The problem is that the market does not cater to the "experienced mmo gamer" anymore. It caters to the larger player base. From a business stand point, why would you make a game that appeals to 3% of the ( for examples sake ) WoW population, when you can make a game that appeals to 97% of it. You're more likely to get more profit from the later.
A lot of companies aren't really willing to break the mold right now, given that there's been such a stranglehold on the market by the new Wrath of the Lich King style of developing MMO's. Going too far out side of the box will almost certainly ensure that the company does see a profit on the game.
I'm personally a fan of older MMO's, but since they aren't really in the works right now, you work with what is available. Each new MMO will begin taking baby steps away from the current model, and in however long it takes, we will have the next fotm MMO.
I think if you're looking for someone to come out with the next EverQuest, you're going to be severely disappointed and waiting a long time.

It was the first theme park MMO of a style now very popular. There is little connection between the genuine first successful MMO, Ultima Online or even Asherons Call or the original Everquest. WoW introduced to the genre alot of new things aimed at casual gamers.
Ever tried a corpse run in EQ? Or gotten dry looted in Ultima Online? WoW created a much softer, newb friendly style of MMO. Based more around questing, scripted raiding end game, and a lack of serious penalties for failure.
We call MMOs which attempt to emulate WoWs success by sticking to these elements 'WoW clones'.

I'm not getting the similarities that WoW and Rift have. I played WoW for 3years and although I do see some common similarities like the UI for example but those are common things that are in almost any successful mmo. Maybe I havent looked into it enough to find how it's so similar that people are willing to call it a "clone"

Where did you get the idea that more experienced mmo gamers look for diversity? Seems like a pretty asinine assumption that had no credible basis to it. Why do people still play EQ? UO? Were they looking for diversity? No. They play it because of it's solid mechanics, not because it's something game breaking that revolutionizes what an mmo is supposed to be.
So to say people won't play Rift because it's not diverse is pretty much the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Have you played it yet? The similarities are quite abundant. Combat mechanics, UI is a spot on copy for the most part. Questing style is the similar, not that I think that it will ever change after the WoW quest system was implemented.

Maybe I havent looked into it enough to find how it's so similar that people are willing to call it a "clone" Warfronts are basically disguised copies of battlegrounds, honor/valor points rewarded from PvP/PvE just like WoW, crafting is pretty much identical, just click create all and wait without any real depth, instances are 5 and 20man, with both normal and heroic modes. That's a lot of similarities.
That said, it doesn't really feel like a WoW clone while playing it, it feels sort of like EQ2 with WoW features and some new unique stuff, it feels like a new game.

I was just looking at Assassin and got a glimpse of how combat would be and did see a huge similarity with the Rogue in WoW which was my main.
Yeah, I haven't played it but from reading about it It doesnt really seem like a WoW Clone that is. With the Rifts and having such a complex class system.
Well its about time to play isnt it? 5 til 1?

Have anybody actually managed to log on yet?
|
Cant seem to get in whatsoever..
|
Neither can I... There's probably a ton of people trying to get on.. but we'll see.
|
worst part is that I was on around 09:40 PST, saw the servers weren't up yet so I just changed my resolution then quit the game.
|
If nobody is getting in, I guess the servers are simply not up yet.
|
I agree that the servers probably aren't up yet, I'm sure they'll get around to that soon enough.
|
No, the servers are up. People on the official forums have managed to get online, but servers keep crashing.
