Full Metal Panic? Fomoffu
That's a winning recommendation in my book. Only FMP that's any good.

eva was my gateway drug to other anime and it was fuckin good; took me a couple watches through the series and movies, and a ton of reading/discussion on an eva forum to get a lot out of eva.

Also on Noein: I tried that one and thought I would love it because I find quantum mechanics so interesting but the animation seemed awful poor (very few frames, even for anime) and the art style seemed a bit off. Then the story and characters didn't please me either but I gave up rather early in the series so maybe I'll try to get farther in it sometime.

With that in mind, it is probably a lot harder to take someone who recommend Eva without considering that issue first seriously. EDIT - OP, when you mentioned Ikari as a generic I assume you mean Gendo? Not that Shinji isn't a sort of generic now :p
This. I really liked evangelion till the last 4-6 episodes. Then i found it completely stupid.

I went back and rewatched the whole series for the third time over the last couple of weeks, and I'll have to agree with most of the people here in saying that it is definitely my favorite anime series of all time. The characters are so deep and interesting and there are all these references to religion, psychology, etc. I think I've read everything there is to be found on wikipedia about the series.
Too bad they ran out of money at the end, otherwise they might have ended it quite differently; good thing they started doing movies as well, and End of Evangelion shows another possible way of how the story could have come to a conclusion.
I've not yet gotten around to watching the Rebirth of Evangelion, but I read that they've also added some new scenes that weren't in the original series, so that's something I definitely want to see.
On a completely random note, Asuka's German in the Japanese version is so horrible, it's almost unintelligible; it sounds so funny when she talks; basically like a person with no knowledge of the language reading out a phonetic transcription (most likely what they've done) XD

Glad you loved eva! If you've truly into the series, this wiki stores an IMMENSE amount of info, analysis, interpretations, etc etc. http://evapedia.evageeks.org/Main_Page There's also a forum there, with tons of discussion, both casual and serious/in-depth. I'll have to say, reading through a lot in that site gave me such a better understanding (if it's possible to understand eva hahaha) of the series.
Too bad they ran out of money at the end, otherwise they might have ended it quite differently; good thing they started doing movies as well, and End of Evangelion shows another possible way of how the story could have come to a conclusion. I'm pretty sure their budget was fine. The reason the ending was so strange was because eva was supposed to be a children's show, broadcasted around prime time and intended for kids to watch. [Some spoilers! If anyone reading this hasn't seen eva yet and intend to, don't read!!] + Show Spoiler +Obviously, throughout the second half of the series, things started getting more... fucked up. Parents, and the channel broadcasting eva, didn't think it was appropriate for kids to see strangling, excessive violence, blood spewing everywhere, disturbing images, naked 14-year-old girls literally falling apart, and a decapitation of a boy. The makers of eva had given the broadcasters the outlines of the intended episodes 25 and 26 (which was pretty much end of eva), and they rejected them; they said the writers had crossed the line, and that the ending was too much to be shown to kids. They had to change it, and so they did.
Although I must say, episode 25 and 26 were beautiful in their own way. The first watch wasn't too enjoyable, I was mostly saying 'wtf?' to myself the entire time, and the ending wasn't satisfying. But after watching EoE and understanding 25 and 26 better in how they relate to EoE, I can appreciate their goodness.
I've not yet gotten around to watching the Rebirth of Evangelion, but I read that they've also added some new scenes that weren't in the original series, so that's something I definitely want to see. You mean Rebuild? You should watch it

yeah, ieatkids5 , I meant rebuild; it's hard to keep up with the different names of the movies :p And thanks for link to the evapedia page, looks like I'll have some more reading to do :D
edit: I meant unintelligible ofc

Evangalion was amazing but a really good anime for people who liked this and death note is the anime code geass. It combines mecha with strategy and its like awesome. Btw, the main character of that anime can take out jaedong in random v j
