Beggars cant be chooser. :O
The site that I recommended use their own server for all of those mp3, so the download is pretty fast.
but if you still insist, you can try this website:
I have an FTP where I have a small collection of video game music but it uses encryption and all that jazz so it might be even more troublesome than torrents for you.
There's this kingdom hearts site that has one of the most comprehensive video game music libraries I've ever stumbled upon, why exactly a kingdom hearts site would have so much videogame music is unknown to me but they do and it's awesome. The thing that sucks though is that you can't get a whole album unless you donate or if you register and get people to click referall links(I think that's still the case, not sure haven't been there for a while). You basically have to click and download each .mp3 manually from the site, which can be sort of tedious if say the game that you want all the music on, contains around 20+ songs or so. Anyways a great source of VG music if you can look past that.
Also if you're into videogame remakes there's this japanese band called Saitama Saishuu Heiki (think I spelled that correctly), abbreviated S.S.H that make some awesome metaly/rock -ish covers which is quite awesome. Here are some examples:
Dr.Wily Stage (Mega Man 2)
Bloody Tears (Castlevania)
Super Mario Main Theme
If you want more of this I have some stuff I can upload for you, also you can get some of (not all of) their stuff on their own website for free. http://www.ssh.ne.jp/
Something you should know about is that most of the game music on the web is in mp3 format. However, that's not how the music is stored in the actual game. Instead of storing pre-recorded audio files to play back, games store the instructions for how to make the music. Thus, these source files are both higher fidelity (closer to the original--it is the original) and a lot smaller in size than the converted mp3s.
For popular consoles like NES, GEN, SNES, PS1-2, etc. people have found ways to rip the source from the actual game, and have compiled soundtracks this way. There's special players for these files that have been written, but more conveniently perhaps, there are also WinAmp plugins that will allow you to play these files.
quite helpful posts here. S.S.H. sounds interesting. ill also look into these special files/players. thanks alot guys !!!
EDIT:
@Myrmidon
i searched around on the site you linked me to and downloaded a .gbs file (gameboy music file) and the winamp plugin "meridian": http://www.zophar.net/utilities/gbs.html but its just a .dll i put the .dll into the winamp directory, but the .gbs file wont work.

how to get it working?^^
Well, I didn't have any gbs (all I have are the SNES and PS1-2 plugins), so I did what you did and downloaded the plugin. The .dll is in_gbs.dll, and I put it in ~/Winamp/Plugins along with all the other in_XXX.dll files. Did you just put it in ~/Winamp? That would be the problem.
edit: also, just in case, I think it needs to be Winamp version 2.x or 5.x (not 3.x).

Taste is subjective.:D Just sayin that that kingdom hearts site with all that stuff covers anything from 8-bit to the latest consoles of today, so for those who, might have liked the FF X music could've gotten it there as well and correct me if I'm wrong but they're not really 8bit.
My bad though, should've read the OP abit more thouroughly. Seeing as he wanted to get nostalgic with some old VG music I should've assumed what he was looking was more or less towards the NES/SNES etc. era of videogame music.:D

on ocremix there's remix collections for quite a few games here just click which one you want, and there'll be a link to it's homepage on the right. all of them are available through torrents, but most you can dl individually from the sites as well. examples: FF4 collection Chrono Trigger collection Sonic 2 collection etc.
Alexander Brandon, Michiel van den Bos, Andrew Sega, and Dan Gardopée at their best. I love mechanism8 / foregone destruction / botpack #9 / Skyward Fire / Phantom / Run
I'm a huge Baldur's Gate II fan. The first time I fought Sendai in the expansion, ToB, I was so immersed I didn't even notice this music start playing - that's how natural and appropriate it is. When I did explicitly take notice half way through the battle I thought: "this is awesome" and it's been with me ever since. A truly epic track:
I also like the Final Fantasy series, with FFVI being my favorite. The first time I heard Terra's theme I loved it and for me nothing beats the original 16-bit version that you got from the SNES. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find it on YouTube so here's a piano version that is nearly as nice:
Finally, I present the intro music to two games I played the hell out of as a kid: Streets of Rage and Lotus Turbo Challenge. I still have my Genesis and boxed games in excellent condition, although I think I could only ever bring myself to sell it if I was facing material destitution. I remember just putting in the cartridge and letting them run, so I could enjoy the music. I prefer Streets of Rage but they both invoke a lot of nostalgia:
