boring than WoW quests. WoW quests are a pile of shit, Rift quests are two piles of shit, both shit in their own way.
It's about how you present your pile of shit, and Cataclysm has an insanely fun way of doing so.
-“Warfronts!” event four: 1/7-1/10 -“Battle of the Ascends” event five: 1/25-1/27 -“Planar War” event six: 2/4-2/7 -“Telara the Merciless” event seven: 2/15-2/22
That's what Direct2Drive says on their page
Concerning world pvp I read something on the alpha (basically the beta but 24/7) about some things they were adding in soon. You can control regions by putting down one of those stone things and building them up, you can also destroy the other factions, or take their territory. And also there was something about controlling an area and getting a shot at some raid boss type thing, sounded a bit like wintergrasp but it took place in a regular zone if I recall and reset every 20 hours. I had it all copied and was gonna paste it here but it got removed since alpha is still under NDA.
Also last night there was some crazy epic zone wide invasion thing. It wasn't the typical one where you fight off 40 invasions and close 15 rifts and a boss spawns, it was just an absurd number of invasions and we had to collect 200 shard things and bring them back to generators while the invasion forces tried to destroy them. The whole zone was helping out, defending and finding shards or killing bosses that had them.
When we got the 200 we had to fight some massive giant guy and got one of those epic source shards as reward. There must have been like 500 people on screen it was ridiculous. The scale of the event was just so massive, I was really impressed. I love that you can just log into something like that.
The server events do add alot to your leveling experience, if Rift has anything its Rifts themselves that make the game really unique and enjoyable. The pvp is really good in my experience with it so far. Its hard to tell exactly how good class balance and customization will be without actually being able to get max level though. And lol at the people saying the class system is a ripoff of guild wars, that is truly hilarious.
