I'll constantly be adding to this section as I watch more animes. For now It will just be one big pile but eventually I might work up enough anti-lazy to organize them by episode length or something.
-Boogiepop Phantom -Hayate no Gotoku! -Serial Experiments Lain -School Rumble -Cowboy Bebop -Samurai Champloo -Haruhi -Lucky Star -Code Geass -Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann -Miname-ke -Nausicaä -Spirited Away -FLCL -Golden Boy -Full Metal Panic? Fomoffu! (Season 1.5) -Ghost in the Shell (All of them) -Death Note -Akira -Ergo Proxy -The Place Promised in Our Early Days -Paprika -Tekkon Kinkreet -5 Centimeters Per Second -Kannagi
For some reason I postponed watching this classic forever, no particular reason why but I finally got around to it. As there is very little which I find unlikeable, I will mainly focus on the positive, and as a result, the review will end up being pretty short.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - 26 Episodes
Story is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth where the organization Nerv is fighting Angels, which is basically giant biological things that appear out of no where. Basically its a mecha/psychological anime with generous amounts of religious allusions.
This anime is good. The mech action isn't overly repetitive, the storyline is amazing, the sound is is suiting and well orchestrated. The various themes and emotional / psychological analysis is engaging and interesting. The characters aren't plain and have character (Shinji is generic which I normally despise but he is very tolerable in this setting). If I had to pick out any negatives it would be the ending of the series, which I found disturbingly inconclusive, however watching "The End of Evangelion" provides an acceptable ending for me. Kaworu was a bit too gay for me though.
[9/10] I don't give out tens unless the anime is perfect, however this anime does come pretty damn close. You can tell its fucking good if you want to watch I want to watch it a second time, a man who never watches an anime twice. However, you should watch it at least twice as with these types of animes you often will find more meaning the second time through. This is a well liked anime classic for a reason. Go watch it if you haven't already. Download the OST too, it's great as well.
If you're going to watch it, save yourself some time by getting the series with the directors cut episodes, and skipping Death and Rebirth, which is basically a series recap.
Going to watch the first 5 movies of Kara no Kyoukai next as requested by some guy whose name eludes me at the moment. (This time I mean I'm really going to watch it next!)
Probably my favourite anime. Recently watched the first part of the remake "Rebuild of Evangelion". But it won't be completed for years so I don't recommend it.
It took years but I finally got my friend to watch it. Afterwards he said something along the lines of "wow you really should have tied me down and forced me to watch this years ago."
Eva eh, such polarized reviews even among the Japanese.
Don't do Rakkyo please, at least not until all of the episodes are released, you won't be doing the title justice. On that note though, I'd love to see them release a chapter 8 based on the contents released during last summer Comiket, unfortunately since that is released via the doujin group the chance is small to none.
This is by far my favourite anime, when I saw your original list of recommendations I was about to say that I can't take anyone who wouldn't recommend it (NGE) seriously, but fortunately you have seen the light!
Anyone interested in NGE should start watching the remake called "Rebuild of Evangelion" (link with info below).

Eh, Eva is one of those animes that gets particularly polarized responses, some people found it deep and thought provoking, others found those elements to be completely mindless and made purposely confusing so pseudo-intellectuals can point to it and look smart. With that in mind, it is probably a lot harder to take someone who recommend Eva without considering that issue first seriously.
EDIT - OP, when you mentioned Ikari as a generic I assume you mean Gendo? Not that Shinji isn't a sort of generic now :p

G-Gundam is fucking hilarious, I remember watching the English dubs as a small child. I have all the Gundams sitting on my hard drive ready to watch so if you can wait for awhile, within a year I will rewatch it and properly review it.

Yeah I meant Shinji, should have been more specific. I bet it wasn't THAT common back in the day but by now its like meh.

ugh just watching that clip makes me want to watch it again T_T. Also by hilarious to you mean bad?
I like animes that are deep and well written, but are a little less... abstract than say NGE. I don't want to finish watching it and then think what the hell just happened? I don't like mech animes, and I don't want to get into anything longer than a few seasons. Some of my favorites:
Hikaru no Go Xam'd RahXephon Ergo Proxy Ghost in the Shell stand alone complex.
Do you think I would enjoy most of those in your list?
