Kill/collect quests just aren't acceptable nowadays with the standard that Blizzard have put forward in World of Warcraft. I mean, I hate the endgame of WoW, but the leveling is just fantastic now, great fun, and it's way more than 'kill and collect', doesn't take itself too seriously either, with pop culture references and shit. I would wager a very large sum of money that over 50% of the quests in WoW involve killing and collecting an item from a mob.

is it just me, or is that a serious problem in this game?

Yes, but the NEW quests most certainly don't. They incorperate a lot of other things, as well as phasing to spice things up. The variety in 60-70, 70-80 and 80-85 blew my mind each time, as it was an improvement each time. Now anything LESS than what I've come to see as the norm at 80-85 seems mediocre to me. The fact that the entirety of the starting area was just 'kill thing and get item' while running around in a huge area with relatively boring combat... that just put me off straight away. Even World of Warcraft has better combat than that, as it isn't so slow. Also, I hate the artistic direction of Rift, it's just dull IMO, and I would prefer World of Warcraft's nicely stylized art against it any day.

Yeah new things like escort quests and "use item x on y". There's like 10 "different" quests and the rest is pretty much the same old even though they disguise them slightly with phasing. Rift got those 10 "different" quests in the form of zone-wide rift quests. Quests can only be done in so many ways and it's similar in every single MMO so don't ever expect it to be new and revolutionary :p I agree though that the quests are boring, I just don't agree that they're a lot more boring than WoW quests. WoW quests are a pile of shit, Rift quests are two piles of shit, both shit in their own way.

I had such a blast with the rift system/invasions. We ended up roaming around, ~20 of us, going from rift to invasion, such a refreshing feeling seeing the server band together. The quests on the other hand are pretty lame, kill X, activate Y etc. I'm currently level 11, maybe they become more engaging later on. Overall though, it's shaping up nicely.

I don't like the "class" system at all. Way too many combinations, most of them useless, and so far it looks like there are a ton of overlapping skills which do the same thing. All the quests are boring. kill this, collect that, plus a couple of "activate this object" quests. 80 to 90% in WoW are like that, and it sucked even in WoW. But at least WoW has a very worked-out backstory behind every quest and the whole world plays in a well established and detailed fictional universe. Plus, most, if not all, quests in WoW give at least some variation on the kill/collect/activate thing, for example with lots of lots of scripted events, zone phasing etc. And Rift doesn't do that so far, and I doubt it will at higher levels. And even if it does, I'm not going to play until I reach level 20 just to get to play some better quests. There are a lot of retarded-looking animations, and in general there's either not a lot or just bad visual and audible feedback when you're doing something (eg. hitting an enemy). The UI seems badly designed. It's not exactly cluttered, but for some reason it seems to me that the interface doesn't separate itself enough from the game world enough. For this reason, for example, (at least in my opinion) there's nothing that clearly visually shows you what's going on in your UI, for example, when you have talent points left (Because you forgot to spend them or whatever). There's also a couple of essential features completely lacking (at least I didn't find them in the UI settings), for example, scrolling between action bars with shift + mousewheel etc. Haven't even entered dungeons or instances yet, let alone raids. But given the standard that WoW set in that area, I doubt that it will be better or come even close to WoWs quality. All in all, I see absolutely no reason to play this game whatsoever, except if you're some nerd who's been playing WoW for 5 years non stop and need a change of graphics for once. The graphics really do look very nice, but they're not phenomenal.

By the way, to all those crying that quest are all the same, show me a MMORPG where majority of the quest aren't kill x mobs, bring y stuff. Yes, It's true that cataclysm changed that, but it took them long time and if you find a non grindy quest, its either cutscene like, where all you do is stand and watch conversation of two NPC or a really fun quest, like saving bears in Mt. Hyjal (but those are rare).

Even for players who played WoW a ton, is there a point in playing this game instead of WoW, if they still like WoW? There isn't. Unless graphics is the most important thing in an MMO for you.
