See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery#Guidelines_for_prolonging_Li-ion_battery_life Some laptop's power management software lets you specify how much charging takes place. I set my power manager to stop charging at 80% by default, and only increase to 100% when I know I will need the extra capacity. Also, you can get cheap batteries on eBay. I bought a 9cell (for my ThinkPad) for $65 shipped.

Because if that's what you're doing, it fucks the battery over time. Overcharge and all that nonsense. I often have my laptop on for several hours, so even if it's charged I leave the AC adapter in so it won't die :-/ I guess I could pop out the battery whenever I don't need it?

First, a no name company "vpr matrix" http://www.vprmatrix.com/ that sold through best but b/c the laptop looked cool - after two years, the backlight broke, the unit powering the backlight broke (700$ fix lol), the harddrive died when i turned it into a music streaming server, the network card died as well. It was a pretty shitty computer. Second, dell - two things died - the battery after about 2.5 years, got a replacement from dell for 150$ since i had a inspiron - the ac adaptor broke after about 3 years - got a imitation adaptor for like 35$ - its still running, although the fan is loud as all hell b/c it overheats. Now i have a benq i bought used for pretty much free, so far its been ok. Im expecting to have to buy a new computer in like 1-1.5 years.
