Just saw this thread so I'll bump it with some helpful advice. If you can shell out a little doe I recommend buying guitar pro its a really useful program that reads a whole wack of tab files that you can play along with. Really helps me alot when I'm learning new fingerstyle songs. Theres tons of tabs that you can find through google as well. That's my advice. Bumping this thread for more guitar advice. If you don't want to buy guitar pro, you can also use Tabledit which is a free program that reads .tef tabs. You can find a whole bunch of tef tabs, at allmusic.com . That's usually where I go for classical and fingerstyle stuff though, if your interested in that, and if your not I recommend learning some fingerstyle as it can be very challenging and will improve your dexterity and playing immensely.

really the only advice I can give is to simply play scales, (with all four fingers, this is important). Make sure to have variety (major, minor, diminished etc. patterns). Use those as simple warmup excersizes, and constantly get faster and faster at it. Then once you become good at these patterns, look up solos and whatnot and you will realize, "Ah, D major arpegios (sweeps) into diminished patterns with chromatic runs then resolving with D major sweeps again". You just broke down the entire solo right there and best of all you know the finger patterns for them.

Make sure you only play with alternate picking from the get-go. I taught myself through pure music passion and mad practice but I am still shaking bad habits. Shit i used to down pick only for the first year of playing it was terrible..

go to guitar-scales.com and choose your tuning and learn some scales. Open up your practice regimen with 1234 on the low end of the guitar on each string slowly and deliberately whilst alternate picking to warm your hands up. Then do 1 2 3 4 but this time go from the low E to the G string and back up 5 6 7 8 from the G string to the low E. Do this all up and down the fretboard and use a sweeping technique (where you slide the pick down the strings instead of individual notes). This gets you used to moving every which way on the guitar and builds your dexterity.

You will suck and you will get frustrated for the first year or so but if you can't be good at something if you don't struggle with it. I recommend learning all your shit on acoustic first (even metal techniques) because if you can play it on an acoustic you can sure as hell play it on electric.. Work on deliberately slow form before anything because you will build bad habits like i did if you don't.
