Yes, JD has lost in this situations before, but normally its a result of his carelessness and stubbornness and not necessarily BO strategic difference. + Show Spoiler + And everyone seems happy to follow suit. OTOH, it would be awesome to see JD (try and lead the way and) in this new era of late-game-tech-switch-heavy-to-ultralisk-finisher ZvZ. Just imagine all the action! xD
yeah but ZvZ was stuck in it's current stage even before Jaedong started dominating the match-up.
also for Jaedong in hive tech ZvZ watch Jaedong vs Yellow from last year's proleague ^^

yes. BUT. great, calm, and even effort has at one point experimented with post-mutaling vZ. i guess what im saying is that due to the very nature of ZvZ game, the variables are few and the optimal path is to always go mutaling. and JvZ (its not his, but his the best at it xD) is the perfect way to do it. Hence, any and all strategy involving post mutaling to be viable should consistently cross this barrier first, not out of luck or error on the JvZ part, but due to an inherent strength. Otherwise, why go late game ultra (and all necessary in between switches) if there is a precise way to end it early. but trust me, i'll be the one cheering louder than you on the day ZvZ standard is like great's.
and JD vs Yellow is Muta-Devourer-Plague late game, not hydra lurker ultra. xD
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

Awesome write-up. Glad to hear about BW more again since the shine of SC2 is starting to wear out for me.

Love it, as always (well almost always.) The ZvZ section was well done, and lined up with my thoughts of the matchup. Until the end, that is, when you said it could turn into ZvZ. I immediately thought “well, defilers ruin that comparison; just imagine what TvT would be like with swarms everywhere.” But the more I think about it, defilers do make ZvZ look like TvT, because they cause the game to grow into a positional battle, and allow offensive units (cracklings/ultras) to hold key defensive positions. I would have to say the biggest difference between the two is base security. When two dropships land four tanks, it is not a big deal. There are a lot of buildings, and the tanks will require time to do serious damage. There is little urgency to repel it, and it only takes a few tanks siege up. But two overlords with 16 cracklings have more health, cost less (both the transports and the contents), have a much higher DPS and are attacking a smaller base with weaker buildings. In less than a minute, those 400 minerals worth of units can send their opponent back to the Stone Age tech-wise. It will be interesting to see how zergs are able to defend themselves from doom drops. The only solutions I can think of are to either A)have a large standing air force to prevent the drops out right, or B) to have sizeable lurker forces permanently at every expansion. Both seem very expensive.
And in reference to the idea that queens and defilers will make ultralisks useless: I disagree. The ultralisks will naturally spread out enough for plague to not be THAT large of a factor. And the Queens could become a huge problem, but I think zergs can just treat them the same as science vessels. Just have some scourge on hand to pick them off before they can use their ability. That will either force the abandonment of queens, or using hydras (or mutas I guess) to support the queens.
That Zero vs Soulkey series is exciting

The fact the expensive Ultralisk is completely killed by one spell by the Queen ala EMP against archons makes me think it's actually not really good at all. Plus broodling can be important in breaking down the impossible to kill lurkers under swarm. So prehaps really the Queen is the real lategame changer? Queen/hydra/ling on the offensive and lurker/swarm on the defensive (as well as a healthy sprinkling of sunk/spore). Important not to get your queen cloud ensnared and caught out/killed and keep them split up however.
