The beta key doesn't immediately give you beta access, it just puts you on a 'beta-list' so when they send out invites to the beta events they send to those people, you'll get mail that you've been invited before every single event.
Not sure how often they send out those though to people recently added to that list :p

Are the RIFT Beta VIP and Beta keys any different? I have the Beta VIP... :\ this is so very confusing. So I wait until beta actually starts and then I have a chance to get in to play it? Bleh :\

VIP keys are guaranteed access, but it doesn't give you access before they send you a mail like this:

Follow these instructions to join this beta event:
Sign into your Trion Worlds account.
Click the "Download Client" link from your account page.
Run the installer and follow the directions.
Run the Patcher: Navigate to where you installed RIFT in the START menu and click the PLAY RIFT shortcut. Enter the Email Address and Password used for your Trion Worlds account and log in
You should get it before the 25th at least in any case.
(In the rare case that you don't, just contact customer support and they'll add it manually, they're actually pretty fast.)
Out of curiosity, been kinda glancing at this. How is the PvE content? More specifically, is it anything like cataclysm heroics/raids in low gear levels difficulty, and is it just mindless tank/spank/switch target like that boss above seemed to be, or are there any other mechanics to watch out for?
There's definately better PvE than most MMO's, I don't really know how it compares with WoW's difficulty at this point but there is real strategies involved.
Most 5mans doesn't have that much stuff to really watch out for, but most of the bosses have some gimmick/trick that you need to do in order to kill it, even the first level 17 instance and that was pretty unexpected the first time I did it.
Feels like a mix between AoC, WoW and Aion PvE :p

I just recently got a beta key and I am starting to get excited to see how this mmo goes. I've been watching the Yogcast videos and the beta seems pretty fun so far.

The client is 18 mb, but you need to double click the file to unpack it, once its installed you have to patch the game which was a 7.8 gig download for me  . So find the file you downloaded, double click and away you go :D. Also if you get any 1003 errors, just cancel and repatch, you will have to check the files again which is annoying, but after that it will resume where the patcher stopped.

yup, im not excited about this at all, aside from it being a new mmo to try (i love trying new mmos but rarely play them for long for whatever reason)

Rift VIP beta key - can be used 25 times, i used once so now 24. Go nuts. Just dont use it if you aren't gonna play the game for more than like 30 minutes.

Well it's not going on yet, so either hope that you'll still get an invite, or you can try and getting in touch with Customer Service so they can confirm you have the key, then they will send an invite.
I had to do that when I put my code in a few hours after last beta had actually started and they sent me the invite. But since it is still a couple days away, they might still update your account with an invite.

Basically what happens is they are having "beta events", which are basically opportunities to try the game, each time they release a little bit more of the game's actual content. Last beta they added PvP battlegrounds, I havent seen what they are adding this time but I got an invite again so I suppose i will find out.
Basically you play the game up to a certain level and you can try abilities etc, but there is a cap (which isnt the full game's cap) and at the end of each beta event your stats dont save and your lvled up hero is eliminated from the server.
IF you have a VIP key, that means that you will be able to partake in every beta event without an invite from the company. Each event lasts about four days, generally from Tuesday - Friday. The next one starts on Tuesday, anyone else get an invite to the game today? I guess they are sending out invites now...

wrong, all the characters have saved from each beta.

I am in the beta again, but I am not sure if I have time to play this time.... 
However, last time, I was playing entirely by myself (lame-o).... after spamming the same sequence of spells for 2 hours it got kind of boring.

Safe zones? safe levels?
PvP / PvE servers? Server jumping?
PK penalties, limitations, rewards? death penalties?

Very Similar to WoW pvp. You can engage and attack flagged players. There are pvp servers, in which you are auto flagged in certain zones. There are no penalties, for pking or dying to a pk.
